That's progress."

I wanted to believe her.

But I was tired of uncertainty.

I told her so.

"I understand," she said. "We shouldn't confuse a partial response with a final answer."

I wrote that down.

A partial response.

Not a final answer.

She explained that we needed to review the complete submission history and any available verification records.

I listened carefully.

Some of the details were unfamiliar.

I asked her to repeat them.

She did.

Without irritation.

Without making me feel foolish.

That was something I was beginning to notice more often.

How different it felt when someone answered my questions without treating them as an inconvenience.

Brandon had often made me feel embarrassed for asking him to explain things.

Susan had done the same.

My attorney simply explained what she knew and told me when she didn't know something.

I appreciated that more than I could say.

I asked whether the response suggested the signature had been accepted as mine.

She explained that the paperwork appeared in the records, but its presence alone didn't prove that I had authorized it.

I let out a breath.

That distinction mattered.

Someone could put my name on a document.

Someone could include a copy of my identification.

Someone could process paperwork.

But none of those actions changed the fact that I hadn't given my consent.

I hadn't signed.

I hadn't knowingly supplied the license for that purpose.

And I hadn't agreed to whatever responsibility the document was intended to create.

I wanted those facts kept clear.

My attorney agreed.

She said the next request would focus on the missing records.

I asked whether Brandon needed to be contacted again.

"That depends on what we can obtain from the people responsible for maintaining the file."

I nodded.

I didn't want another circular conversation.

I didn't want to hear that everyone was under stress.

I didn't want Susan telling me I was humiliating the family.

I wanted something more useful.

A record.

An explanation.

A way to determine what had happened.

When the call ended, I retrieved the folder.

I placed it on the kitchen table beside my notebook.

Then I sat down.

I looked at the photocopy of my driver's license.

For the first time, I considered it less as a frightening discovery and more as a piece of evidence.

It was still my photograph.

Still my personal information.

But now I had a clearer understanding of the question it raised.

Not simply who possessed a copy.

Who had submitted it with the lease renewal?

And for what purpose?

I wrote that down.

Then I looked at the signature.

Who had written it?

Had anyone verified that it was mine?

What had been done after the document was received?

I wrote those questions, too.

I wasn't sure which records would answer them.

That was why I had an attorney.

I could ask the questions.

She could help determine how to pursue the answers.

It seemed simple.

Yet it represented a change in how I approached problems.

For years, I had felt responsible for managing everything.

If Valerie needed something, I tried to provide it.

If she was upset, I tried to comfort her.

If Brandon was dismissive, I tried to find a way to make the conversation pleasant.

If Susan criticized me, I tried to avoid giving her another reason.

I had become so accustomed to carrying those responsibilities that asking for help felt unfamiliar.

Now I was allowing someone else to assist me with a serious matter.

And I wasn't apologizing for it.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Valerie.

"Have you heard anything?"

I read it twice.

I wondered whether Brandon had asked her to find out.

Then I stopped myself.

I had no evidence of that.

Valerie could simply be concerned.

I didn't need to turn every question into a suspicion.

I replied that my attorney had received a partial response and was requesting additional records.

Valerie answered quickly.

"Does that mean it's almost finished?"

I looked at the folder.

"No. We still don't know who signed."

Several minutes passed.

Then she called.

I answered.

"Hi, Mom."

"Hi."

"Why is this taking so long?"

"Because the information we have doesn't answer the questions yet."

She sighed.

"I just want things to go back to normal."

I looked around the kitchen.

The same table.

The same cabinets.

The same window.

Everything was familiar.

But I wasn't sure what normal meant anymore.

"Valerie, what do you mean by normal?"

She hesitated.

"You know. Before all this."

I thought about the wedding.

The remarks.

The calls.

The years when I had accepted things without complaint.

I wasn't certain I wanted to return to every part of that arrangement.

"I want us to have a peaceful relationship," I said.

"Then why can't we just stop?"

I looked at the license photocopy.

"Because I still don't know how my identity was used."

She didn't respond.

I kept my voice calm.

"Imagine finding your signature on paperwork you hadn't signed."

"Mom—"

"Imagine finding your driver's license attached to it."

She went quiet.

"Would you want to know who had done that?"

A longer silence.

Then she said, "Yes."

I felt my throat tighten.

It was such a small answer.

But it was the first time she'd responded directly to that question without immediately bringing up the wedding or Brandon.

"That's what I'm trying to do," I said.

"I know."

I wasn't sure whether she fully understood.

But I believed she was listening.

She asked whether I thought Brandon was responsible.

I told her the truth.

"I don't know."

"Then why does everyone act like you're accusing him?"

"I can't control what everyone thinks."

She sighed.

"I just don't want my marriage damaged."

I looked down.

"I don't want that either."

"Then please be careful."

"I am being careful."

I meant it.

I hadn't accused Brandon.

I hadn't blamed Susan.

I hadn't declared that Valerie had signed my name.

I was asking for records precisely because I didn't want to rely on suspicion.

I explained that to her.

She listened.

Then she said something that surprised me.

"I wish you'd told me all this before."

I wasn't sure what she meant.

"Before what?"

"Before you got so upset."

I considered correcting her.

I wanted to say I hadn't become upset without reason.

But I understood that she might be talking about how we'd communicated.

Maybe she hadn't recognized how frightened I was.

Maybe I'd spoken too carefully.

Maybe she'd heard only my frustration.

"I wish we'd talked differently, too," I said.

It wasn't an apology for the investigation.

It was an acknowledgment that we had struggled to understand each other.

Valerie seemed to accept that.

We spoke a little longer.

She didn't ask me to withdraw the records request again.

I didn't ask her to take sides.

When we ended the call, I sat with the phone in my hand.

I felt sad.

I also felt hopeful.

Not because Valerie had suddenly agreed with me about everything.

But because she'd answered a question honestly.

She had admitted she would want answers if the same thing happened to her.

That mattered.

I put the phone down.

Then I returned the documents to the folder.

The partial response hadn't solved the mystery.

But it had made the next steps clearer.

There were records still to obtain.

Questions still to investigate.

And people whose involvement had not yet been established.

I wasn't going to rush toward an accusation.

I wasn't going to rush toward forgiveness either.

Neither would be fair without knowing what had happened.

I looked at the clock.

There was still plenty of afternoon left.

For once, I didn't spend it calling people.

I went outside for a short walk.

The air felt different from the stillness of the kitchen.

I passed houses.

Cars.

People going about their ordinary lives.

I wondered how many families had difficult conversations they never quite resolved.

How many mothers swallowed hurt because they thought it would protect their children.

How many people accepted explanations they didn't believe because they were tired of arguing.

I didn't know.

I only knew what I was beginning to learn.

An honest question deserved an honest answer.

And wanting that answer didn't make me cruel.

When I returned home, I put my keys on the counter.

I looked toward the folder.

I left it where it was.

The records request would continue.

I didn't need to spend the entire evening waiting beside the phone.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Told Valerie I Would Listen to Any Honest Explanation, but I Could No Longer Promise to Protect Everyone From Its Consequences

My attorney contacted me after the first response to our records request arrived.
