Instead, she went quiet again, and the silence was more unsettling than any confession she had made so far. She stared at the photograph as though the young woman standing beside Daniel and Michael might turn toward her and speak.

“Tell me what you're thinking,” I said.

Sarah shook her head.

“Not until I'm sure.”

“Sure of what?”

“That the letter came from her.”

I sat down opposite my wife. “You just told me you don't know where Emily is. Now you're suggesting she sent this?”

“I said I don't know. That doesn't mean I haven't wondered whether she might try to contact me one day.”

“Why would she wait this long?”

“Because she was a child when I last saw her. She may not even remember me.”

I looked again at the hospital photograph. The little girl had a serious face, and her hand was wrapped around Sarah's fingers. I could not tell whether she was frightened or simply tired.

“Would she remember Daniel?”

“Perhaps. He spent more time with her than I did.”

“Then why would she contact you instead of him?”

Sarah's expression hardened. “Because Daniel was the one who made the final decision.”

“What decision?”

She stood so abruptly that her chair scraped across the floor.

“I can't do this in pieces anymore.”

“Then don't.”

She walked to the kitchen, returned with a glass of water, and sat down. Her hands were shaking now, and she held the glass with both palms to keep it steady.

“When Michael died, Emily was staying with a woman named Margaret,” she said. “Margaret had agreed to care for her while the adults tried to settle the legal questions. She was kind, patient, and much better equipped to look after a child than any of us were at the time.”

“Was she related to Michael?”

“No. She had worked with his mother years earlier. When the family became divided over Emily, Margaret was one of the few people willing to help without asking for anything in return.”

“What happened to her?”

“She moved away.”

“Because of the threats?”

Sarah nodded.

“Daniel helped arrange it. We believed it was the safest option. Margaret had no reason to stay in a town where people were watching her house and asking questions about a little girl who wasn't legally her responsibility.”

I studied Sarah's face. “You keep saying people were watching. Who were these people?”

“I never knew all their names. Some were connected to Michael's family. Others seemed to be friends of friends. There were phone calls, visits, warnings. At first, we thought they simply wanted Emily returned to her relatives. Later, Daniel became convinced they wanted something else.”

“What?”

Sarah hesitated.

“He believed Emily's existence threatened a family secret.”

I leaned forward.

“What kind of secret?”

“I don't know everything he suspected. He thought Michael had discovered something about the way his family handled money and property. There were documents that had disappeared after Michael's death, and some people seemed far more interested in finding them than in finding Emily.”

The explanation sounded like the beginning of another mystery, but I did not want a new mystery. I wanted the truth about the one already sitting between us.

“Did Emily have those documents?”

“Not as far as I know.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Did Daniel?”

Sarah looked away.

“I think he may have known where some of them were.”

I sat back and tried to fit the pieces together. Michael had died in an accident that Daniel suspected was suspicious. Emily had been moved from one caregiver to another. Documents had vanished, and people had threatened those who tried to help. Sarah had kept the photographs for decades, then received a letter from someone who knew the date of a private promise.

It was possible that the events were connected.

It was also possible that Sarah had spent so many years fearing the past that she now saw danger in every coincidence.

“Have you spoken to Daniel recently?” I asked.

“Not in several years.”

“Why?”

“Because we argued about Emily.”

“What did he want?”

“He wanted me to stop asking questions.”

“And you refused?”

“For a while. Then I became tired of fighting. I told him I wanted no further part in it.”

“Did he agree?”

“He said I could walk away if I wanted to, but I couldn't make the past disappear.”

Sarah looked down at her hands.

“He was right.”

I did not know what to say to that. I had been angry with her since the previous evening, but I was beginning to see the difference between anger and understanding. The longer she spoke, the more I realized that her secrecy had not been a single decision. It had become a habit, then a defense, then a wall she no longer knew how to take down.

That did not excuse what she had done.

It did make me wonder what she had been afraid of all those years.

I asked her for Daniel's telephone number.

She gave it to me without protest.

I called twice before he answered. His voice was older than I remembered from the few times we had spoken at family gatherings. It was rough and cautious, and he sounded as though he had been interrupted in the middle of something important.

“It's me,” I said, giving him my name.

There was a pause.

“I know who it is.”

“Sarah and I need to talk to you.”

“About what?”

“Emily.”

The silence that followed was so long that I checked whether the call had disconnected.

Finally, Daniel said, “Did she contact Sarah?”

“Someone sent a letter.”

“Then you should leave it alone.”

I felt my anger rise.

“You don't get to tell me what to do in my own marriage.”

“I'm not talking about your marriage.”

“Then tell me what you are talking about.”

Daniel exhaled sharply. “I'm talking about something that has been quiet for a long time. Sometimes quiet is the only thing keeping people safe.”

“Sarah has spent decades hiding photographs from me. Our granddaughter found them, became frightened, and called emergency services. That is what your quiet has accomplished.”

He said nothing.

“Did you hear me?”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me where this began.”

“I can't do that over the telephone.”

“Fine. Come to the house.”

“I won't.”

“Why?”

“Because if Sarah has received a letter, there may be someone else watching her. I won't walk into a place where I can be followed.”

I looked toward the window.

“You think someone is watching our house?”

“I think you should stop assuming the past is harmless.”

The call ended before I could respond.

I stared at my phone, then placed it on the table.

Sarah had been listening from the kitchen doorway. She looked pale.

“What did he say?”

“He won't come here.”

“Of course he won't.”

“You expected that?”

She nodded.

“Then why didn't you warn me?”

“Because I hoped he had changed.”

I rubbed my forehead. “Sarah, I need to know something. Did Daniel ever tell you that Emily was in danger because of you?”

Her eyes widened.

“No.”

“Did he blame you for Michael's death?”

“Not directly.”

“Did you blame yourself?”

She looked down.

“I blamed myself for not doing more. I blamed myself for leaving. I blamed myself for building a life with you while someone else's life remained unsettled.”

“Those are three different things.”

“I know.”

“Then stop treating them as though they're the same.”

Sarah pressed her lips together. She seemed to be considering my words, but I could not tell whether she accepted them.

Our granddaughter came downstairs a little before noon. She was wearing a yellow sweater and carrying a stuffed rabbit by one ear. She looked from me to Sarah and then at the photographs still spread across the table.

“Are you still talking about the picture?” she asked.

I moved the photographs into a stack.

“Yes, sweetheart. We're trying to understand it.”

“Are you angry with Grandma?”

The question caught me off guard.

“I'm upset because she kept something important from me,” I said carefully. “But that doesn't mean I don't love her.”

Our granddaughter considered this.

“When I hide something, Mommy says it gets bigger.”

Sarah looked away.

I knelt in front of the child. “Sometimes that's true. Secrets can become harder to explain the longer we keep them.”

“Then why do grown-ups have secrets?”

I glanced at Sarah, who was wiping her eyes with the back of her hand.

“Sometimes grown-ups make choices because they're frightened. They think keeping quiet will prevent someone from getting hurt. But they can make mistakes, too.”

“Is that what Grandma did?”

I did not want to lie to her.

“I think Grandma was trying to protect people. I also think she needs to explain why she did it.”

Our granddaughter nodded, although she did not look entirely satisfied.

Then she pointed to the photograph of Sarah and the two men.

“Who is the tall man?”

“His name was Michael,” Sarah said softly.

“Was he your friend?”

“Yes.”

“Why do you look sad in the picture?”

Sarah swallowed.

“Because I was worried about him.”

The child studied the photograph for another moment.

“Did he go away?”

Sarah's face changed.

“Yes,” she said. “He did.”

“Did he come back?”

“No.”

Our granddaughter seemed to accept that answer. She climbed onto the chair beside me and asked whether she could have a sandwich. I made her lunch, and for a while we returned to the ordinary business of eating and talking about school.

Yet the photographs remained on the table, and every time I glanced at them, I felt the same uneasiness.

After lunch, Sarah took our granddaughter upstairs to rest. I remained downstairs, examining the backs of the photographs again. One of them had a small tear near the bottom edge. I turned it toward the light and saw what looked like the corner of another sheet of paper caught beneath the backing.

The photograph had been mounted on a thin piece of cardboard. I carefully lifted the loose edge.

A narrow strip of paper was tucked behind it.

I pulled it free.

There were only two lines, written in faded ink.

If anything happens to me, ask Daniel about the second copy.

Below that was a date.

It was several weeks before Michael's death.

I sat motionless, holding the strip between my fingers.

The phrase second copy could have referred to anything. A letter, a photograph, a legal document, or a record of some kind. But Sarah had already mentioned missing documents, and Daniel had refused to discuss the past over the telephone.

I placed the strip beside the anonymous letter and called Sarah downstairs.

When she saw what I had found, she covered her mouth.

“I've never seen that before,” she said.

“Was it hidden there?”

“It must have been.”

“Did you know Michael had made a second copy of something?”

“No.”

I studied her expression. She looked genuinely shocked, but I had learned enough in the past day not to accept appearances as answers.

I picked up my phone and called Daniel again.

This time, he answered immediately.

“I found something in Michael's photograph,” I said. “A note about a second copy.”

Daniel did not speak.

“Tell me what it means.”

When he finally answered, his voice had changed.

“Where did you find that?”

“Behind a photograph.”

“Did Sarah see it?”

“Yes.”

He swore under his breath.

“What is the second copy, Daniel?”

“Listen carefully,” he said. “You need to put the photographs away and keep Sarah away from anyone who contacts her.”

“Why?”

“Because if that note has survived, then someone else may have kept the original.”

“Who?”

Daniel's answer came in a whisper.

“The person who was supposed to destroy it.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Daniel’s Warning Made Me Question Whether the Letter Was a Threat or an Invitation to Finish What Michael Had Started

I had expected Sarah to explain why the name Emily mattered.
