We didn't resolve it."

She told me the family needed to move forward.

She said Valerie was upset.

She said Brandon was trying to begin his marriage without constant interference.

I listened.

I had heard these arguments before.

Only the order was different.

When she paused, I asked whether she knew who had signed the lease renewal.

"That's not the point."

"It is the point I'm asking about."

She sighed.

"You always make everything so literal."

I looked at the counter.

The words stung.

Not because they were especially cruel.

Because they were familiar.

Susan had a way of making a reasonable question sound like a personal weakness.

If I asked her to explain a remark, I was too sensitive.

If I disagreed, I was being difficult.

If I wanted a direct answer, I was taking things too literally.

There was always something wrong with how I responded.

Rarely anything wrong with what had been said.

I felt myself preparing to apologize.

Then I stopped.

"I need to know how my signature appeared on that document."

Susan spoke sharply.

"You've made that very clear."

"Has anyone explained it?"

She didn't answer.

I waited.

The silence felt uncomfortable.

I could almost hear my old self trying to fill it.

Maybe it was an accident.

Maybe somebody made a mistake.

Maybe the paperwork was confusing.

I didn't say any of those things.

After several seconds, Susan spoke again.

She said people were becoming embarrassed by the situation.

I looked toward the window.

"Embarrassed by what?"

"By the way you're handling this."

I thought about the request my attorney was preparing.

I thought about the lease renewal.

The license photocopy.

The unexplained signature.

"What would you prefer I do?"

"Talk to your family."

"I have."

"Without lawyers."

"I've also done that."

She was silent.

I continued.

"I asked about the signature before my attorney became involved. Nobody explained it."

Susan said I was being stubborn.

I could feel anger rising.

I didn't want to shout.

I didn't want to insult her.

But I was tired of being told that my refusal to ignore a problem was the problem itself.

"Susan, I haven't accused you of signing anything."

"Then why are you treating us this way?"

"What way?"

"Like we're strangers you can't trust."

I thought about that.

There was something sad in her words.

Not because I agreed with her interpretation.

Because I remembered how often family loyalty had been used to end conversations that needed to continue.

"Being family doesn't mean I can accept a signature I didn't make."

She didn't respond.

I could hear movement on her end of the call.

Then she said I was making everyone miserable.

I looked at the table.

I thought about all the times I'd allowed that argument to settle things.

Someone was upset.

Someone was uncomfortable.

Someone didn't want to talk.

And I would apologize.

I would promise to be more understanding.

I would stop asking.

That had kept the peace temporarily.

But it hadn't made me feel respected.

It hadn't helped me understand why Valerie had excluded me from the wedding.

And it certainly hadn't explained the lease renewal.

"I'm sorry everyone is upset," I said.

Susan started to respond.

I continued.

"But I won't withdraw the questions."

Her voice hardened.

"Then I don't know what you expect from us."

"I expect an honest explanation if you have one."

"I've told you—"

"You've told me what you think about my decision. You haven't told me who signed my name."

She went quiet.

I noticed my hands were steady.

That surprised me.

Only a few days earlier, a conversation like this would have left me trembling.

I would have worried about every sentence.

Whether I'd sounded ungrateful.

Whether I'd offended Susan.

Whether Valerie would hear about the call and decide I was causing trouble.

Those worries were still there.

They simply weren't controlling my words.

Susan eventually said she hoped I understood the damage I was doing.

I didn't argue.

I didn't agree.

I told her I would continue working with my attorney until the paperwork was explained.

Then I ended the call.

I placed the phone on the table.

The kitchen was quiet.

I waited for the familiar flood of guilt.

It came.

Of course it did.

I wondered whether I'd been too firm.

Whether I'd sounded cold.

Whether I should call back and make things easier.

Then I remembered what had actually happened.

I had asked about the document.

Susan had criticized me.

I had repeated the question.

She hadn't answered it.

That was all.

I hadn't threatened her.

I hadn't accused her of wrongdoing.

I hadn't insulted her house or her work or her clothes.

I had simply refused to abandon the conversation.

I sat down.

For several minutes, I thought about Susan's use of the word family.

It was strange.

She had never seemed especially concerned about my comfort when she visited my home.

She had criticized ordinary parts of my life as though they were beneath her.

My job.

My clothes.

The rooms I'd spent years maintaining.

Yet now she expected me to place family harmony above my right to understand the use of my identity.

I couldn't make sense of that.

Then I realized I didn't need to.

I didn't have to prove Susan was inconsistent.

I didn't have to make her admit she'd been unkind.

Those were separate matters.

My attorney needed records.

I needed answers.

And Susan's opinion about my personality wasn't evidence.

I opened my notebook.

I wrote down the date and what I remembered from the call.

I tried to be accurate.

Susan had criticized my decision to involve an attorney.

She had said the family was embarrassed.

She had not identified the person who signed the lease renewal.

She had not explained the license photocopy.

I stopped writing.

I read it again.

There was no need to add that she'd made me angry.

No need to describe how she'd spoken about my house in the past.

The call could be documented without turning it into a record of every grievance I'd ever had.

I called my attorney and told her about the conversation.

She listened.

"Did Susan provide any new information about the paperwork?"

"No."

"Did she say she'd personally handled any part of it?"

"No."

"Then we'll continue with the records."

I nodded.

I was beginning to understand how she kept complicated situations from becoming endless arguments.

She asked what mattered.

She separated facts from opinions.

She didn't let an unpleasant conversation become larger than it was.

I wanted to learn that.

After the call, I went into the living room.

I looked around.

The furniture was ordinary.

Nothing expensive.

Nothing chosen to impress visitors.

I had bought what I could afford.

I'd kept things clean.

I'd repaired things when they broke.

I'd built a home while raising Valerie alone.

It had taken effort.

I had often been tired.

There were times when I worried about money.

Times when I wondered whether I was doing enough for my daughter.

But the house had been ours.

I remembered Valerie sitting at the kitchen table when she was younger.

Her books spread in front of her.

A glass of water near her elbow.

The ordinary evenings when we talked about her day.

Those memories mattered more to me than Susan's opinion.

I didn't need to defend my home to her anymore.

I didn't need her approval to feel that I had built something worthwhile.

That realization made me unexpectedly sad.

I wondered how many years I'd spent trying to be acceptable to people who had already decided to criticize me.

I couldn't change those years.

But I could stop carrying their opinions into every new decision.

My phone lit up.

Valerie had sent a message.

She asked whether Susan had called.

I looked at the screen.

For a moment, I considered ignoring it.

Then I decided to answer simply.

"Yes. We talked about the paperwork."

Valerie replied a few minutes later.

"She's upset."

I sat down.

I wanted to ask whether Valerie knew how upset I was.

Whether she understood what it felt like to be pressured by several people while trying to establish that my signature wasn't genuine.

Instead, I wrote:

"I understand she's upset. I'm still asking for the records."

I read it before sending.

It was true.

It wasn't unkind.

I sent it.

Valerie didn't answer immediately.

I didn't send another message.

I remembered the previous days.

How often I'd tried to control everyone else's reaction.

How much energy I'd spent worrying about whether I was being a good mother.

I didn't want to do that anymore.

I could care about Valerie.

I could care that Susan was upset.

I could even hope Brandon wasn't responsible for what had happened.

But none of those feelings required me to ignore the documents.

That evening, I made a simple dinner.

I ate without turning on the television.

The house was quiet.

I thought about the word privacy.

Brandon wanted privacy.

Susan wanted privacy.

They kept talking about protecting the family.

I understood why people sometimes wanted personal matters handled discreetly.

I valued privacy myself.

But privacy didn't mean refusing to answer questions.

It didn't mean asking someone to accept a disputed signature.

And it didn't mean treating independent advice as betrayal.

I washed my plate.

I dried it.

Then I put it away.

I didn't know whether Susan would ever understand my decision.

I didn't know whether she would continue criticizing me.

But I no longer believed I had to win her approval before taking the next step.

My attorney was pursuing the records.

That was what mattered.

I went to bed without calling Susan back.

For once, I allowed an uncomfortable conversation to remain uncomfortable.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: The First Response About the Lease Renewal Did Not Identify the Person Who Signed, but It Showed Why the Supporting Records Mattered

Susan called the following afternoon.
