6 – I Kept Remembering the Wedding Ring Sarah Left on My Pillow, and the Letter Made That Last Morning Harder to Understand

The wedding ring was the part I couldn't stop thinking about.

Even with everything Jessica had told me.

Even with Sarah's letter resting in my hands.

I kept seeing that small circle of metal against my pillow.

Two weeks earlier, I had believed I understood it.

Sarah was leaving again.

She wanted the night we spent together to remain one night.

She wanted me to stop hoping.

That had been my conclusion.

I had treated it like a fact.

Now I wasn't so certain.

I sat in the hospital hallway and tried to remember the morning without adding anything to it.

That was difficult.

Memory has a way of changing when you learn something new.

I didn't want to pretend I had seen signs I hadn't noticed.

I didn't want to turn every small detail into proof of something.

I wanted to remember only what had happened.

Sarah had been there.

We had spent the night together.

When morning came, she was gone.

And she had left her ring on my pillow.

Nothing about those facts had changed.

Only what I thought they meant.

I looked at the envelope.

Three years earlier, Sarah had written that she still loved me.

She had explained why she believed leaving was necessary.

But there was nothing in the letter about the ring.

Nothing about the night we spent together after the divorce.

Nothing that could tell me why she had disappeared again.

I wondered whether she had wanted me to find the ring before I noticed she was gone.

It had been placed so carefully.

Dead center.

I remembered that clearly.

I remembered wondering why she would leave something that had once meant so much to us.

I had taken it personally.

Of course I had.

The ring wasn't an ordinary piece of jewelry.

It represented a marriage that had lasted twenty years.

It represented promises I had believed we would keep.

And there it was, left behind by the person who had asked to end those promises.

I had felt rejected all over again.

Now I thought about the illness.

Sarah had already been receiving treatment when we divorced.

She had spent years carrying a secret that changed the meaning of everything.

Had she left the ring because she was trying to protect me again?

I didn't know.

Had she regretted spending the night with me?

I didn't know that either.

The truth was simple.

Sarah hadn't explained it.

I had filled the silence with my own pain.

That was exactly what I had done during the divorce.

I rubbed the bridge of my nose.

The similarities bothered me.

Three years earlier, Sarah had said I deserved a different life.

I heard that as a rejection.

Two weeks earlier, she had left the ring.

I heard that as another goodbye.

Now the letter told me the first explanation had been wrong.

It didn't prove the second one was wrong too.

But I couldn't ignore the possibility.

I looked toward the hospital room.

I wanted to ask Sarah about the ring before anything else.

Then I felt ashamed.

She was sick.

She had undergone serious treatment.

And I was thinking about jewelry.

But the ring mattered.

It was the last thing she had left me.

It was the reason I had believed our time together was finished.

I tried to imagine what I would have thought if she had left a note instead.

Even a few words.

I love you.

I'm sorry.

I can't explain.

Anything.

But she had left the ring without a message.

And silence had done what silence always did between us.

It had allowed fear to decide what the truth must be.

I leaned back in the chair.

My hands were cold.

I folded the letter and placed it inside the envelope again.

I knew the words now.

I didn't need to keep rereading them.

But I wasn't ready to put the envelope away.

The writing on the front kept pulling my attention.

David.

My name looked almost gentle in Sarah's handwriting.

I thought about how angry I had been when she left me.

Not angry all the time.

Anger takes energy.

Some days I didn't have enough.

But there were moments when I blamed her for every lonely morning.

I blamed her for refusing to explain.

I blamed her for ending something we had spent twenty years building.

I thought she had decided our history was no longer important.

The letter told a different story.

Sarah had believed our history made staying together too dangerous for me.

She knew how much I loved her.

She knew I would try to help.

And she couldn't bear what she imagined that help would cost.

I shook my head.

I still disagreed.

I wanted to tell her that.

Not cruelly.

Not to punish her.

I wanted her to know that she hadn't needed to earn my love by being healthy.

She hadn't needed to spare me every difficult day.

She hadn't needed to decide that my life would be better if she wasn't in it.

I wanted to say those things clearly.

Because she had apparently spent years believing the opposite.

I looked at Jessica, who was nearby.

"Can I ask you something about what Sarah told the counselors?"

Jessica turned toward me.

"Of course."

"Did she ever talk about being afraid I would stop loving her?"

Jessica thought about that.

"What she told them was that you would give too much of yourself to care for her."

I nodded.

"That's what you said."

"She seemed certain you would stay."

I looked down.

It was still strange to hear.

Sarah had expected loyalty.

Not abandonment.

And somehow that had led her to leave.

I remembered the last part of her letter.

She wanted me to understand more if she could find the courage to tell me.

I wondered whether she had written that because she knew her explanation wasn't enough.

Perhaps she understood that love and protection weren't the same thing.

Perhaps she had begun to question her decision.

Again, I didn't know.

I was tired of not knowing.

But I had to be careful.

Sarah was the only person who could answer those questions.

And even she might not have every answer.

I looked back at the door.

"Did she know I was looking for her?"

Jessica didn't offer a guess.

She could tell me why the envelope had been kept.

She could tell me what Sarah had said years earlier.

She couldn't tell me what Sarah was thinking at that moment.

I respected that.

I had spent too long mistaking my own guesses for Sarah's thoughts.

I wasn't going to do it again.

I lowered my eyes.

There was one memory from the divorce that kept returning.

Not the paperwork.

Not the arguments.

The porch swing.

Sarah beside me.

Her voice steady even when I could tell something was wrong.

She had told me I should have a fuller life than the one she thought she could give me.

I remember thinking that she was being unfair.

I didn't want an imaginary future.

I wanted the life we already had.

I had tried to tell her.

She kept insisting.

The more I argued, the quieter she became.

Eventually, there had been nothing left for me to say.

I had mistaken that silence for a lack of feeling.

Now I pictured Sarah carrying knowledge of her illness while I asked why she was leaving.

She had been trying to end our marriage without revealing the one thing that explained her decision.

I didn't know how she managed it.

I didn't know what it cost her.

But Jessica had told me Sarah cried whenever my name came up during later admissions.

That made the silence look different.

It hadn't been easy for her.

It had hurt.

And she had continued doing it anyway.

I looked at the envelope again.

"She must have been very afraid," I said.

Jessica didn't immediately respond.

Then she spoke quietly.

"She was worried about what would happen to you."

I nodded.

"I know."

But I didn't think I truly understood.

Not yet.

I understood the facts.

I understood the explanation.

I could even understand how someone facing a serious illness might become frightened of depending on another person.

But I couldn't understand why Sarah had trusted her fear more than she trusted me.

That was the wound beneath everything else.

She had loved me.

She had believed in my loyalty.

She had known I would stay.

Yet she had decided I shouldn't be allowed to.

I thought about the ring.

Maybe it was another decision made out of fear.

Maybe it wasn't.

I stopped there.

I didn't want to turn an unanswered question into an accusation.

I had done enough of that.

I wanted Sarah to tell me what the ring meant.

And I wanted to listen without deciding her answer before she spoke.

I unfolded the letter one final time.

My eyes went straight to the beginning.

Sarah had written that she had never stopped loving me.

I ran my thumb just beneath the words.

I thought about all the nights I had wished she would say that.

All the mornings I had tried to accept that she wouldn't.

And there it was.

Written three years earlier.

Waiting in a hospital file.

I put the letter away.

Then I looked toward the room again.

For the first time, I understood that the ring and the letter were not explanations of each other.

They were two things Sarah had left behind.

One after the night we spent together.

One during the week she ended our marriage.

I had to resist the urge to force them into a meaning that suited me.

I didn't know why she had left the ring.

I did know why she had asked for the divorce.

And that knowledge changed what I was willing to believe about her.

I no longer believed Sarah had walked away because our marriage meant nothing.

I no longer believed her silence proved she didn't care.

The ring still hurt.

But it no longer felt like proof that she had stopped loving me.

I closed my hands around the envelope.

Sarah had given me a painful truth.

I would have to let her give me the rest in her own words.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Wanted to Blame Sarah for Every Lost Year, but Her Letter Forced Me to
