The photograph lay between us on the kitchen table, its glossy surface catching the light from the window. Emily looked confident and healthy, with an expression that suggested she had built a life far removed from the fear surrounding her childhood.

Sarah touched the edge of the picture.

“She looks happy,” she whispered.

“I hope she is.”

The young man beside Emily wore a dark jacket and held a folder beneath one arm. They appeared to be standing outside a university building, though I couldn't identify the institution from the photograph alone. There was no message on the front, no indication of who had taken it, and no explanation for why it had been left at our door.

I turned it over again. The handwriting was unfamiliar, but the words were unmistakable.

Emily Ellis.

“Someone wants us to know she's alive,” I said.

Sarah shook her head.

“Or someone wants us to believe this is her.”

I examined the picture more closely. The woman in the photograph bore a striking resemblance to the child in the old hospital picture. The shape of her eyes and the line of her jaw matched. Even the way she held her head reminded me of Sarah.

It would have been easy to accept the photograph as proof. But after the missing picture, the anonymous letter, and the disturbance at Michael's old house, I no longer trusted anything that arrived without an explanation.

I took the photograph to a nearby print shop and asked whether they could make a high-quality copy. I kept the original in a sealed envelope and wrote down the time we had found it. I also photographed the front and back with my phone.

When I returned, Sarah was waiting by the window.

“Have you told Daniel?” she asked.

“Not yet.”

“He deserves to know.”

“Perhaps. But I want to understand why someone left this here first.”

She looked down at the photograph.

“If it really is Emily, then someone has found her.”

“Or someone has always known where she was.”

That possibility frightened her. She sat down slowly, then began sorting the old photographs again, searching for any image that might show the same young man who appeared beside Emily.

We found nothing.

I called Ruth and told her about the photograph. She was quiet for a long time.

“Margaret will want to see it,” she said.

“Can you arrange that?”

“I can ask her. But she won't come here, and she won't speak on the telephone about anything connected to Michael.”

“Then we'll visit her.”

Ruth agreed to contact her sister and call us back.

Later that afternoon, Daniel arrived without warning. He stood at the front door in a dark coat, his face drawn and tired. When I opened the door, he glanced past me toward the living room.

“Have you found Emily?” he asked.

I did not invite him inside immediately.

“Why do you think that?”

“Because someone called me last night. They said Sarah had started asking questions again.”

“Who called you?”

“I don't know. The number was blocked.”

I studied his face. He looked genuinely worried, but I had learned not to confuse worry with innocence.

“Did you know someone had been searching Michael's old house?”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Yes.”

“When were you going to tell us?”

“I was trying to find out who it was.”

“You could have told us that someone might be looking for the records.”

“I thought you would stop.”

I stepped aside and let him enter.

Sarah came downstairs and froze when she saw him. Daniel looked at her for a long moment, then lowered his eyes.

“You shouldn't have gone back to the house,” he said.

“You shouldn't have spent years telling me what I could and couldn't know,” Sarah replied.

He accepted the rebuke without answering.

I placed the recent photograph on the table.

Daniel stared at it.

“Where did you get that?”

“It was left outside our door.”

He picked it up carefully, studying the woman's face. His expression grew more troubled with every second.

“Is it Emily?” Sarah asked.

“I think so.”

“You think so? You haven't seen her in decades.”

“I know her face.”

“Then tell us who the man is.”

Daniel looked at the young man beside Emily.

“I don't know.”

“Do you recognize the building?”

He turned the photograph toward the light.

“No. But I know someone who might.”

“Who?”

Daniel put the picture down.

“The lawyer who handled Michael's father's estate.”

I asked why the lawyer might recognize the building.

“Because Michael's father owned several properties near the university. One of them was transferred to a trust after Michael died. I never understood why.”

“Was Emily connected to that trust?”

“Not officially. At least, not in the papers I saw.”

I felt a fresh surge of anger.

“You keep giving us pieces of information after we discover something ourselves. Why didn't you tell us about the trust?”

“Because I never found evidence that it had anything to do with Emily.”

“Did it have anything to do with the missing records?”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Possibly.”

“Then stop deciding what is relevant. Tell us everything you remember.”

He sat down heavily.

“Michael believed his father had been moving property through several companies. He suspected some of the transactions were designed to hide who really owned the buildings. He began copying records because he thought the original papers might disappear.”

“And the second copy?”

“I never saw it. Michael told me he'd placed it somewhere safe, but he wouldn't say where. After he died, I searched the office and found nothing.”

“Did you know about the note hidden behind the photograph?”

“No.”

“Did you know someone had removed the photograph from our house?”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“No. But I feared something like that might happen.”

Sarah looked at him with disbelief.

“You knew there was a chance someone would come after the photographs, and you never warned us?”

“I thought the risk had passed.”

“You thought?”

He lowered his head.

“I was wrong.”

For the first time, Daniel seemed less interested in defending himself than in acknowledging what he had done. It did not erase his choices, but it made it easier to hear what came next.

He told us that Michael's father had died several years earlier, leaving behind a complicated estate. The lawyer who handled it was still practicing, though he was close to retirement. Daniel believed the lawyer might know who had received the trust property and whether any records had been preserved.

I asked for the lawyer's name.

Daniel gave it to me.

“Before you contact him,” he said, “there is something else you should know. Michael's father had a daughter from his first marriage. She was older than Michael, and she believed the estate should have belonged to her.”

“Did she have a reason to resent Emily?”

“She thought Emily was a complication. She believed Michael had made promises about the family property that he had no right to make.”

“Is she still alive?”

“Yes.”

Sarah stared at him.

“And you never thought to mention her?”

“I didn't think she mattered anymore.”

I gave him a cold look.

“That seems to be the family habit.”

He accepted that, too.

We agreed to contact the lawyer the following morning. Daniel offered to make the call, but I insisted that I would speak to him myself. I wanted an independent account, not another conversation filtered through someone who had spent decades keeping secrets.

After Daniel left, Sarah sat beside me and studied Emily's photograph again.

“Do you think she knows who I am?” she asked.

“I don't know.”

“Would she want to know?”

“There's only one way to find out.”

Sarah looked frightened by the possibility of an answer. She had spent so long worrying about whether Emily was safe that she had never allowed herself to consider what Emily might think of her.

I took her hand.

“If we find her, we won't demand anything. We won't tell her how she should feel. We'll give her the truth and let her decide what to do with it.”

Sarah nodded, though tears had begun to gather in her eyes.

That evening, Ruth called. Margaret had agreed to meet us in two days, but only if we came alone and left Daniel out of it.

“She wants to see Sarah,” Ruth explained. “And she wants to examine the recent photograph herself.”

I thanked her and wrote down the time.

Before bed, I placed the original photograph in a locked drawer with the anonymous letter and the handwritten note from Michael's office. I kept the copy on the table so we could examine it without risking the original.

As I turned off the light, my phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

It contained no greeting, no explanation, and no signature.

Only one sentence:

If you want Emily to remain safe, stop looking for the second copy.

I read it twice, then showed it to Sarah.

She sat very still.

For the first time, she did not ask me to stop investigating.

She simply said, “We need to find it before they do.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Margaret Agreed to Meet Us, but the First Thing She Asked Was Whether We Had Brought the Photograph Someone Wanted Destroyed

For several minutes, neither Sarah nor I spoke.
