She did not reach for the sealed envelope again, and I could see that she was weighing whether showing it to us would honor Michael's wishes or violate them.

“What exactly did Michael tell you?” I asked.

Margaret looked at Sarah before answering.

“He came to my house three days before the accident. He was exhausted, frightened, and convinced someone had been going through his office. He said he'd made copies of several documents and placed them in different locations. One set was meant to be found if the original records disappeared. The other was meant to stay hidden until Emily was old enough to understand why her father had died.”

Sarah pressed a hand against her chest.

“He thought he was going to die?”

“I don't know. He didn't say that. But he spoke as though time was running out.”

“Did he mention who was following him?” I asked.

“He believed his father's estate was being manipulated by people who wanted to control certain properties. He said there were payments that didn't match the official records, and he suspected someone had been using companies with no obvious connection to the family.”

“Did he have proof?”

“He believed the copies would provide it.”

I looked at the sealed envelope. “And this contains the second copy?”

“No. Michael said it contained instructions about where to look. He wanted the records kept separate from the instructions so that no one could find everything by taking one box.”

The arrangement made sense. If someone discovered the envelope, they would not automatically have the documents. If someone found the documents, they might not know who else had seen them or where the evidence had been preserved.

Margaret removed a small pair of scissors from the desk drawer and placed them beside the envelope.

“I have not opened it,” she said. “I have spent years wondering whether I should.”

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

“Why didn't you contact me?”

“Because I believed you had chosen to leave the matter behind. Then Daniel accused me of interfering, and I thought the safest thing was to wait until Emily was old enough to make her own decisions.”

“But she is old enough now.”

“Yes. And someone has started looking for the records again.”

I studied the handwriting on the envelope. Michael had written Margaret's name and a date, but there was no address. The flap was sealed with yellowing tape.

“Do you think the person who sent the photograph knows about this envelope?” I asked.

“I don't know. They may know I kept it. They may know only that Michael left something with me.”

“Could Daniel have told them?”

Margaret's expression changed.

“I don't want to accuse him without evidence.”

“Neither do I. But he knew about the records, and someone is warning us to stop looking.”

She nodded reluctantly.

I asked whether we could open the envelope together. Margaret looked at Sarah, then at me.

“Before we do, I need you to understand something. If these records expose wrongdoing, they may also reveal things about people who were not responsible for it. Michael was worried about Emily. He did not want her life reduced to an argument over money or property.”

“We won't publish anything,” I said. “We want to understand what happened and make sure Emily can decide what she wants to know.”

Margaret considered that for a moment, then handed me the scissors.

I cut carefully along the edge of the envelope and removed a folded sheet of paper. Michael's handwriting filled both sides. The first paragraph referred to the records he had copied and warned that the documents should not be returned to the family house.

The second paragraph mentioned a storage facility near the railway station.

The third contained a name.

Daniel.

Sarah stared at the page.

“Why would Michael write Daniel's name?”

I continued reading. The note said that Daniel had been entrusted with a key but had not been told what it opened. Michael had instructed him to keep the key separate from the records and to give it to Margaret only if he believed the documents were in danger.

I looked up.

“Did Daniel ever give you a key?”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

“Did he ever mention one?”

“Not to me.”

I read the final lines aloud.

If Daniel comes asking for the second copy, do not assume he is acting for Emily. He may believe he is protecting her, but he has begun confusing what she needs with what he wants to prove.

The room became silent.

Sarah covered her mouth. Margaret stared at the paper, her expression turning from confusion to something close to grief.

“He knew,” she whispered.

“Who?” I asked.

“Michael knew Daniel was becoming obsessed with the records.”

I folded the note and placed it back on the table.

The warning did not prove that Daniel had done anything wrong. It did show that Michael had been concerned about his judgment before the accident. That made Daniel's repeated refusal to explain himself more troubling.

I called him.

He answered after two rings.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“Home.”

“Did Michael ever give you a key to a storage facility?”

There was a pause.

“Why are you asking?”

“Because we found a letter he left with Margaret.”

Daniel exhaled sharply.

“Did she open it?”

“Yes.”

He swore under his breath.

“Listen to me. You need to leave those papers alone.”

“That's not an answer.”

“It's the only advice I can give you.”

“Michael specifically warned Margaret not to assume you were acting in Emily's interests. Why?”

Daniel said nothing.

“Did you know he wrote that?”

“No.”

“Did you have a key?”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

Sarah stood up so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.

“What did it open?” I asked.

Daniel's voice dropped.

“A storage unit.”

“Where?”

“Near the old railway station.”

“Did you ever go there?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After Michael died.”

“Did you find the records?”

“No.”

I looked at Margaret. She was watching me closely.

“Did you find anything?”

Daniel hesitated.

“A box of personal things. Letters, photographs, some papers that didn't make sense. I took them away because I thought they might help me understand what happened.”

“Where are those papers now?”

“I don't have them anymore.”

“What happened to them?”

“I gave them to someone I thought I could trust.”

“Who?”

“I don't know where he is now.”

I closed my eyes briefly.

“You keep asking us to trust you while refusing to tell us anything useful.”

“I'm trying to keep you safe.”

“From whom?”

“From people who won't hesitate to hurt someone if they believe the records can expose them.”

“Then tell us who they are.”

Daniel's voice broke.

“I don't know all their names.”

I asked him to come to Margaret's house and explain everything in person. He refused, saying that he could not risk being seen with us. I told him that if he continued withholding information, we would seek help from the authorities and let them determine whether the records mattered.

He did not object.

That worried me more than an argument would have.

When I ended the call, Margaret opened the wooden box again and removed a small photograph of Michael standing beside a metal locker. A number was painted on the locker door, though the image was blurred.

“Michael sent me this after he left the storage facility,” she said. “He told me to keep it with the envelope.”

I examined the picture.

The locker number was seventeen.

Sarah leaned over my shoulder.

“That's the same number as the key in Michael's note.”

Margaret nodded.

“Then the second copy may still be there.”

I placed the photograph beside the handwritten instructions.

For the first time, we had a concrete destination and a reason to believe the missing records had not been destroyed. But Daniel had already visited the storage unit once, and he claimed the papers had passed into someone else's hands.

We would need to discover whether he was telling the truth before the trail went cold again.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The Storage Unit Held More Than Old Papers, and What We Found There Made Daniel’s Silence Impossible to Excuse

Margaret kept the wooden box on the table between us.
