My attorney is reviewing the documents."

He sounded irritated.

"You're acting as though someone committed some terrible offense."

"I haven't decided what happened."

"Then why involve all these people?"

"Because the paperwork involves my identity."

He started talking quickly.

He said Valerie was distressed.

He said the marriage was already under pressure.

He said Susan thought I had become unreasonable.

I listened.

There was a time when those statements would have been enough.

Valerie was upset.

Therefore, I needed to stop.

Susan disapproved.

Therefore, I needed to apologize.

Brandon was angry.

Therefore, I needed to explain myself until he felt better.

I didn't want to follow that pattern again.

"Do you know who signed the renewal?" I asked.

There was a pause.

"Why are you asking me?"

"Because your name appears as a submission contact in the records."

The line went quiet.

I could hear my own breathing.

I hadn't intended to sound accusatory.

But I knew the information mattered.

Brandon spoke more slowly.

"That doesn't mean I signed anything."

"I know."

He sounded surprised.

"What?"

"I know it doesn't establish who signed."

He didn't answer.

"I haven't accused you of writing my name."

"Then what's the problem?"

"The problem is that somebody did."

Another silence.

I let it remain.

I wasn't going to fill it with excuses.

Eventually, Brandon said he had helped handle paperwork connected with the renewal.

My hand tightened around the phone.

It was the first direct acknowledgment I'd heard from him that he'd been involved.

I tried to remain calm.

"What did you handle?"

"Administrative things."

"Such as?"

"Getting documents together."

I looked at the kitchen table.

"Did you include the copy of my driver's license?"

He hesitated.

"I don't remember every attachment."

I closed my eyes.

That wasn't an answer.

But I didn't accuse him of lying.

I knew people genuinely forgot details.

I also knew that forgetting wasn't an explanation for a document carrying someone else's signature.

"Then the records should help us establish what was submitted," I said.

He grew impatient again.

"You're making this sound like an investigation."

"It is an examination of paperwork I didn't authorize."

"You're tearing the family apart."

The words hurt.

I was tired of hearing them.

I wondered whether Brandon understood what it felt like to be told that protecting your own identity was an attack on the people you loved.

For a moment, I wanted to tell him everything.

How often I'd stayed quiet.

How many times Susan had humiliated me.

How much I'd wanted to attend Valerie's wedding.

How frightened I'd been when I found the license copy.

But none of those things would answer the question.

So I said something simpler.

"If the paperwork was prepared properly, the records should help establish that."

He didn't respond.

"And if it wasn't, I need to know."

Brandon told me I was being stubborn.

I didn't argue about the word.

He said Valerie would never forgive me if I continued.

That stopped me.

I felt a familiar ache beneath my ribs.

Losing Valerie was the fear I'd carried through every difficult conversation.

It was why I'd tolerated so much.

Why I'd apologized when I wasn't wrong.

Why I'd allowed Brandon and Susan to treat me as though my opinions mattered less than theirs.

I had spent years trying to protect my relationship with my daughter by never asking her to choose between her comfort and my dignity.

Now Brandon was using that fear directly.

I took a breath.

"Valerie and I will decide what our relationship looks like."

He was silent.

"I love her. That hasn't changed."

"Then act like it."

The words landed harder than I expected.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I remembered Valerie sitting at my table.

Her hands around the coffee cup.

Her eyes filling with tears.

Her voice when she said she didn't want to lose me.

I had comforted her.

I had listened.

And I had told her the truth.

That was love.

It might not have been the kind Brandon wanted from me.

But it was still love.

"I am acting like her mother," I said.

He gave another impatient sigh.

I continued.

"And I'm also acting like someone whose signature was used without permission."

Brandon said he didn't have time to argue.

I told him I wasn't asking him to argue.

I was asking for the documents to be explained.

He said he would speak to Valerie.

I didn't object.

Then he ended the call.

I stood beside the counter for several minutes.

The plate was still wet.

The towel hung from my hand.

I looked down and realized I had been gripping it tightly.

I set it aside.

Then I sat at the table.

My heart was beating hard.

I didn't feel triumphant.

I felt frightened.

Brandon had acknowledged helping with paperwork connected to the renewal.

He hadn't explained the signature.

He hadn't confirmed who supplied my identification.

And he'd warned that Valerie might never forgive me.

I wondered whether he believed that.

Perhaps he did.

Perhaps he was frightened of what the records might show.

Perhaps he simply hated losing control of the conversation.

I couldn't know.

I opened my notebook.

I wrote down what he'd said as accurately as I could remember.

He acknowledged helping gather documents.

He did not identify the signer.

He said he couldn't remember every attachment.

He asked me to stop pursuing records.

I read the notes.

Then I called my attorney.

She listened carefully.

"Did he tell you he signed the document?"

"No."

"Did he confirm that he supplied your identification?"

"No."

"Did he say anything specific about how the renewal was submitted?"

"Only that he helped gather documents."

She asked me to send her my notes.

I agreed.

Then she reminded me not to draw conclusions beyond what the conversation established.

I told her I understood.

But I asked another question.

"Why would he want me to stop if he hadn't done anything wrong?"

My attorney paused.

"We can't establish his reason from the call alone."

I looked down.

I knew she was right.

I simply wished she had an easier answer.

After we ended the call, I sat quietly.

I wanted to call Valerie.

I wanted to ask whether Brandon had told her about our conversation.

I wanted to know what he planned to say.

Then I stopped myself.

I wasn't going to race him to my daughter.

I wasn't going to turn her marriage into a contest over whom she believed first.

I had promised to listen.

I wanted to keep that promise.

If Valerie called, I would speak honestly.

But I wouldn't demand that she choose sides before the facts were established.

That afternoon, I received a message from her.

"Brandon says you accused him."

I stared at the screen.

My chest tightened.

I knew how easily that sentence could become another argument.

I typed slowly.

"I told him his name appears as a contact in the records. I also told him that does not prove he signed anything."

I read it twice.

Then I sent it.

Valerie replied after several minutes.

"He says you don't believe him."

I looked at the phone.

I didn't want to spend the afternoon defending my feelings.

I wanted the facts.

I wrote:

"I don't know who signed the document. I'm asking for evidence so we can find out."

She didn't answer immediately.

I placed the phone down.

I made myself leave it alone.

A little later, she called.

I answered.

"Mom?"

"I'm here."

She sounded tired.

"I don't know what to believe."

I closed my eyes.

"I understand."

"Everyone keeps telling me different things."

I thought about that.

Then I said, "You don't have to decide based only on what someone tells you."

"What do you mean?"

"We're requesting the records. Let's see what they show."

She was quiet.

I waited.

Finally, she said, "Okay."

It wasn't a promise to agree with me.

It wasn't a declaration that Brandon had done anything wrong.

It was simply an agreement to wait for evidence.

I could accept that.

When the call ended, I looked at the red folder.

I thought about Brandon's warning.

Valerie might never forgive me.

I couldn't control that.

I could only control whether I continued acting honestly.

And I knew I hadn't done anything wrong by asking who had written my name.

I put the folder away.

Then I finished drying the dishes.

The ordinary work steadied me.

I didn't know what the next records would reveal.

But I knew I wouldn't let fear of Brandon's reaction decide whether I looked at them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: The Additional Records Showed Who Had Submitted My Identification, but I Still Needed to Hear Why My Name Had Been Used

Brandon called the next morning.
