3 – When Jessica Repeated What Sarah Had Told Her Counselors, I Finally Understood Why My Wife Had Walked Away From Twenty Years Together

I had always thought loyalty would make Sarah feel safe.

Apparently, it had made her afraid.

Jessica had just told me what Sarah said during counseling.

My wife believed I would give up too much for her.

She believed I would stay through every treatment.

Every operation.

Every difficult day.

She wasn't frightened that I might abandon her.

She was frightened that I wouldn't.

I looked at the envelope in my hands.

"That's why she divorced me?"

Jessica nodded.

"That was how she explained her decision."

I thought about how calmly Sarah had spoken when our marriage was ending.

She had insisted that we shouldn't spend the rest of our lives trying to repair something that couldn't be repaired.

I remembered feeling insulted by that.

Twenty years together, and suddenly our marriage was something broken beyond saving.

I thought she was talking about us.

Now I wondered whether she had been talking about herself.

I hated that thought.

Sarah had never been something broken to me.

She was a person.

My wife.

The woman who had shared twenty years of ordinary days with me.

And when she became sick, she had apparently begun measuring her worth by what she feared I would lose.

"She could have told me," I said.

Jessica didn't disagree.

I looked at her.

"Even if she was scared, she could have said something."

"Yes."

"She didn't have to make that choice alone."

Jessica waited.

I think she understood I wasn't really asking her for answers anymore.

I was saying the things I wished Sarah had heard three years earlier.

I rubbed my forehead.

There were memories I couldn't stop going back to.

The porch swing.

Sarah sitting beside me.

Her voice when she told me we needed to separate.

She had spoken about my future as if she would no longer be part of it.

At the time, I thought that meant she wanted another life.

A life without me.

I had asked what had changed.

She hadn't given me an answer I could understand.

She talked about what I deserved.

About not spending my remaining years taking care of things that couldn't be fixed.

I remember how much that bothered me.

I didn't want a speech about what I deserved.

I wanted to know why she no longer wanted to be married.

Now I could see how carefully she had kept the real subject out of our conversation.

She hadn't wanted me to know how sick she was.

She hadn't wanted me to offer help.

She had wanted me to believe leaving was the right decision.

And I had believed it.

Not immediately.

But eventually.

Three years gives a person a lot of time to repeat the same explanation.

I told myself Sarah had stopped needing me.

I told myself she had simply grown tired of our life together.

Sometimes I blamed her.

Sometimes I blamed myself.

I never imagined that while I was asking what I had done wrong, Sarah had been facing an illness serious enough to require surgery.

That truth made me feel foolish.

Not because I should have guessed a medical diagnosis.

I couldn't have known what she deliberately kept hidden.

But I had never stopped to consider how much of her pain I might not have seen.

I looked back at Jessica.

"Was she receiving treatment that entire time?"

Jessica answered only what she knew she could share.

She told me Sarah had undergone a major procedure almost four years earlier.

She confirmed that treatment had begun before our divorce.

Those were the facts.

I didn't ask her to invent anything beyond them.

I already had enough to think about.

Almost four years.

Three years since the divorce.

I kept comparing those two numbers.

They would never look the same to me again.

"She knew," I said.

Jessica nodded.

"She knew she was ill while we were still married."

"Yes."

"And she decided not to tell me."

"Yes."

I lowered my head.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

I wondered what Sarah had felt when she first heard her diagnosis.

I wondered whether she had wanted to come home and tell me.

Whether she had rehearsed the words.

Whether she had convinced herself I would respond exactly as she feared.

I couldn't know any of that.

I had only the choices she made.

The letter.

And what she'd told the counselors.

I unfolded the page again.

I read the part where Sarah explained why she had ended our marriage.

She had believed I would be hurt less by losing her suddenly than by watching her health fail.

It was a terrible calculation.

And it had cost us three years.

I couldn't stop thinking about those years.

Not because I believed I could get them back.

I knew I couldn't.

But because Sarah had spent them without knowing how I would have answered if she'd asked me.

I would have stayed.

That wasn't a difficult question.

It never had been.

I had loved Sarah when we were young.

I had loved her when life became ordinary.

I had loved her when we disagreed and when we struggled.

I didn't understand why she thought illness would make me feel differently.

Then I looked again at the sentence about giving up my life.

Maybe I understood part of it.

Sarah had always known how seriously I took being her husband.

She knew I would put her needs before my own when she needed help.

She knew I would not stand back and watch her suffer if there was anything I could do.

In her mind, those things had become reasons to leave.

I pressed the letter against the envelope.

"I wish she'd trusted me."

Jessica looked at me.

"She spoke about you with a great deal of love."

"Then she should have let me decide."

"I understand why you feel that way."

I looked toward the room again.

I could barely imagine facing Sarah now.

What was I supposed to say?

That I understood?

I didn't.

Not completely.

That I forgave her?

I wasn't ready to decide that.

That I was angry?

I was.

But it wasn't the first thing I wanted her to hear.

I wanted to ask how she was feeling.

I wanted to know whether she was frightened.

I wanted her to know I was there.

After everything, that was still what mattered most.

"She told the counselors I would take care of her?"

"She did."

"Even after the divorce?"

Jessica thought before answering.

"She never spoke as though your feelings for her were something she doubted."

That was hard to hear.

Sarah had trusted my love enough to believe it would survive anything she asked of it.

But she hadn't trusted me enough to tell me the truth.

I had no idea how to reconcile those things.

Maybe I never would.

I read the final lines of her letter again.

She had written that there was more she wanted me to know.

She hadn't explained what that meant.

I didn't want to guess.

For too long, guesses had shaped everything I believed about my marriage.

I had guessed she didn't love me.

I had guessed I had disappointed her.

I had guessed she was happier without me.

Every one of those beliefs had grown from the silence between us.

I wasn't going to build another story out of things she hadn't said.

If Sarah could speak to me, I wanted to hear her.

From her own mouth.

Even if the truth was painful.

Especially then.

I turned to Jessica.

"Can I see her?"

Jessica glanced toward Sarah's room.

I noticed she didn't immediately answer.

That frightened me more than I wanted to admit.

I looked down at the letter.

I hadn't yet learned everything.

But I understood one thing.

Sarah hadn't divorced me because she believed I would fail her.

She had divorced me because she believed I would never stop trying to help her.

And she had mistaken that love for something she needed to save me from.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Standing Outside Sarah’s Hospital Room With
