he said.

"So have I."

He nodded.

"I know it's not an easy time for you."

I looked down at my hands.

There was no reason to pretend otherwise.

Christmas had changed after Dwight died.

The decorations were still the same ones I had used for years.

The familiar things still came out of their boxes.

But the person who had helped me put them up was gone, and every little tradition seemed to remind me of that fact.

I had tried to make the holiday smaller.

I had tried to avoid expecting too much from it.

Mostly, I had tried not to think about how different it would feel to spend another Christmas without Dwight.

Wendell knew some of that.

I had spoken to him about my husband.

I had told him about the ordinary things I missed, the conversations, the habits, and the way Dwight could make me feel that there was time for everything.

I hadn't told him every detail.

Some memories were still too personal to share.

But I had told him enough to explain why the season could be difficult.

"I don't want you to feel you have to do anything special for me," I said.

He shook his head.

"That's not what I'm trying to do."

"Then what are you trying to do?"

He looked toward the yellow paper.

"I want to give you a day you can remember without feeling bad about it."

I didn't answer immediately.

I understood what he meant.

I also understood how difficult that might be.

A new memory did not erase an old one.

A kind gesture did not make grief disappear.

But perhaps a day could hold more than sadness.

Perhaps I could remember Dwight and still enjoy being with Wendell.

I had been trying to work that out for myself.

I hadn't realized Wendell had been thinking about it too.

"You don't have to rescue me from Christmas," I said.

He gave a small smile.

"I'm not trying to rescue you."

"Good."

"I just want to be there."

That was different.

I looked at him for a long moment.

It was the sort of thing I had wanted to hear without knowing how to ask for it.

I didn't need grand plans.

I didn't need somebody to promise that the day would be wonderful.

I needed to know I wouldn't have to pretend to be happy, and I wouldn't have to apologize if I wasn't.

"You can be there," I said.

His expression softened.

"I'd like that."

We sat quietly for a while.

The date on the wall seemed less mysterious now, although I still didn't know everything about it.

December 24.

Christmas Eve.

The words had been placed there with care.

They were connected to something Wendell wanted to share with me.

That was enough to change how I saw the photographs.

They were no longer simply evidence of a private life I hadn't been allowed to enter.

They were part of a plan.

I didn't know the full shape of it.

But I could see that the plan mattered to him.

I looked around the garage again.

The workbench was crowded.

A few tools lay where somebody had put them down.

The yellow paint stood out against the ordinary surfaces around it.

Nothing about the place looked finished.

Yet I was beginning to understand that Wendell had not been trying to create something perfect.

He had been trying to create something meaningful.

Those were different goals.

I knew that because I had spent months trying to make my own life look normal again.

I had kept the house tidy.

I had answered calls.

I had gone out when people invited me.

I had smiled when I was expected to smile.

But none of those things had made me feel whole.

The smallest moments had helped more.

A conversation that lasted longer than I expected.

A cup of coffee shared without rushing.

A person who could sit beside me while I remembered Dwight without trying to fix my sadness.

Maybe Wendell understood that.

Maybe he was trying to give me something that didn't require me to pretend.

I wanted to believe so.

But I also knew that understanding the date did not answer every question.

I still hadn't seen the part of his life he had kept hidden.

I still didn't know why he had thought the house needed to be ready first.

And I still needed to know whether his willingness to explain himself would last beyond this one conversation.

I had no intention of turning one tender moment into proof that everything was settled.

I had done enough of that already.

Wendell seemed to understand that I was still thinking.

He didn't rush me.

He picked up a small piece of wood from the workbench and turned it in his hand.

Then he set it down beside the pencil.

"I should have trusted you with the plan," he said.

"Yes."

"I thought I was doing the right thing."

"I believe you."

He looked relieved.

"But doing the right thing for someone isn't always the same as doing it with them."

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he nodded.

"I hadn't thought about it that way."

I believed him.

I had made the same mistake in my own life.

I had assumed I knew what other people needed because I loved them.

Sometimes I had been right.

Sometimes I had made decisions for them that left them feeling unheard.

Love didn't automatically make a person wise.

It only made the mistakes more painful.

I looked at the yellow paper again.

"Are you going to leave that there?"

He glanced at it.

"Would you like me to take it down?"

I considered the question.

Part of me wanted to say yes.

The words had made me emotional, and I wasn't sure I wanted to be reminded of them every time I entered the garage.

Another part of me wanted them to stay exactly where they were.

I wanted to remember the moment I had finally understood that there might be more to Wendell's silence than rejection.

"Leave it," I said.

He nodded.

I stood and adjusted my purse.

The conversation had taken more out of me than I expected.

I was relieved, but I was also tired.

There were still things I needed to understand.

For the first time, though, I no longer felt that I had to discover them alone.

Wendell walked with me toward the ramp.

He didn't reach for my hand until I offered mine.

That small hesitation touched me more than a grand gesture would have.

He was giving me room to decide.

I took his hand.

We stood together for a moment beneath the garage light.

I looked back at the photographs.

The paper remained fixed to the wall by its two pieces of blue tape.

The date was still there.

The yellow paint still caught the light.

Nothing had changed in the room.

But something had changed between us.

I had told him how his silence made me feel.

He had listened.

And I had begun to see the difference between a secret kept out of shame and a surprise guarded out of fear.

I didn't know yet which explanation covered every part of Wendell's behavior.

I only knew that I was willing to hear him out.

That evening, when I was alone again, I thought about the words on the wall.

I had expected to feel foolish for having doubted him.

Instead, I felt something more complicated.

I was glad the words were there.

I was grateful that he had wanted to do something for me.

But I was also reminded that I should never have needed to wonder for so long whether I belonged in his life.

Both things could be true.

I was beginning to understand that loving someone did not mean abandoning my own judgment.

It meant allowing room for their explanation without pretending my hurt had never happened.

I could do that.

I believed I could.

And for the first time in months, I looked toward Christmas with something other than dread.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: I Went Home With More Hope Than Answers, Knowing That Whatever Wendell Had Planned Would Have to Leave Room for the Truth

Wendell took a moment before he continued.
