5 – I Had Spent Three Years Waiting for Sarah to Explain Why She Left, but Now I Feared What She Might Say

Jessica looked toward the hospital room when I told her I wanted to see Sarah.

For a moment, she didn't answer.

I watched her face.

I had already learned enough that day to understand how dangerous a simple silence could feel.

"Can I go in?" I asked.

Jessica looked back at me.

"I understand why you want to speak with her."

I nodded.

I wasn't sure she understood all of it.

I wasn't even certain I understood it myself.

The envelope was still in my hand.

Sarah had written my name on it three years earlier.

I had read the letter twice.

I could have read it twenty more times and still struggled to believe what it said.

Sarah had loved me when she asked for the divorce.

She had loved me when I walked away.

And she had continued loving me while I spent three years trying to convince myself our marriage had meant less to her than it meant to me.

That was what hurt.

Not just the illness.

Not just the secret.

The years.

Three years of believing something that wasn't true.

I looked toward the door again.

"Does she know I'm here?"

Jessica didn't give me an answer she couldn't be certain of.

She explained that Sarah's condition and the arrangements for seeing her had to be considered.

I understood that.

At least I tried to.

But understanding hospital procedures was difficult when the woman I loved was somewhere nearby.

I wanted to see her face.

I wanted to hear her voice.

I wanted to know whether she was frightened.

Those were the questions that mattered to me now.

The other questions could wait.

Or so I told myself.

Because I had hundreds of them.

Why hadn't she told me?

Why had she decided I would be better off without her?

Why had she carried my letter through years of treatment instead of sending it?

Why had she been willing to suffer alone?

I rubbed the folded edge of the envelope with my thumb.

The paper was beginning to soften.

I stopped before I damaged it.

Jessica noticed.

"Would you like a moment?"

I almost said no.

Then I looked down at my hands.

They were shaking.

"Yes."

Jessica stepped back enough to give me some privacy.

I remained against the wall.

For the first time since hearing about Sarah's treatment, I allowed myself to think about the night we had spent together after the divorce.

That memory had haunted me for two weeks.

I hadn't known what to make of it.

I still didn't.

There had been a time when being close to Sarah felt like the most ordinary thing in the world.

We had been married for twenty years.

I knew the warmth of her hand.

I knew how quiet she became when something troubled her.

I knew the small distance she sometimes put between us when she wasn't ready to talk.

Or I thought I did.

That night, after everything our divorce had done to us, we had been together again.

For a few hours, I had allowed myself to believe something might have changed.

I hadn't asked her to promise me anything.

I hadn't wanted to frighten her away with questions.

Looking back, I regretted that silence.

I had been so afraid of losing her again that I hadn't asked what being together meant.

By morning, she was gone.

Her wedding ring rested in the middle of my pillow.

I remembered staring at it.

I remembered how strange it looked against the fabric.

Such a small object.

Such a terrible message.

At least that was how I had understood it.

I thought Sarah wanted me to know that whatever had happened between us that night hadn't changed her decision.

The marriage was over.

The ring was mine to remember it by.

I had been hurt.

Then angry.

Then ashamed that I had let myself hope.

Now I stood in a hospital hallway wondering whether I had misunderstood that goodbye too.

The letter made it impossible to trust my old interpretation.

But it didn't tell me what Sarah had meant by leaving the ring.

I couldn't ask Jessica to explain that.

She hadn't been there.

Only Sarah knew.

I looked at the envelope again.

There was a date from the week our marriage ended.

There were words Sarah had hidden for three years.

And somewhere in those words was an explanation for why she could leave someone she still loved.

I thought about how certain she had sounded on the porch swing.

She had spoken as if our future had already been decided.

I had tried to argue.

Not loudly.

I had simply wanted her to explain what was wrong.

She kept talking about the life I deserved.

I remembered telling her I wasn't asking for another life.

I wanted ours.

She hadn't changed her mind.

For three years, that stubbornness had felt like rejection.

Now I understood she had been frightened.

Frightened of treatment.

Frightened of needing help.

Frightened of what would happen if I stayed beside her.

I had spent so much time believing Sarah didn't want me.

The possibility that she had needed me and refused to say it was almost unbearable.

I sat down.

I hadn't noticed the chair until then.

The envelope rested across my knees.

I looked at my name.

David.

I remembered the way Sarah said it when she wanted me to listen.

I wondered how often she had wanted to call me during those three years.

I couldn't know.

The letter didn't say.

Jessica had told me Sarah cried when my name came up during hospital admissions.

That was all.

But it was enough to make me picture her trying to hold herself together when someone asked about the person she had once married.

I rubbed my eyes.

I didn't want to imagine what every treatment had been like.

Not because I didn't care.

Because I cared so much that the possibilities frightened me.

I wondered whether she had been lonely.

Whether she had wished I were sitting beside her.

Whether she had ever looked at the hospital door and hoped I would somehow appear.

I stopped myself.

Those were guesses.

And guesses had already stolen too much from us.

I knew she had been ill.

I knew she had chosen not to tell me.

I knew she had never stopped loving me.

Everything else needed to come from Sarah.

I looked across the hallway.

Jessica was still nearby.

She hadn't forgotten me.

"Can I ask you something?" I said.

"Of course."

"Did Sarah ever say she regretted the divorce?"

Jessica considered the question.

"She spoke about how much she missed you."

I waited.

"That isn't quite the same thing," I said.

"No."

I appreciated her honesty.

I didn't want a comforting answer if it wasn't true.

For three years, I had lived with half an explanation.

I couldn't bear another one.

"She kept the letter," I said.

"Yes."

"She could have sent it."

"She could have."

"But she didn't."

Jessica looked at the envelope.

"She wanted you to receive it if you came looking for her."

I nodded.

That was what Sarah had instructed.

Nothing more.

I tried to imagine making a decision like that.

Writing the truth.

Sealing it.

Then leaving it somewhere it might never be read.

It seemed like such a lonely thing to do.

I wondered whether Sarah had been afraid of my reaction.

Perhaps she thought I would be furious.

Perhaps she feared I would come back and insist on caring for her.

Perhaps she knew the letter might undo the very separation she had worked so hard to create.

I couldn't choose among those possibilities.

I wasn't going to pretend I could.

Instead, I asked Jessica one question I had been avoiding.

"How much pain has she been through?"

Jessica's expression changed.

She answered carefully.

She couldn't explain everything about Sarah's treatment in that hallway.

But the seriousness of the situation was already clear.

There had been surgery.

There had been chemotherapy.

And Sarah was hospitalized again.

I looked down.

Three facts.

Each one heavy enough by itself.

Together, they made the past three years look entirely different.

I thought about the ordinary days I had lived during that time.

Mornings when I woke up alone and tried not to think about the marriage.

Evenings when I missed her so much I could barely concentrate.

Days when I was angry because she had not called.

I had thought we were both trying to live separate lives.

But Sarah's life had been shaped by something far more serious than our divorce.

I didn't know whether she had faced treatment alone.

I couldn't honestly claim that.

I didn't know who else had supported her.

But I knew I hadn't been there.

And I would have been.

That knowledge settled painfully in my chest.

I looked back at Jessica.

"She thought taking care of her would ruin my life."

"That's what she feared."

"Did anyone tell her she was wrong?"

"Yes."

I nodded.

"You said that earlier."

"The counseling staff tried to help her understand that caring for someone can be a choice."

I lowered my head.

"She never let me make it."

Jessica didn't answer.

She didn't have to.

I folded my hands around the envelope.

For years, I had blamed myself for failing to save our marriage.

Now I could see how little of the truth had been available to me.

I couldn't respond to an illness I didn't know existed.

I couldn't reassure Sarah about fears she had hidden.

And I couldn't fight for a marriage when she refused to tell me what she was really fighting.

That didn't make the loss easier.

It made it different.

I was no longer wondering whether I had been enough.

I was wondering why Sarah had believed she had to disappear to keep me safe.

I remembered the ring again.

The precise way it had been left on the pillow.

It had seemed deliberate.

A final statement.

But a statement of what?

Goodbye?

Love?

Regret?

I had chosen the cruelest interpretation because I was already hurt.

I couldn't do that again.

I had to hear Sarah.

I stood.

Jessica looked toward me.

"Are you all right?"

I almost laughed.

It was such an ordinary question.

I had heard it thousands of times during our marriage.

Sarah used to ask it whenever she noticed something was wrong.

And I had usually answered before thinking.

"I'm fine."

Those words were waiting on my tongue now.

I swallowed them.

"No," I said.

Jessica nodded.

"I understand."

"But I still want to see her."

I looked at the door.

"I don't need her to explain everything immediately."

My voice sounded steadier than I felt.

"I just need her to know I'm here."

I placed the envelope carefully in my hand again.

That was my decision.

Whatever Sarah's condition allowed, I wanted to be present.

I wouldn't demand answers she couldn't give.

I wouldn't decide what she meant without asking.

And I wouldn't pretend the last three years had erased the twenty before them.

I looked at Jessica.

"Please tell me when I can see her."

She acknowledged my request.

I sat down again.

The envelope stayed in my hands.

For once, I wasn't waiting for Sarah to prove she still loved me.

I already knew that.

I was waiting for the chance to show her that the truth hadn't made me leave.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Kept
