Margaret stood beside her, silent and watchful, while I tried to understand why Michael had written to Sarah so shortly before his death.

“Read the rest,” I said gently.

Sarah unfolded the letter and continued.

Michael explained that he had been trying to arrange a meeting between Sarah and Emily. He believed the child should know that Sarah had helped care for her and that the adults who had protected her were not all strangers. He had asked Daniel to help make the arrangements because he trusted him to keep the meeting private.

But Daniel had become increasingly concerned that contact with Sarah might reveal Emily's location to people searching for the missing records. Michael acknowledged the risk, yet he believed Sarah should be allowed to make her own decision.

The letter ended with a request: if anything happened to him, Sarah should not assume that Daniel's version of events was complete.

She stopped reading and stared at the final line.

“I never received this,” she said.

Margaret nodded slowly. “I believe you.”

“Why was it in the storage unit?”

“Perhaps Michael left it there so it would survive if the house was searched.”

I looked at the envelope. The flap had been sealed, and the paper showed no sign of having been opened before we found it.

“Who had access to this unit after Michael died?” I asked.

Margaret looked toward the corridor.

“Daniel. His half-sister. Possibly the man he called Robert.”

“Then any of them could have removed it.”

Sarah folded the letter carefully.

“Daniel told me Michael wanted me to stay away from Emily. He said Michael had changed his mind because the danger was too great.”

“Did you believe him?”

“I didn't know what else to believe. I was grieving, and Daniel said he had spoken to Michael shortly before the accident. He made it sound as though the decision had already been made.”

I felt a deep anger on her behalf, but I also understood that anger would not change the years she had lost. The only useful thing we could do now was establish what had happened and decide how to approach Emily without adding another layer of confusion to her life.

Margaret asked the clerk whether we could take the letters for safekeeping. After reviewing the paperwork, he allowed us to remove the documents listed on the inventory, provided we signed a receipt and agreed not to discard anything until the ownership question had been resolved.

We packed the papers carefully and left the storage unit locked behind us. The clerk retained copies of the relevant documents and noted that the contents had been inspected by people claiming a connection to the original lease.

Outside, Sarah held Michael's letter against her coat.

“I need to speak to Daniel,” she said.

I agreed.

We called him from the car and asked him to meet us at home that evening. This time, he did not refuse. He said he would come after work and promised to bring anything he still had from the period following Michael's death.

The hours before his arrival passed slowly. Sarah read the letter several times, searching for some indication of what Michael had intended to do next. I examined the property records, trying to determine whether the transfers were legitimate. The documents were complicated, and I knew we would need professional advice before drawing conclusions.

One page, however, stood out. It listed a transfer involving a property near the railway station. The transaction had been approved by a company that appeared to have no direct connection to Michael's family. A handwritten note in the margin read, Do not include in final estate inventory.

I copied the page and set it aside.

At seven, Daniel arrived carrying a small cardboard box. He looked exhausted, and his hair was damp from the rain. He set the box on the table and sat down without removing his coat.

Sarah placed Michael's letter in front of him.

“Did you know he wrote this?”

Daniel read the first paragraph, then lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Did you know he wanted me to see Emily?”

“Yes.”

Sarah's voice trembled. “Then why did you tell me he had changed his mind?”

Daniel stared at the letter.

“Because I believed the meeting would put her at risk.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

He rubbed his hands together.

“Michael was dead. The people searching for the records were still around, and I thought any contact between you and Emily would give them another way to find her. I believed I was preventing something terrible from happening.”

“You made the decision for me.”

“I thought I had to.”

“You let me believe Michael had rejected me.”

Daniel's face tightened. “I didn't want you to carry the guilt of knowing you could have seen her and chose not to.”

Sarah stared at him in disbelief.

“You gave me the guilt anyway. You just made it impossible for me to understand what I was guilty of.”

Daniel lowered his head.

For a long time, nobody spoke. The clock ticked above the doorway, and the rain tapped against the windows.

I opened the cardboard box he had brought. Inside were several old letters, a notebook, and a small packet of photographs. Most were familiar, but one showed Michael standing beside a car outside the house where the first photograph had been taken.

On the back, Michael had written a date and a single word: Before.

“Before what?” I asked.

Daniel looked at the picture.

“Before the accident.”

“Did you take this photograph?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“I don't know.”

I showed him the property record with the handwritten note about the estate inventory.

“Do you recognize this transaction?”

He examined it carefully.

“Yes. Michael was investigating that transfer before he died.”

“Did he believe it was fraudulent?”

“He believed the property had been moved to conceal who actually controlled it. He didn't know whether the transfer itself was illegal, but he thought someone had altered the paperwork afterward.”

“Who benefited?”

Daniel looked away.

“My half-sister's family.”

Sarah leaned forward.

“Did you know that when you gave the papers to Robert?”

“I suspected it. I didn't have enough evidence to accuse them.”

“Then why give him the documents?”

“Because he said he could verify whether the copies matched the originals. I thought if I could establish that the papers were genuine, I could take the evidence to someone who would investigate properly.”

“And did he?”

Daniel shook his head.

“He stopped responding. I later learned he had been working for my half-sister, but I couldn't prove what he had done with the documents.”

I asked Daniel whether he had confronted his half-sister.

“Once. She told me Michael had been confused and that the records were incomplete. She said I was embarrassing the family by repeating accusations I couldn't substantiate.”

“Did you believe her?”

“No. But I had no proof, and every time I tried to find more, another lead disappeared.”

I studied him for a moment.

“Why didn't you tell us any of this?”

“Because I was ashamed.”

The answer was so direct that it caught me off guard.

Daniel looked at Sarah.

“I promised Michael I would protect Emily. I thought I could keep her safe by keeping everyone away from her. Then years passed, and I realized I had no idea whether she was happy, whether she knew about her father, or whether she had ever wanted to see any of us.”

Sarah's expression softened slightly, though her hurt remained.

“You could have told me.”

“I know.”

“You could have let me decide whether the risk was worth taking.”

“I know.”

Daniel's voice broke on the second admission.

I placed the recent photograph of Emily on the table.

“Someone sent us this picture. Do you recognize the man beside her?”

Daniel studied it for a long time.

“Andrew,” he said. “He was part of the family who raised her.”

“Could he have sent it?”

“Possibly. He knew where Emily was, and he knew about the old disputes. But I can't say for certain.”

“Would he have a reason to contact Sarah?”

Daniel looked at the picture again.

“Maybe Emily asked him to.”

Sarah's hands trembled.

“Do you think she knows about me?”

“I think she knows more than we assumed,” Daniel said. “But I don't know what she's been told.”

I asked him whether he would help us find her. He nodded, though I could see that the request frightened him.

“I will,” he said. “But we have to be careful. My half-sister may still be looking for the second copy, and if she believes Emily knows where it is, she could try to contact her.”

I placed the property documents beside Michael's letter.

“Then we need to establish whether Emily has any connection to those records before we involve her in this dispute.”

Daniel agreed.

For the first time since the emergency call, we were discussing what to do rather than arguing about who should be allowed to know. It was not forgiveness, and it did not repair the damage Daniel had caused. But it was a beginning.

Before he left, Daniel gave Sarah an old envelope containing the letters he had kept after Michael's death.

“I should have given these to you years ago,” he said.

Sarah accepted them without answering.

After Daniel left, I read through the letters and found one addressed to Margaret. It mentioned a final meeting Michael had arranged with someone who knew where the second copy was hidden.

The letter did not name that person.

It gave only a location: a property listed in the estate records, one that had been transferred through the company we had just discovered.

I looked at Sarah.

“Tomorrow, we're going to find out who owns that property now.”

She nodded, then looked down at Michael's letter.

“And after that,” she said, “we're going to find Emily.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Name Beneath the Deed

Sarah read the sentence again, then lowered the letter as though the paper had become too heavy to hold.
