11 – The Letter Gave Me the Truth About Our Divorce, but It Could Not Tell Me What Sarah Wanted From Me Now

I had been holding Sarah's letter for so long that the envelope was no longer crisp.

I noticed that when I turned it over.

The corners had softened.

The fold across the middle looked worn.

I had treated it like something fragile.

And somehow I had nearly ruined it by refusing to let go.

I set it carefully beside me.

Then I stared at my empty hands.

It felt strange.

The letter had been my only connection to Sarah during the conversation with Jessica.

I had kept touching it as though it could answer every question.

But the paper had already told me what it could.

Sarah was sick before our divorce.

She had left because she feared my love would make me sacrifice too much.

She had never stopped loving me.

And there was more she hoped to explain herself.

Those were the facts.

I couldn't force another answer out of the page.

I looked toward her room.

The woman who wrote the letter was nearby.

I reminded myself of that.

She was no longer simply someone I remembered.

She was a patient with needs I didn't yet understand.

I wanted to know how she was feeling.

I wanted to know whether she could speak.

I wanted to know whether seeing me would comfort her or upset her.

Those questions had begun to matter more than the old ones.

I hadn't forgotten the divorce.

I hadn't forgiven every part of it.

But there was no point demanding that Sarah explain her fear before I knew whether she was well enough for a conversation.

I thought about how I had reacted when Jessica first mentioned chemotherapy.

I had almost argued with her.

Not because she had done anything wrong.

Because the information contradicted everything I believed.

I remembered insisting that Sarah would have told me.

Twenty years of marriage.

Of course she would have told me.

That was what I said.

And I had been wrong.

The realization still embarrassed me.

I had mistaken closeness for certainty.

I thought knowing Sarah meant knowing every important thing she carried.

But she had been able to hide an illness.

A serious one.

That didn't mean the marriage had been false.

It meant there were parts of her fear I hadn't seen.

I had to accept that.

Even if it hurt.

I picked up the envelope again.

I looked at the handwriting.

I remembered the small notes Sarah used to leave during our marriage.

Nothing important.

Ordinary reminders.

Things people say when they expect to see each other again.

The letter in my hand was different.

She had written it because she couldn't say the truth aloud.

I wondered how long she had looked at the page before sealing it.

I wondered whether she had planned to give it to me.

But there was no way to know.

Jessica had only told me what Sarah instructed the staff to do.

Keep it.

Bring it through her admissions.

Give it to David if he came looking for her.

That was a clear instruction.

It also left me with a question.

Had Sarah hoped I would come?

Or had she simply wanted the truth available if I did?

I couldn't choose an answer.

I was beginning to recognize that distinction.

Wanting to know wasn't the same as knowing.

I looked toward the door.

I was ashamed of how often I had confused the two.

After the divorce, I wanted to know why she left.

I decided it was because she didn't love me.

After the night we spent together, I wanted to know why she disappeared.

I decided the ring meant goodbye.

Both interpretations had felt certain at the time.

But only one had been tested against the truth.

And it had been wrong.

I wasn't going to repeat that mistake with the ring.

I needed Sarah to explain it.

If she could.

If she wanted to.

That last thought was important.

I couldn't demand answers simply because I was hurting.

She had been ill for years.

I didn't know what those years had done to her.

I didn't know how much energy she had now.

I didn't know whether she was ready to talk about the marriage.

I had to allow for those things.

I rubbed my eyes.

I was tired.

Not from anything physical I had done.

From trying to hold too many truths at once.

Sarah loved me.

Sarah left me.

Sarah was sick.

Sarah didn't tell me.

Those statements all belonged to the same story.

I had spent years believing only one of them could be true.

Now I had to accept all four.

It was harder than I expected.

I remembered the last conversation we had on the porch swing.

The way Sarah spoke about my future.

The way she insisted I shouldn't have to spend my life taking care of her.

I thought she was telling me I wasn't wanted.

I had heard rejection in every sentence.

Now I heard fear.

Not because the words had changed.

Because I knew what she had been hiding.

It made me wonder how many conversations between us had been shaped by things neither of us said.

I couldn't answer that either.

But I was beginning to see how dangerous silence could become.

Sarah believed she had to protect me.

I believed she no longer loved me.

We had each lived inside our own explanation.

Neither explanation had room for the other person's truth.

I looked at the envelope.

I wasn't ready to call Sarah's decision noble.

That would have been dishonest.

She had hurt me.

She had taken away my choice.

And she had hurt herself.

Jessica had told me about the tears.

About the way my name affected her during admissions.

I couldn't ignore that.

But neither could I pretend the divorce had been an act of kindness simply because Sarah intended it that way.

Love could lead someone to make a terrible decision.

I knew that now.

I thought about what I would tell her if I had the chance.

I wanted to say I was sorry she had been so frightened.

I wanted to say I wished she had trusted me.

I wanted to say I was angry she had decided my future without asking.

And I wanted to say I still loved her.

All of those things.

Not one instead of the others.

I wondered whether Sarah could bear hearing them.

Then I stopped myself.

I didn't know.

That was the whole point.

I had to let her decide what she could hear.

I had to ask before speaking.

I looked toward Jessica.

"Do you think she'll want to see me?"

Jessica answered carefully.

"I can't speak for Sarah."

I nodded.

"Of course."

She was right.

It was exactly what I needed to remember.

No one could tell me what Sarah wanted now.

Not Jessica.

Not the counselors who had spoken with her years earlier.

Not the letter.

Only Sarah.

And perhaps she would need time before she could answer.

I looked down at the envelope.

I had spent three years wanting her to make sense of our divorce.

Now I realized that demanding an explanation wasn't the same as understanding someone.

Understanding required listening.

It required accepting that Sarah might describe fears I didn't share.

It required hearing things that made me uncomfortable.

It required telling her how much she had hurt me without using that hurt to punish her.

I wasn't sure I could do all of that perfectly.

I didn't need to pretend.

But I wanted to try.

I had never stopped loving her.

That fact had been painful for years.

Now it gave me a reason to be patient.

I thought about the wedding ring again.

There was still a part of me that wanted to ask about it immediately.

I wanted to know why she left it in the center of my pillow.

Why she disappeared before morning.

Why she allowed me to believe it was another rejection.

But I couldn't ask those questions before I knew how she was.

The ring could wait.

The divorce could wait.

My pride could wait.

Sarah was in a hospital room.

That mattered more.

I leaned forward and picked up the envelope.

I folded it carefully.

Then I held it against my palm.

It was all I had from her that day.

But it was enough to change the direction of my thoughts.

I was no longer trying to prove that Sarah had wronged me.

I already knew she had hurt me.

I was no longer trying to prove she still loved me.

The letter had answered that.

I wanted to understand what she was facing now.

And I wanted to give her the chance to tell me without fear of what I would decide.

For three years, I had lived with Sarah's silence.

I couldn't undo it.

But if we spoke again, I wanted our next conversation to be different.

No guesses.

No decisions made for the other person.

Just the truth.

Whatever it turned out to be.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Had
