20 – I Had Come to Christmas Eve Hoping the Yellow Paper Would Finally Make Sense, but What Mattered Most Was Whether We Could Be Honest With Each Other

I used to think the most important moments in a relationship were the ones that changed everything at once.

A declaration.

A promise.

A day that could be remembered by its date alone.

Perhaps that was why I had placed so much weight on December 24.

Wendell had written the date beneath the words.

He had made it seem important.

And I had spent weeks trying to understand what kind of importance it carried.

But as Christmas Eve arrived, I began to see that the date itself could not decide what our relationship would become.

Only we could do that.

The paper could not speak for Wendell.

The photographs could not explain themselves.

The paint could not tell me whether he trusted me.

Those things had brought me to the edge of a conversation.

They could not have the conversation for us.

I had to stop asking them to.

I had to let Wendell tell me what he meant.

And I had to tell him what the waiting had meant to me.

That was the part I could control.

I thought about the woman I had been after Dwight died.

I remembered how carefully I had tried to protect the life I had left.

I had made my days predictable.

I had learned to manage my loneliness without asking too much of anyone.

I had told myself that being independent meant not needing anything from another person.

For a while, that belief had helped me get through the hardest days.

But independence could become another kind of wall.

It could keep disappointment away.

It could also keep tenderness away.

I had begun to understand that I could be strong and still need someone.

I could be capable of living alone and still want a companion.

I could remember Dwight with love and still welcome Wendell into my life.

None of those things canceled the others.

I didn't need to apologize for wanting a future.

I didn't need to apologize for asking what that future might look like.

And I didn't need to pretend that a few kind words were enough to answer every question.

I could appreciate the words.

I could keep them close.

I could also ask what Wendell wanted me to understand by writing them.

That seemed fair to both of us.

I thought of the first time I saw the yellow paper.

I had been in the garage, looking at the photographs.

The sheet had been held in place with blue painter's tape.

The words had been written plainly.

For my Winnie.

The date beneath them had been December 24.

I had noticed the buttercup-yellow paint and the ramp.

Then Wendell had appeared at the top of the ramp, his pencil behind one ear and sawdust on his old blue shirt.

He had looked at the paper.

He had looked at me.

His face had gone pale.

“Oh, honey.”

Those details had stayed with me because they were the moment my questions became impossible to ignore.

Before then, I could tell myself that I was simply curious about his house.

Afterward, I knew there was something I needed to understand about the way he had been keeping me at a distance.

I still did not know exactly what his expression had meant.

I would not pretend that I did.

Maybe I would understand when he explained.

Maybe I would need to ask another question.

Either way, I was finished trying to make his expression answer for him.

I wanted to hear his own words.

And I wanted to give him a chance to hear mine.

I would tell him that I had been trying to respect his privacy.

I would tell him that I had also been hurt by the uncertainty.

I would tell him that the paper had made me hopeful, but that hope had not erased my questions.

I would tell him I cared about him.

Then I would let him speak.

I did not need to plan every sentence beyond that.

I did not need to prepare an answer for every possible explanation.

I could trust myself to respond honestly when I knew what he was saying.

That was a kind of trust I had been forgetting to give myself.

For so long, I had worried about whether Wendell was ready.

I had wondered whether he would feel pressured.

I had tried to find the gentlest possible way to approach the subject.

Those concerns were not wrong.

But my feelings deserved room, too.

I had a right to be part of a conversation about our relationship.

I had a right to ask what the date meant.

I had a right to know why the house had remained separate from the rest of our time together.

And I had a right to decide what I needed after hearing the answer.

Those rights did not make me demanding.

They made me a person who cared about the life she was trying to build.

I hoped Wendell would see that.

I hoped he would understand that my questions were not a rejection of his kindness.

They were an invitation to let that kindness become something we could trust.

I wanted a relationship where neither of us had to guess what the other person was afraid to say.

I wanted us to be able to speak plainly, even when the words were difficult.

I wanted the kind of closeness that grew from being known, not merely admired from a distance.

That was what I wanted more than a perfect Christmas.

I didn't need the evening to become a story I would tell for the rest of my life.

I didn't need every detail to fall into place.

I needed an honest beginning.

Perhaps we had already begun.

Perhaps all the small conversations we had shared had been leading us toward this one.

I could not know that yet.

But I could recognize what the moment required of me.

I needed to arrive without deciding in advance what Wendell's answer should be.

I needed to leave room for his truth.

And I needed to remain loyal to my own.

That was the balance I had been searching for.

I could hope that the photographs, the paint, and the paper were part of something thoughtful.

I could hope that Wendell had been trying to prepare a moment he wanted to share with me.

I could hope that the date meant something good.

But I could not turn those hopes into facts.

The facts would have to come from the man who had written the words.

I had spent enough time guessing.

Now I wanted to listen.

And if the truth brought us closer, I would welcome it.

If it showed us that we had more to learn about each other, I would try to be patient without going silent again.

If it asked me to reconsider something, I would do that honestly, too.

I could not promise that every answer would be easy.

I could promise that I would not run from the conversation simply because it mattered.

That was the courage I wanted to bring into this new chapter of my life.

Not the courage to demand a particular ending.

The courage to let the truth be known.

I thought again about the yellow paper.

It had been a small thing in a garage.

A sheet torn from a yellow legal pad.

Two pieces of blue tape.

Three words and a date.

Yet it had made me look more carefully at what I wanted from Wendell and what I was willing to offer him.

It had reminded me that affection was important, but affection alone could not answer every question.

It had reminded me that patience was valuable, but patience should not require me to disappear.

And it had reminded me that starting again after loss did not mean abandoning everything I had learned.

I could carry the love I had known with Dwight.

I could carry the grief that remained.

I could carry the hope I felt for Wendell.

I could carry my questions, too.

There was room for all of it.

As Christmas Eve settled around me, I let myself feel the anticipation without trying to control it.

I was still curious.

I was still nervous.

I was still hopeful.

But I was no longer waiting for a piece of paper to tell me what my future would be.

I was waiting for a conversation.

And when it came, I would meet it as myself: a woman who had loved deeply, lost someone dear, and found the courage to open her heart again.

I did not know exactly what Wendell would say.

I did not know what the photographs meant or why the paint was buttercup-yellow.

I did not know why December 24 mattered so much to him.

Those answers remained with him.

But I knew what I wanted to say.

I wanted to tell him that I cared.

I wanted to tell him that I needed honesty.

I wanted to tell him that I was ready to listen.

And I wanted us both to have the chance to decide what our future could become.

The yellow paper had given me a reason to hope.

The truth would have to give that hope somewhere to stand.

The End

Read more original stories on <a
