19 – I Read the Final Lines of Sarah’s Letter Again and Understood That Some of Our Most Important Words Had Never Been Spoken

I had always thought a letter could settle an argument.

Someone writes down what they mean.

The other person reads it.

And the confusion ends.

Sarah's letter didn't work that way.

It answered the biggest question of our divorce.

Then it left me with more questions than I had before.

I sat with the page unfolded across my knees.

I had taken it out of the envelope again.

I knew I was handling it too much.

But there was something about seeing her handwriting that made Sarah feel closer.

Not close enough.

Nothing could replace hearing her speak.

Still, it was something.

I looked at the first line.

David.

She had written my name the way she always did.

It looked familiar.

Almost ordinary.

Then came the truth I had been missing for three years.

Sarah had never stopped loving me.

I read those words.

I stopped.

Then I went back to the beginning and read them again.

I wasn't trying to memorize them.

I already had.

I was trying to understand how they could have been true while everything else was happening.

The divorce.

The separation.

The years without contact that left me wondering what I had done wrong.

The night we spent together.

The ring on my pillow.

There had been love beneath all of it.

I hadn't known.

I had lived as though love was the one thing missing.

Now I understood it had been there the whole time.

Hidden.

Misunderstood.

Unable to change what Sarah had decided.

I touched the edge of the page.

There was something painful about receiving the words too late to hear them when I needed them most.

Three years earlier, I had asked Sarah why she wanted to end our marriage.

I didn't ask because I wanted to win an argument.

I asked because I loved her.

I believed we had built something worth fighting for.

I wanted to understand what was wrong.

But Sarah couldn't give me the real explanation without revealing her illness.

And she had already decided that I shouldn't know.

So she spoke around the truth.

She told me what she believed I deserved.

She told me I should have a future that wasn't centered on caring for her.

She told me we couldn't continue.

I heard those words as rejection.

She meant them as protection.

Neither of us said what needed to be said.

I looked down at the letter.

Sarah had finally explained her meaning.

But she had done it on paper.

Then hidden the paper away.

I couldn't understand why she thought that was enough.

Maybe she didn't.

The final sentence suggested she knew there was still more to say.

I looked at that sentence again.

She wanted me to understand things she hadn't managed to explain in person.

I wondered what those things were.

I thought about the ring.

Was that one of them?

Perhaps.

But I had no evidence.

I wouldn't pretend otherwise.

I thought about the treatment.

There were years of her life I knew almost nothing about.

Perhaps those were the things she wanted to explain.

Or perhaps she wanted to tell me more about how frightened she had been when she asked for the divorce.

I didn't know.

The uncertainty was painful.

But it was honest.

That was something I had learned during the afternoon.

An unanswered question was better than an invented answer.

I had spent too long confusing the two.

I folded the page halfway.

Then stopped.

I didn't want to put it away yet.

I thought about the first time Sarah and I talked seriously about our future.

Not a particular conversation I could describe perfectly after so many years.

Just the way we used to speak.

We had assumed we would face things together.

We didn't know what those things would be.

Nobody does at the beginning of a marriage.

You make promises without knowing every situation in which you'll have to keep them.

I had never thought that made the promises meaningless.

I thought it was the reason they mattered.

Sarah had apparently come to see those promises differently once she became ill.

She looked at the uncertainty ahead and decided I shouldn't have to keep mine.

I wanted to tell her that was never her decision to make.

Then I caught myself.

Of course Sarah had the right to decide whether she wanted to remain married.

I couldn't take that right away.

What hurt was the reason she gave me.

Or rather, the reason she refused to give me.

She had made her choice while allowing me to believe our love was gone.

She had let me carry that belief for years.

I understood why she was afraid.

But I couldn't pretend the way she handled that fear hadn't wounded me.

I looked at Jessica.

She was nearby.

I didn't call her over.

I didn't need another explanation from the hospital.

I had already heard the truth.

The next conversation belonged to Sarah and me.

If she was willing.

If she was able.

I looked toward the door again.

It was hard to believe that so much of my life had changed while I remained in the same hallway.

I had arrived there believing I was looking for an ex-wife who had disappeared after spending the night with me.

I thought I needed to understand the ring.

I thought I needed to know whether the night had meant anything to her.

Now I knew she had been carrying a serious illness since before the divorce.

The question about the ring hadn't disappeared.

But it was no longer the only thing that mattered.

I wanted to know whether she was in pain.

Whether she was frightened.

Whether she wanted someone beside her.

Whether she wanted me.

That last question was the one I couldn't answer.

I hoped she did.

I didn't want to pretend otherwise.

I had never stopped wanting to be part of Sarah's life.

Even after she asked for the divorce.

Even after I signed the papers.

Even after I tried to accept that she no longer loved me.

I still thought about her.

I still missed her.

And when we spent that night together two weeks earlier, I had felt how little those feelings had changed.

Then I woke up alone.

The ring was waiting.

I had interpreted it as the final proof that I needed to stop hoping.

I felt foolish now.

Not because my interpretation had been unreasonable.

It was understandable.

But because I had treated it as certain.

Sarah hadn't left an explanation beside the ring.

She hadn't told me what it meant.

I had decided for her.

That didn't make the pain imaginary.

It meant the meaning was still unknown.

I looked down at the letter.

There were things I did know.

Sarah had loved me during the divorce.

She had been undergoing treatment.

She believed leaving would spare me from watching her condition worsen.

She had kept the letter available through years of hospital admissions.

She had cried when my name was mentioned.

Those facts were enough to change the story I had been telling myself.

I didn't need to invent another.

I wondered how Sarah would react if she knew I had read the letter.

Would she feel embarrassed?

Relieved?

Afraid?

Would she want to explain?

Would she want me to leave?

I stopped.

Again.

The same habit.

Trying to answer questions before asking them.

I lowered the paper.

There was no way to prepare perfectly for a conversation with someone I still loved after three years apart.

I could think about what I wanted to say.

I could decide not to accuse her.

I could remind myself to listen.

But I couldn't know how the conversation would unfold.

I would have to accept that.

For once, I couldn't plan away the uncertainty.

I thought about the letter's opening.

Sarah wanted me to know she had never stopped loving me.

That was a confession.

Not a demand.

Not a request.

She hadn't asked me to do anything with it.

She had only wanted me to know.

I wondered whether telling someone the truth without asking for anything in return was the closest she could come to being honest.

Perhaps.

But I wasn't going to decide that either.

I could accept the words for what they were.

The truth she had written.

And the truth I had finally received.

I looked at my own hands.

They were steadier now.

I wasn't crying at that moment.

That didn't mean I felt better.

It meant my body had finally become too tired to react to every thought.

I had been frightened and angry for hours.

I had questioned three years of memories.

I had tried to understand a decision I still believed was wrong.

And I had come back to the same conclusion every time.

Sarah had loved me.

She had been afraid.

She had left.

Those three things could all be true.

I didn't need to make one erase the others.

I thought about telling her that.

Not as an accusation.

As a beginning.

"I know why you left."

I could imagine saying it.

Then perhaps:

"I wish you had told me."

That was all I needed at first.

Simple words.

No prepared speech.

No attempt to make her feel worse.

I didn't want to overwhelm her.

I didn't know what she was capable of discussing.

She was in the hospital.

Her care came first.

The divorce had happened three years earlier.

The pain was still with me, but I could wait for the right moment to speak about it.

I wanted her to have that choice.

I wanted the conversation to happen because we were both ready.

Not because I had arrived with a letter and a list of grievances.

I lowered my head.

That was harder than I expected.

I had spent so long waiting for an explanation that part of me wanted to demand everything immediately.

I wanted the past settled.

I wanted the ring explained.

I wanted Sarah to tell me why she hadn't trusted me.

I wanted her to say she understood what she had done.

But none of those things would change the fact that she was sick.

And none of them would make the years return.

I had to decide what mattered most.

I looked toward the hospital room.

Sarah mattered most.

It was almost painfully simple.

I could be angry with her.

I could disagree with her choices.

I could tell her that she had hurt me.

But I didn't have to make those feelings the first thing she heard from me.

I wanted her to know I was there.

That I had read the letter.

That I wasn't going to turn away simply because the truth was difficult.

I wasn't promising that everything would become easy.

I couldn't.

We had already learned what happened when someone tried to decide the future without knowing how it would unfold.

I could promise only what I knew.

I loved Sarah.

I wanted to understand her.

And I was willing to listen.

I looked at the envelope again.

It had traveled through three years of hospital admissions.

Not because it contained medical information.

Because Sarah had left a part of her heart inside it.

The part she couldn't bring herself to show me when we divorced.

I wished she had trusted me with those words sooner.

I wished I could have held her hand while she was frightened.

I wished we had made decisions together instead of allowing silence to make them for us.

But wishes couldn't change the past.

I folded the letter carefully.

This time, I placed it completely inside the envelope.

Then I held it flat between my palms.

I didn't need to read it again.

The words were no longer just marks on a page.

They had changed what I knew.

I had spent three years believing Sarah had stopped loving me.

Now that belief was gone.

I had spent two weeks believing the ring meant another rejection.

Now I knew its meaning remained unanswered.

And I had spent most of the afternoon wishing someone could tell me what Sarah wanted from me.

Only Sarah could do that.

I looked at the door.

For the first time, I wasn't searching for another clue.

I wasn't trying to interpret another memory.

I was ready to accept that the next part of our story couldn't be written by my assumptions.

It would need Sarah's voice.

If she was able to give it.

I rested the envelope on my knees.

I thought about the final sentence again.

She had said there was more she wanted me to understand.

I hoped one day she would tell me.

But I no longer wanted her to feel that she had to explain herself before she deserved my kindness.

I had loved her for twenty years.

And I still loved her.

That was true before I understood the illness.

It was true after I read the letter.

It would remain true even while I struggled with the hurt she had caused.

I sat quietly.

There was nothing else I could learn from the paper.

The rest belonged to Sarah.

<a
