I asked.

Jessica nodded.

"Her first major operation at this hospital was almost four years ago."

I looked down at the floor.

Four years.

I had been married to Sarah when that happened.

We had still been living our lives as husband and wife.

Or at least I had believed we were.

I put one hand against the wall.

The hallway was quiet.

Somewhere farther away, I could hear someone speaking, but I couldn't make out the words.

Jessica waited.

I think she understood that I needed a moment.

I was trying to put two dates together.

They kept coming apart in my head.

"Four years ago?" I said.

"It's all right."

I looked toward Sarah's room.

"She was already sick when she asked me to leave?"

Jessica gave a small nod.

I couldn't believe it.

Not because Sarah had been incapable of keeping something from me.

She had proved that she could.

But because the thing she had hidden was so large.

An illness.

Surgery.

Treatment that had apparently been going on while I still called her my wife.

I tried to remember whether I had noticed anything.

I could remember arguments about our marriage.

I could remember her becoming distant.

I could remember asking what I had done wrong.

But all those memories had been shaped by the explanation I believed.

Sarah wanted out.

Sarah no longer wanted the marriage.

Sarah had decided that twenty years together were enough.

Now I had to look at those same memories again.

I wasn't ready.

"Why didn't she tell me?" I asked.

"A letter."

"From Sarah?"

"Yes."

"Why do you have it?"

"She left instructions that it should be given to you if you came looking for her."

I looked at the envelope again.

Then I noticed the date.

It had been written during the same week Sarah told me she wanted a divorce.

I remembered that week.

I remembered sitting with her on the porch swing.

I remembered believing that she was trying to find a gentle way to tell me I wasn't enough.

Now there was a letter from that same week.

A letter she had never given me.

"How long has this been here?"

"Three years," Jessica said.

I finally took it.

My fingers closed around the paper.

It was lighter than I expected.

"She kept this all that time?"

Jessica nodded.

"She made sure it stayed with her hospital records whenever she was admitted."

I stared at her.

"Every time?"

"Yes."

I thought about Sarah bringing that envelope back with her.

Again.

And again.

Not sending it.

Not throwing it away.

Just making certain it remained somewhere I might find it.

I had spent three years thinking she wanted to erase me from her life.

Yet she had written my name on an envelope and kept it close through every hospital admission.

"Why would she do that?" I asked.

Jessica took a moment before answering.

"Whenever your name was mentioned during admission, she became very upset."

"Upset how?"

"She cried."

I looked away.

I didn't want Jessica watching my face.

I was already having trouble keeping myself together.

Sarah had cried about me.

I didn't understand how that could be true.

I remembered her face during our separation.

She had tried so hard to sound certain.

She had said we needed to move on.

She had said I deserved something different.

And I had believed that certainty meant she had stopped caring.

Maybe I had never understood her at all.

I turned the envelope over.

It was sealed.

Sarah had written something to me before we divorced.

Then she had carried those words through three years of treatment without allowing me to read them.

I felt angry.

I felt frightened.

More than anything, I felt ashamed of how quickly I had accepted the worst explanation of her leaving.

There were still questions I couldn't answer.

I didn't know what Sarah had wanted me to understand.

I didn't know why she had chosen silence.

But I knew something I hadn't known when I walked into that hospital.

Our divorce had not begun with the loss of her love.

It had begun with an illness she had hidden from me.

I looked at Jessica.

"Did she know I might come here one day?"

"I think she hoped you would have the chance to read it."

I pressed my thumb against the sealed edge.

For three years, I had wanted Sarah to explain herself.

Now her explanation was in my hands.

And I was afraid to open it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Envelope Sarah Kept Through Three Years of Hospital Visits Contained the Words She Had Refused to Say During Our Divorce

I had spent three years believing my wife had stopped loving me.
