4 – The Photographs on Wendell’s Garage Wall Made Me Stop Thinking About His Closed Door and Start Looking at What He Had Kept Hidden

When I finally found myself inside Wendell's garage, I wasn't prepared for what I would see.

I had spent so long thinking about the house he wouldn't let me enter that I had never considered how much I might learn from the things surrounding it.

The garage was a working space.

There were tools, supplies, and the ordinary signs of somebody who spent time repairing things with his own hands.

It wasn't the kind of place that would have frightened me.

I had seen messier rooms.

I had seen houses where people had postponed repairs until there was no easy way to pretend the work could wait.

Nothing about an untidy space would have made me think less of Wendell.

That was what made the details I noticed so difficult to dismiss.

I began to see that some things had been arranged with care.

There were objects that looked as though they had been kept for a reason.

There were photographs.

And there was a sense that the space held something more personal than the workbench and tools suggested.

I found myself looking more closely than I intended.

I had spent months telling myself that I only wanted to understand Wendell's life.

Now I was in a place that might tell me something about it, and I felt almost guilty for wanting to know.

I didn't want to invade his privacy.

I didn't want to find something that would change how I saw him.

But curiosity had become stronger than my determination to pretend I wasn't curious.

I looked around.

Then I noticed the photographs.

They held my attention in a way the other things didn't.

I couldn't explain it at first.

There was something about seeing personal pictures in a place where I had never expected to find them.

They made the garage feel less like a workshop and more like a room somebody had used to keep a private part of his life alive.

I looked at them again.

And then I noticed the paper beneath them.

Three words had been written there.

I stopped moving.

For a moment, I didn't understand why those words affected me so strongly.

They were simple words.

Nothing elaborate.

Nothing that looked important to anyone who didn't know the person they referred to.

But I knew the name they carried.

Winnie.

I had seen it before.

I knew it belonged to me.

I stood there, trying to make sense of what I was seeing.

The photographs were close enough for me to understand that they had been placed there deliberately.

The paper had not been left carelessly on a table.

It had been attached to the wall.

Somebody had wanted it to remain there.

I looked at the words again.

Then I looked at the photographs.

My first feeling was confusion.

My second was something I couldn't immediately name.

I had spent so much time wondering what Wendell was hiding that I had never considered he might have been keeping something for me.

The thought seemed impossible.

It was too much to accept all at once.

I wanted to believe it.

I also wanted to be careful.

I had learned that a person could build an entire story around a few small details and then discover that none of it was true.

I didn't want to do that with Wendell.

Not now.

Not after everything I had told myself about him.

I moved closer to the wall.

The paper had been torn from a yellow legal pad.

Two pieces of blue tape held it in place.

Those little details stayed with me.

The yellow paper.

The blue tape.

The handwriting.

I looked at the words again, searching for some explanation that would make them less personal.

There wasn't one.

The message was meant for Winnie.

For me.

I felt my eyes begin to fill.

I blinked hard, embarrassed even though nobody was there to see me.

I had not expected to feel anything so powerful in that garage.

I had come to understand something about Wendell.

Instead, I had found evidence of a feeling I hadn't known he was carrying.

It was difficult to describe what happened inside me.

For months, I had been asking myself whether Wendell trusted me enough to let me into his life.

Now I was standing in a place that suggested he had been thinking about me in ways I hadn't understood.

The realization was almost painful.

I wanted to ask him why.

I wanted to know how long the photographs had been there.

I wanted to know why he had written those words and what he had hoped they would mean.

But I couldn't ask any of those questions.

Not yet.

I was still trying to understand the ones already in front of me.

I reached toward the paper.

My fingers stopped just short of touching it.

Then I noticed something written beneath the message.

A date.

December 24.

Christmas Eve.

I read it carefully.

The date seemed to change the meaning of everything around it.

I thought about the way Wendell had behaved whenever Christmas came up.

I remembered how thoughtful he became, how he seemed to carry something private behind his quiet expression.

I had assumed he was remembering somebody or something from his own past.

Now I wondered whether the date had another meaning.

I couldn't know.

I didn't want to assume.

But the three words and the date were there together, deliberately placed beneath the photographs.

They belonged together.

I looked from the paper to the wall, then toward the ramp leading through the garage.

I noticed the buttercup-yellow paint.

It was a small detail, but it caught my attention because the color looked chosen rather than accidental.

The photographs.

The handwritten message.

The date.

The paint.

I had no explanation for any of it.

And yet, for the first time since I had begun seeing Wendell, I felt that I might be looking at something he had wanted me to discover.

That possibility frightened me almost as much as it moved me.

I had spent months trying to convince myself that his secrecy was harmless.

Now I wondered whether I had misunderstood the reason for it entirely.

Maybe the closed door had not meant what I thought it meant.

Maybe Wendell had been afraid of something I couldn't see.

Or maybe I was once again turning a few details into the answer I wanted.

I couldn't tell.

I stood there with my purse hanging from one shoulder, staring at the paper until the writing blurred.

I read the message again.

Then I read it once more.

My throat tightened.

I had never expected to find my own name, or the name I knew as mine, waiting for me in a place Wendell had kept apart from the rest of our relationship.

I didn't know whether to feel loved, confused, or ashamed of all the suspicions I had carried.

Perhaps it was all three.

I reached out and lightly touched the edge of the paper.

The yellow sheet shifted beneath my fingers.

That tiny movement made the moment feel real.

I wasn't imagining it.

The words were there.

The date was there.

And whatever they meant, they had been kept in this garage for a reason.

I was still staring at them when I heard my name.

"Winona?"

I turned so quickly that my purse slipped down my arm.

Wendell stood at the top of the ramp.

A pencil rested behind one ear.

Sawdust marked the front of his old blue work shirt.

He looked first at me.

Then his eyes moved toward the photographs.

Finally, he saw the paper.

His expression changed.

The color seemed to leave his face as he understood what I had found.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The radio continued playing somewhere behind me.

Wendell stood perfectly still.

I had wanted answers from him for months.

Now he was looking at me as though the answer had arrived before he was ready to give it.

I opened my mouth, but no words came.
