18 – I Had Always Believed Caring for Sarah Was Part of Loving Her, but She Had Seen That Same Love as Something Dangerous

I couldn't get one word out of my head.

Burden.

Sarah had been afraid of becoming a burden to me.

Jessica had used that word when she explained what the counselors tried to tell her.

I had immediately rejected it.

Sarah wasn't a burden.

She was my wife.

Even after the divorce, I couldn't think of her any other way without feeling something twist inside me.

But as I sat outside her hospital room, I realized I needed to understand what that word had meant to her.

Not what it meant to me.

To Sarah.

I looked at the letter.

She had written that she believed my life would be damaged if I stayed.

She feared I would spend my future caring for her instead of living the life she thought I deserved.

She had been so certain of that possibility that she ended our marriage.

I shook my head.

I still thought she was wrong.

But simply repeating that wouldn't explain why she had been afraid.

I thought about the woman I married.

Sarah had always had a mind of her own.

She didn't easily accept a decision simply because someone else said it was best.

She wanted to understand it herself.

Once she believed something, changing her mind could take time.

That had been true during our marriage.

There were occasions when I admired it.

Others when it drove me mad.

Now I was looking at the most painful consequence of that stubbornness.

Sarah believed she had to leave.

She had believed it so strongly that even the prospect of losing our marriage hadn't stopped her.

I couldn't imagine how frightened she must have been.

I knew the diagnosis had been serious.

Jessica had told me about the surgery and chemotherapy.

Those weren't small things.

I also knew I couldn't imagine Sarah's experience accurately from the outside.

I hadn't lived through her appointments.

I hadn't heard everything the doctors told her.

I hadn't been present for the treatment.

And I didn't know what thoughts kept her awake at night.

I could imagine fear.

But imagining wasn't the same as knowing.

That distinction mattered.

For years, I had assumed I understood the divorce because I understood how much it hurt.

Now I knew hurt alone hadn't explained it.

I looked at Jessica.

"Can I ask you about what Sarah told the counselors?"

Jessica came closer.

"Of course."

I hesitated.

I didn't want to make her repeat something simply because I couldn't accept it.

But there was one part I needed to understand.

"When she talked about me taking care of her, did she make it sound like I would be unhappy?"

Jessica thought before answering.

"She was worried that you would make your whole life about caring for her."

I nodded.

"Even if that's what I wanted?"

"That was part of what the counselors tried to help her consider."

I looked down.

Sarah had known how I felt about responsibility.

She knew I took our marriage seriously.

If she needed something, I wanted to help.

But the word responsibility sounded wrong when I applied it to her illness.

It made caring for Sarah sound like a job I had been assigned.

That wasn't how I saw it.

I hadn't married her because I expected twenty years of easy days.

I hadn't promised to love her only while we were both healthy.

And I hadn't imagined a future in which one of us could become too inconvenient for the other to keep loving.

I wanted to tell her that.

I wanted her to know that her illness didn't turn her into an obligation.

It didn't erase her personality.

It didn't erase our history.

It didn't erase the woman I loved.

I looked toward the room.

I wondered whether Sarah still thought of herself in those terms.

Whether the years of treatment had reinforced her fears.

Whether she had ever begun to believe she could accept help without ruining someone else's life.

I didn't know.

Jessica couldn't tell me what Sarah believed now.

The counseling conversations belonged to the past.

I was asking about a decision made years earlier.

I stopped trying to turn that past into an answer about the present.

I looked at the envelope again.

I remembered how Sarah had described her decision.

She thought leaving quickly would be kinder than allowing me to watch her health get worse.

There was something heartbreaking about that calculation.

She had been trying to choose the kind of grief I would experience.

But grief doesn't follow instructions.

I had grieved our marriage.

I had grieved the future I thought we had lost.

And for three years, I had lived with the belief that the person I loved no longer loved me back.

Now I was grieving something else.

The time we had lost because Sarah was trying to prevent my suffering.

I lowered my head.

She had wanted to spare me pain.

Instead, she had given me a different kind.

Neither of us had escaped.

I thought about whether I could tell her that without making her feel worse.

It would be difficult.

I didn't want to pretend the divorce had been painless.

But I didn't want to punish a sick woman for making a decision out of fear.

I wanted her to understand the consequences.

I also wanted her to understand that I saw the fear behind them.

Both things mattered.

I rubbed the edge of the envelope.

The paper was warmer from my hands.

I remembered Sarah sitting beside me on the porch swing.

She had told me I should live a life that wasn't spent fixing problems for her.

I hadn't understood why she kept saying it.

I wanted to talk about our marriage.

She wanted to talk about my freedom.

At the time, those subjects seemed unrelated.

Now they were inseparable.

Sarah believed being married to her would take away my freedom once her illness became impossible to hide.

I thought being married to her meant we could face that illness together.

We had been speaking about two entirely different ideas.

Neither of us had understood the other's position.

Or perhaps I had never been given enough information to understand hers.

That was more accurate.

I didn't want to take responsibility for a secret I had never agreed to keep.

I had asked questions.

Sarah had refused to answer them honestly.

That choice belonged to her.

I could understand it without pretending I caused it.

I sat back.

I thought about the difference between giving something and having it taken.

Sarah believed I would give up my life to care for her.

But giving is a choice.

That was what she hadn't allowed me to explain.

If I had chosen to rearrange my life around her treatment, that would have been my decision.

Perhaps I would have needed to set limits.

Perhaps I would have needed help.

Perhaps there would have been times when I felt exhausted.

I couldn't know.

But difficult choices weren't automatically wrong choices.

I wished Sarah had trusted me enough to make them.

I looked at Jessica.

"Did the counselors tell her that?"

Jessica nodded.

"They tried to help her understand that you should have a say."

I closed my eyes.

I was grateful.

Someone had tried.

Even if Sarah hadn't been able to hear it.

I asked another question.

"Did she ever say she wanted the divorce because she was unhappy with me?"

Jessica didn't rush to answer.

"What she explained to the counseling staff was her concern about what her illness would mean for your life."

I nodded slowly.

That was all Jessica could tell me.

I didn't ask her to guess beyond it.

The answer still mattered.

For three years, I had searched our marriage for the problem that drove Sarah away.

I had questioned things that once seemed ordinary.

I had wondered whether I was inattentive.

Whether I talked too much.

Whether I had failed to notice that she was unhappy.

Now I knew the reason Sarah had given the hospital staff.

It wasn't one of those things.

It was her illness.

And her fear of what loving her would cost me.

I felt a kind of relief.

Then shame for feeling relieved while Sarah was sick.

I looked down.

Emotions don't arrive neatly.

I could be relieved that Sarah hadn't stopped loving me.

And devastated that she had been undergoing chemotherapy.

I could feel grateful for the letter.

And angry that it had been kept from me.

I could miss her terribly.

And still be hurt by what she had done.

I was beginning to accept that none of those feelings canceled the others.

I thought about how Sarah might feel if I told her I was angry.

Would she believe it proved her fears were justified?

Would she think I resented her illness?

I didn't want that.

I wanted to be precise.

My anger was about the choice she had made without me.

Not the treatment.

Not the diagnosis.

Not the care she might need.

I could say that.

I didn't need an elaborate speech.

I only needed to be honest.

I looked toward her room again.

If Sarah could hear me, I would tell her I didn't expect her to apologize for being sick.

I would tell her she had never owed me perfect health.

I would tell her my love wasn't something she had to earn by remaining independent.

Then I would have to listen.

Because she might not see it that way.

And I couldn't simply argue her fear out of existence.

I had already learned that the counseling staff couldn't persuade her through words alone.

Maybe nothing I said would immediately change her mind.

I had to be prepared for that.

I thought about what would happen if Sarah told me she still wanted to keep her distance.

The possibility hurt.

But I had to respect it.

The truth about our divorce didn't automatically restore our marriage.

It didn't give me authority over her decisions.

It gave me an understanding I hadn't had before.

What I did with that understanding mattered.

I wanted Sarah to have the freedom to tell me what she needed now.

Without feeling she had to protect me from the answer.

I rubbed my eyes.

I was tired of thinking in circles.

The same memories kept returning.

The porch swing.

The divorce.

The letter.

The ring.

Each one had seemed clear when it happened.

Now each carried questions I hadn't known to ask.

I remembered how Sarah had spoken about my life.

She wanted me to have a future.

She wanted me to be free.

She believed staying with her would prevent that.

I wanted to tell her something I hadn't managed to express three years earlier.

She was part of the life I wanted.

Not something standing between me and it.

For twenty years, she had been the person I expected to grow older beside.

When I imagined our future, I didn't imagine freedom from Sarah.

I imagined sharing whatever happened with her.

I knew that illness could change plans.

I knew that caring for someone could be difficult.

But I had never imagined those possibilities meant our marriage had failed.

Sarah had.

That was the difference between us.

She had looked ahead and seen herself becoming a problem I would have to solve.

I had looked ahead and seen the person I wanted beside me.

I didn't know which of us had been more frightened.

I only knew her fear had made the decision.

I looked down at the letter.

The final lines remained unfinished in a way that still troubled me.

Sarah wanted to explain more if she ever found the courage.

I hoped she would.

Not because I needed her to admit I had been right.

But because I wanted to hear how she had carried those fears through the years we were apart.

I wanted to understand the woman she had become.

I wanted her to understand the man I had been during those same years.

And I wanted neither of us to use love as an excuse for deciding what the other person should feel.

I placed the envelope carefully on my knees.

The word burden still hurt.

I didn't think it would ever stop hurting completely.

But I understood it differently now.

It wasn't a description of Sarah.

It was a description of what she feared becoming.

There was an important difference.

I wished she had been able to see it.

I wished she had let me help her see it.

And I hoped that, if we were able to speak, she would finally hear something I had wanted to tell her throughout our marriage.

Needing care did not make her less worthy of love.

It never had.
