She said she had kept it for decades and would not surrender it until she knew where the records were and what they contained. I understood her caution, though I wished she would let us take the original to a safer place.

Instead, I photographed every page and made two copies. One stayed with Margaret, and the other went into my coat pocket. We agreed to visit the storage facility the next morning, taking the photograph of locker seventeen and the information from Michael's note.

Sarah barely spoke during the drive back to our house. She kept looking at the copy of Michael's letter, especially the sentence about Daniel confusing Emily's needs with what he wanted to prove.

“He was trying to protect her,” she said at last.

“Perhaps he was.”

“You don't believe that.”

“I believe he may have started with good intentions. I don't know what happened after that.”

Sarah folded the letter and returned it to the envelope.

“Daniel has spent his whole life believing he failed Michael. If the records could prove that Michael was right, Daniel might think finding them would make everything right again.”

“Even if it meant hurting Emily?”

She did not answer.

The following morning, Margaret met us outside the storage facility. It stood behind a row of small commercial buildings near the old railway station, with a security gate and a reception office that smelled of dust and printer ink. The clerk checked our identification and asked whether we had an access code.

We did not.

I showed him the photograph of locker seventeen and explained that we were trying to locate an old unit that might have been rented under Michael's name. The clerk checked the records, then frowned at his screen.

“This unit was closed years ago,” he said. “The contents were transferred to a larger unit after the original lease expired.”

“Can you tell us where?” I asked.

“Not without confirming who has legal authority over the account.”

Margaret produced a copy of Michael's letter and explained that she had been named as the person responsible for preserving the materials. The clerk examined the documents and called his supervisor.

After several minutes, he returned with a form and asked us to sign a declaration explaining our connection to the property. He said the facility would allow us to inspect the contents if the records showed that the items had been abandoned and transferred to storage under the original agreement.

It took nearly an hour to resolve the paperwork. Finally, the clerk led us through a corridor of metal doors to a unit at the back of the building.

He unlocked it and stepped aside.

Inside stood several cardboard boxes, a small filing cabinet, and a wooden crate with a broken latch. Dust covered most of the surfaces, but one box near the door had been opened recently. Its lid rested crookedly on top, and a narrow strip of paper protruded from beneath it.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

It was Daniel's.

The note contained a date and a brief instruction: Keep the letters separate. Do not destroy anything until the second copy is found.

Sarah stared at it.

“He was here.”

Margaret picked up the note carefully.

“Or someone wanted us to believe he was.”

I examined the box. It contained envelopes, photographs, and several folders of old paperwork. The letters appeared to be the same correspondence Michael had described in his note. Some were addressed to Margaret, others to Daniel, and a few bore the names of people I did not recognize.

I opened a folder and found photocopies of property transfers. Several documents listed companies with similar names but different addresses. There were handwritten annotations beside certain payments, and some figures had been circled in red ink.

I could not tell whether the papers proved wrongdoing. They did show that Michael had been examining transactions involving properties owned by his family.

Margaret stood beside me, reading over my shoulder.

“These are the records he was talking about,” she said.

“Are they the second copy?”

“Some of them may be. But this isn't everything.”

I searched the remaining boxes. There were personal letters, receipts, old photographs, and a small notebook filled with dates and initials. At the bottom of the wooden crate, I found a metal key attached to a paper tag.

The number seventeen was stamped into the metal.

Sarah took a sharp breath.

“Is that the key from Michael's note?”

“I think so.”

I turned it over. A second number had been scratched into the reverse side, almost too faint to read.

Seventeen was the number painted on the locker in Michael's photograph. But the scratched number suggested the key might have belonged to something else before it was placed in storage.

I showed it to Margaret.

She examined it closely.

“Michael used to label things in a way that made sense only to him,” she said. “He may have intended this key for another container.”

“Then why leave it here?”

“Perhaps he wanted someone to find it.”

We continued searching until the clerk reminded us that the facility would close in half an hour. I photographed the documents and made a written inventory, careful not to remove anything until we had confirmed our right to do so.

Then I found a sealed envelope tucked into the back of the filing cabinet.

It was addressed to Daniel.

The envelope had been opened and resealed with transparent tape. Inside was a letter dated several months after Michael's death. The writer said that the documents had been copied and that the second set was safe. The letter also warned Daniel not to contact Emily's adoptive family.

At the bottom was a signature: E.R.

I recognized the initials from the earlier letter Sarah had kept.

Margaret read the message twice.

“Someone was helping Michael,” she said. “And they continued helping after he died.”

“Do you know who E.R. was?”

“No.”

I placed the letter with the others.

As we prepared to leave, I noticed that one of the boxes contained a recent receipt from a locksmith. The date was less than a year old, and the service description referred to a replacement lock for a storage unit.

The name on the receipt was not Daniel's.

It was the name of Michael's older half-sister, the woman Daniel had mentioned.

I looked at Margaret.

“Do you know whether she has been here?”

Margaret shook her head, but her expression changed.

“She believed the estate belonged to her. If she thought Michael had left records that could challenge the way the properties were transferred, she would have reason to look for them.”

I called Daniel from the corridor.

He answered immediately.

“We found the storage unit,” I said. “There are letters and property documents inside. We also found a receipt in your half-sister's name.”

Daniel was silent.

“Did you know she had access?”

“No.”

“Did you give her the key?”

“No.”

“Then why is her name on the receipt?”

“I don't know.”

I heard a door close on his end of the call.

“Listen,” he said, “if her name is on that receipt, you need to get out of there.”

“Why?”

“Because she was the person I gave the papers to.”

The words landed heavily.

“You told me you didn't know where he was.”

“I said I didn't know where the man was. I never said I gave everything to him.”

“You let me believe the records had disappeared.”

“I thought they had.”

“Who is this man?”

Daniel hesitated.

“His name is Robert. He worked for my half-sister's family. I gave him the papers because he said he could help determine whether they were authentic.”

“And you never followed up?”

“I tried. He stopped answering my calls.”

I looked at the receipt again.

“Your half-sister has been paying to keep this unit open.”

Daniel's breathing became uneven.

“Then she's been looking for something, too.”

“Something like the second copy?”

“Possibly.”

I asked him why he had never told us that his half-sister might be involved. He said he had not wanted to accuse her without evidence, especially because she had been estranged from Michael for years.

I reminded him that withholding information was not the same as avoiding an accusation.

He did not respond.

When I ended the call, Margaret was standing beside the open storage unit. She had found another envelope beneath the filing cabinet, this one addressed to Sarah.

She held it out.

Sarah stared at her name, written in Michael's unmistakable handwriting.

“I thought he had stopped writing to me,” she whispered.

I handed her the envelope.

The letter inside was dated two days before Michael died.

Its first sentence was simple.

Sarah, if Daniel tells you I chose to keep you away from Emily, he is not telling you the whole truth.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: Michael’s Final Letter Revealed a Choice Sarah Had Never Been Allowed to Make, and Daniel Finally Had to Face It

Margaret refused to let us leave with Michael's envelope.
