I said.

Her eyes filled with tears.

I reached across the table.

This time, I did take her hand.

I didn't need to withhold comfort simply because the paperwork was serious.

She was still my daughter.

I still loved her.

That hadn't changed.

"Mom, I don't want to lose you."

I swallowed.

"I'm here."

"But everything feels different."

"It is different."

She looked at me.

I kept holding her hand.

"I don't want us to keep hurting each other," I said. "But I can't go back to pretending things are fine when they're not."

She wiped her cheek.

"I know."

I wasn't sure she did.

Not completely.

But she was listening.

And I wanted to give her room to understand.

We sat quietly.

Then she asked whether I thought her marriage would survive.

I didn't know how to answer.

I wasn't her marriage counselor.

I didn't know everything between her and Brandon.

And I didn't know who had prepared the disputed paperwork.

"I can't tell you that," I said.

She looked disappointed.

I understood why.

When she was little, I had often been able to answer the questions that frightened her.

Would she be all right?

Could I help?

Would tomorrow be better?

I had tried to make the world feel safe.

Now she was asking something I couldn't know.

I wanted to be honest.

"Your marriage is between you and Brandon," I said. "I can't decide what happens to it."

She nodded.

"But the paperwork—"

"The paperwork needs an explanation."

She looked away.

I continued gently.

"I won't blame anyone without evidence. But I can't promise to hide what we learn."

She turned back toward me.

"Even if it hurts the family?"

I thought about that question for a long moment.

It was the same argument I'd heard from Brandon and Susan.

But coming from Valerie, it sounded different.

She wasn't criticizing my clothes.

She wasn't dismissing my house.

She was frightened.

I could see that.

Still, the answer couldn't change.

"Valerie, if somebody used my identity without permission, we have to deal with that."

She lowered her eyes.

"I know."

"I don't want anyone punished for something they didn't do."

She nodded.

"And I don't want to ignore something serious just because we're related."

A tear slipped down her cheek.

I handed her a tissue.

She wiped her face.

For several minutes, we talked about things that had nothing to do with the lease.

She asked whether I'd been eating properly.

I almost laughed.

It was such a simple question.

So ordinary.

And it touched me more than I expected.

"Yes," I said. "I've been eating."

"Sleeping?"

"Not very well."

"Me neither."

I looked at her.

I could see how tired she was.

I wanted to tell her to stay.

To rest.

To let me make dinner.

But I didn't want to use the visit as a way to make her dependent on me again.

I wanted us to find a healthier way to care for each other.

So I asked whether she wanted something to eat.

She said she wasn't hungry.

I accepted that.

We finished our coffee.

The cups remained on the table.

For once, neither of us rushed to end the silence.

I was beginning to understand how much of our relationship had been built around avoiding uncomfortable moments.

Whenever Valerie was unhappy, I tried to fix it.

Whenever I was hurt, I tried to hide it.

We rarely stayed with a difficult truth long enough to understand it.

That afternoon, we did.

Not perfectly.

Not without tears.

But we did.

Before she left, Valerie stood beside the kitchen table.

She looked at the red folder.

"Will you tell me when you find out more?"

I considered the question.

"I'll tell you what I can, when it's appropriate."

She nodded.

"And you'll let me explain if I know something?"

"Of course."

She looked at me.

"I mean it, Mom."

"So do I."

I wanted her to understand that.

I wasn't trying to trap her.

I wasn't preparing to accuse her the moment she spoke.

I wanted the truth.

If she knew something, I would listen.

If she didn't, I wouldn't demand that she invent an explanation.

She hugged me before leaving.

I held her longer than I'd expected.

For a moment, I remembered the girl who used to run toward me when something frightened her.

Then she stepped back.

She wiped her eyes.

"I love you."

"I love you too."

She went home.

I closed the door.

Then I returned to the kitchen.

The two coffee cups were still on the table.

One was nearly empty.

The other held a little coffee that had gone cold.

I picked them up.

I washed them.

I put them away.

Then I sat down with the folder.

The papers hadn't changed.

The signature still wasn't mine.

The license photocopy still needed explaining.

The complete records hadn't arrived.

I was still afraid of what they might reveal.

But something about the afternoon felt different.

Valerie had asked questions.

She had listened when I answered.

She had admitted she was frightened.

And I had been able to comfort her without promising to abandon my own concerns.

That mattered to me.

I didn't know whether it would last.

I didn't know how she'd respond if the records implicated someone she loved.

I didn't know how I would respond either.

But I knew what I'd told her.

I would listen.

I would be fair.

And I would not promise to protect anyone from facts we hadn't yet established.

I placed the lease renewal back in the folder.

The driver's license photocopy went behind it.

I closed the cover.

My attorney was still pursuing the missing records.

Until they arrived, I couldn't know the full explanation.

For once, I was willing to leave it there.

I had loved Valerie for thirty years.

I still did.

And that afternoon, I began to understand that loving her honestly might require something harder than making every problem disappear.

It might require allowing both of us to face the truth.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: The Complete Lease Records Arrived, and One Missing Answer Became More Important Than Everything Brandon Had Said

Valerie came to see me after our last conversation.
