The words were plain enough, but their meaning depended on who had sent them and what they believed the second copy contained. Sarah stood beside me, her arms folded tightly across her chest, staring at the screen as though another sentence might appear.

“We're going to see Margaret,” she said.

“Yes.”

“And we're going to ask her about Emily.”

“Yes.”

She hesitated. “Even if she tells us to leave?”

“Especially if she tells us to leave. We need to understand why.”

Sarah nodded, but I could see that she was preparing herself for a meeting she had dreaded for decades. Margaret had once helped protect a child Sarah cared about, yet she had also participated in a decision that kept Sarah separated from that child. Neither woman could know what the other would say after so many years.

I spent the morning documenting what we had found. I copied the anonymous message into my notebook, recorded the time it arrived, and kept the original photograph locked away. I made no attempt to contact the unknown number. Whoever had sent the warning had offered no name and no reason to trust them.

Daniel called shortly before noon. He wanted to know whether we had received any more messages, and I told him about the threat. He became quiet.

“Don't show Margaret the photograph until she asks for it,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because she may recognize something you don't.”

“That sounds like a reason to show it to her, not hide it.”

Daniel sighed. “I'm trying to keep you from making the same mistakes we made.”

“Then tell me what those mistakes were.”

He promised to explain more after speaking with the estate lawyer. I reminded him that we had already heard that promise several times. He did not argue, but neither did he offer anything useful.

The following morning, Sarah and I drove toward the coast. The sky was overcast, and a fine mist drifted across the road whenever we passed through low ground. Sarah held the envelope containing the photocopied notes in her lap. The recent picture of Emily remained in my coat pocket, sealed inside a smaller envelope.

We stopped once for fuel and again at a roadside café where Sarah barely touched her tea. She kept looking at the envelope, smoothing its edges with her thumb.

“What if Margaret blames me?” she asked.

“She may.”

“And what if she's right?”

I turned toward her. “Then you'll listen to what she says. You don't have to agree with every accusation, but you can't ask for the truth and reject it because it hurts.”

She looked away, accepting the answer without speaking.

Margaret's house stood on a quiet street not far from the sea. It was a modest brick building with a narrow garden and a wooden bench beneath the front window. The paint on the gate had begun to peel, but the front steps were clean, and a pair of gardening gloves rested on the windowsill.

I rang the bell.

A woman appeared behind the glass. She was older than Ruth, with white hair pulled into a low knot and a face that looked severe until she opened the door. Then I saw something softer beneath the guarded expression: a weariness that seemed to have settled there over many years.

She looked directly at Sarah.

“You came.”

Sarah nodded. “Thank you for agreeing to see me.”

Margaret stepped aside, allowing us into a small sitting room. The curtains were open, and the room smelled faintly of furniture polish and fresh bread. Family photographs covered one wall, but none showed people Sarah recognized.

Margaret offered us tea. We declined, and she sat opposite us with her hands folded neatly in her lap.

“Before we discuss anything,” she said, “I need to know whether you brought the photograph.”

I exchanged a glance with Sarah.

“Yes,” I replied. “But we need to understand why you're asking.”

Margaret's eyes narrowed. “Because someone has been looking for it, and I want to know whether they found what they came for.”

I removed the recent photograph from my pocket and placed it on the table. Margaret leaned forward, examining the image without touching it.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she sat back.

“That is Emily.”

Sarah's breath caught. “You're certain?”

“I watched her grow from a frightened little girl into someone who could make her own decisions. I would recognize her anywhere.”

“Do you know where she lives?” I asked.

Margaret looked at me, then at Sarah.

“I know where she lived the last time I heard from her. That doesn't mean I know where she is now.”

“Who sent us this picture?”

“I don't know.”

“Then how can you be sure it isn't a trick?”

Margaret pointed to the young man standing beside Emily.

“Because I recognize him, too.”

I studied the image. “Who is he?”

“His name is Andrew. He worked with the family who raised Emily. He was younger than she was, and they were close for years.”

“Is he her brother?”

“Not by blood. But they grew up together.”

Sarah looked down at the picture. “Does Emily know about Michael?”

Margaret took a slow breath.

“She knows that her biological father died when she was young. She knows there were difficulties surrounding her placement. What she doesn't know is how many people made decisions about her without giving her a choice.”

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

“Did she ever ask about me?”

“Many times.”

The answer seemed to drain the strength from Sarah's shoulders.

“What did you tell her?”

“I told her you had helped care for her when she was ill. I told her you were part of her father's life. I did not tell her that you had wanted to remain involved, because I wasn't sure you had.”

Sarah looked up sharply.

“I did want to.”

“Then why didn't you come?”

“I was told it would be dangerous. Daniel said the people involved might use my visits to find Emily.”

Margaret's expression hardened.

“Daniel believed many things. Some were true. Others were convenient.”

I leaned forward. “What does that mean?”

Margaret stood and walked to the window. She remained there for a moment, looking toward the garden.

“After Michael died, Daniel became convinced that the missing records were the key to everything. He believed that if he found them, he could prove what Michael had discovered and expose the people responsible. But he began treating every person who disagreed with him as a threat.”

“Did he threaten you?” I asked.

“No. He pleaded with me, argued with me, and accused me of betraying Michael's memory. He wanted me to tell him where Emily had been placed and who was caring for her. I refused.”

“Because you thought he would use her to find the documents?”

“Because I thought he had forgotten that Emily was a child. She needed a home, stability, and people who loved her. She did not need to spend her life being used as a reason for adults to continue a fight.”

Margaret returned to her chair.

“I made mistakes, too. I believed silence would give Emily a chance at a normal life. I didn't understand how much she would later want to know about her past.”

Sarah's voice was barely audible. “Did you tell her about me?”

“I told her your name. I gave her the few letters you wrote after Michael died. I kept copies because I thought she might want them when she was older.”

Sarah stared at her.

“I wrote letters?”

“Several. You sent them to me, asking whether Emily was well and whether you could visit. You eventually stopped.”

Sarah looked as though she had been struck by something invisible.

“I never stopped because I wanted to.”

Margaret studied her face.

“Then someone must have told you that your letters were causing problems.”

Sarah slowly nodded.

“Daniel said the family caring for Emily was frightened. He said my letters could lead people to her.”

Margaret's expression grew grave.

“Some of them never reached me. I don't know what happened to those.”

I felt anger rise again. Another piece of the past had been distorted by someone who believed he was protecting everyone. Sarah had not been free to choose whether to remain in Emily's life because she had been making decisions based on information Daniel controlled.

“Do you still have the letters you received?” I asked.

Margaret nodded. “Most of them.”

“Would you let us see them?”

“Not today.”

“Why not?”

“Because the letters are not the only thing I kept.”

She stood and went to a small writing desk beside the bookcase. From a locked drawer, she removed a flat wooden box and placed it on the table.

Sarah stared at it.

Margaret opened the lid.

Inside were several bundles of letters tied with string, a few photographs, and a sealed envelope bearing Michael's handwriting.

I recognized the careful slant of the letters from the note we had found behind the photograph.

Margaret did not touch the envelope.

“This was left with me shortly before Michael died,” she said. “He told me not to open it unless someone came looking for the second copy.”

I leaned forward.

“Did he tell you what the second copy was?”

“No. He said it contained information that could endanger Emily if it fell into the wrong hands. He wanted me to keep the envelope separate from the records.”

“Then why didn't you tell Daniel?”

“Because Michael made me promise that I would not reveal anything to him unless I believed Daniel could be trusted to act in Emily's interests.”

Sarah looked from Margaret to the envelope.

“Do you believe he can?”

Margaret closed the box.

“I'm not sure anymore.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Michael’s Sealed Envelope Contained a Warning That Changed What We Thought We Knew About Daniel and the Missing Records

I read the anonymous message several times before putting my phone down.
