8 – The Red Folder Stayed on My Kitchen Table as I Made the Hardest Decision of My Thirty Years as a Mother

I had made promises to Valerie all her life.

Some were spoken.

Others were simply understood.

I would help when I could.

I would listen when something troubled her.

I would try to be someone she could turn to.

Those promises had shaped the way I lived.

They had also shaped the way I let people treat me.

I was beginning to see that.

The red folder sat in front of me.

The coffee cup was beside it.

I hadn't moved either very far.

I kept returning to the same place because I couldn't stop thinking about what the documents meant.

It wasn't only the signature.

It wasn't only the license.

It was the possibility that people I trusted had assumed I would never challenge them.

I didn't know whether that was true.

I couldn't prove anyone's intentions.

But I knew how I'd behaved in the past.

I had made myself easy to persuade.

A little pressure from Valerie.

A dismissive comment from Brandon.

A cutting remark from Susan.

Often that was enough to make me retreat.

I had called it choosing my battles.

Sometimes that was exactly what it was.

Not every unpleasant comment deserved an argument.

Not every family disagreement needed to become a confrontation.

But I had taken that reasonable idea too far.

I had used it to avoid almost anything that might upset someone else.

And now I was facing something I couldn't responsibly ignore.

I looked at my name on the lease renewal.

The writing was supposed to represent my agreement.

That was what a signature meant.

Someone had placed it there without my consent.

I felt a quiet sense of violation.

I didn't need to make the feeling dramatic.

I simply knew that a part of my identity had been used in a way I hadn't chosen.

Then there was the photocopy.

My driver's license.

My photograph.

My personal information.

It wasn't a sentimental object.

It wasn't a family keepsake.

It was identification.

And somebody had included it in paperwork connected to that disputed signature.

I couldn't explain why.

That was the central problem.

I still didn't have an answer.

I thought about how quickly the phone conversation had changed once I said an attorney would be present.

Before that, I had been told to stop making trouble over a wedding.

Afterward, the discussion had lost its easy confidence.

Brandon had asked me not to bring lawyers into the matter.

Valerie had wanted to postpone the conversation.

I had agreed to the next day.

Ten o'clock.

I kept coming back to the time.

It was a small thing to hold on to.

A definite appointment.

A point beyond which I would no longer be sitting alone with questions and allowing my imagination to answer them.

I wanted to reach that conversation without deciding everyone was guilty.

That mattered.

I wasn't interested in punishing Brandon merely because he had been disrespectful.

I wasn't interested in embarrassing Susan because she'd made cruel comments.

And I wasn't going to accuse Valerie just because she'd hurt me by excluding me from her wedding.

The documents deserved a separate examination.

That was the only fair way to approach them.

But I also couldn't let my desire to be fair become another excuse for ignoring what was in front of me.

I had to hold both ideas at once.

Don't accuse without evidence.

Don't dismiss the evidence you have.

It sounded simple when I put it that way.

It wasn't easy.

Because every time I thought about the possibility of wrongdoing, I pictured Valerie.

My daughter.

The child I had raised alone.

The person whose happiness had influenced so many of my decisions.

I knew I hadn't always been a perfect mother.

I had made mistakes.

I had probably given in too often when she was younger.

I had sometimes mistaken solving a problem for teaching her how to solve it herself.

But I had loved her without reservation.

I didn't doubt that.

And I still did.

What I doubted was whether she understood that my love had limits when it came to my consent.

I didn't mean limits on caring for her.

I meant limits on what I would allow her to do in my name.

That distinction was important.

I could forgive hurt feelings.

I could accept decisions I disliked.

I could continue loving a daughter who hadn't invited me to her wedding.

But I couldn't agree that a forged signature should be ignored because discussing it made her uncomfortable.

That wasn't love.

It was surrender.

I looked down at the folder.

I wondered how Valerie would react if I said that aloud.

Would she understand?

Would she think I was threatening her marriage?

Would she say I had changed?

Perhaps I had.

I didn't feel like the woman I had been when the call began.

Then, I had still been trying to find the gentlest way to ask a serious question.

Now I understood that the question didn't become unkind merely because someone disliked hearing it.

I remembered the woman's accusation.

She had suggested I was allowing my disappointment to control me.

There was a part of that accusation I wanted to examine.

I was disappointed about the wedding.

Deeply.

I had wanted to attend.

I had wanted to see Valerie make that commitment.

I had wanted to be present for an important moment in her life.

I wasn't.

And nothing could change that now.

Even a sincere apology wouldn't give me back the day.

I would have to live with that sadness.

But sadness didn't make me incapable of recognizing my own signature.

It didn't invent the driver's license photocopy.

It didn't create the lease renewal.

Those things existed independently of my feelings.

I took the pages out again.

I laid them flat.

The paper made a faint sound against the table.

I examined the signature carefully.

Then I looked at the license.

I let the facts remain simple.

I hadn't signed.

I hadn't knowingly authorized the use of the identification for this paperwork.

I had asked for an explanation.

I hadn't received one.

That was where things stood.

I didn't need to imagine the entire future.

I didn't need to decide whether I would ever trust Brandon again.

I didn't need to decide how my relationship with Valerie would look months from now.

I had spent much of my life trying to manage the consequences of other people's choices before those choices had even been explained.

I could stop.

I could take one question at a time.

One answer at a time.

That was enough.

I placed the papers back in the folder.

I was careful to keep the license copy with the lease renewal.

That arrangement had been the detail I'd overlooked at first.

I didn't want to overlook it again.

The connection between those pages mattered.

I couldn't say exactly what it proved.

But I knew it required an explanation.

I closed the folder.

Then I looked at my coffee.

The surface was still.

I thought about making another cup.

I didn't.

I remained seated.

For a while, I let myself feel everything I had been trying to control.

The hurt about the wedding.

The embarrassment of Susan's remarks.

The anger I'd swallowed when Brandon spoke down to me.

The sadness of realizing how uncertain I felt about Valerie's honesty.

They weren't pleasant feelings.

I didn't enjoy admitting them.

But they belonged to me.

And I didn't have to apologize for having them.

I thought about what I would say if Valerie asked whether I still loved her.

The answer was easy.

Yes.

Of course I did.

That wasn't the problem.

I loved her yesterday.

I loved her when she excluded me from the wedding.

I loved her during the phone call.

And I would love her when we spoke tomorrow.

But if she asked me to forget about the signature, the answer would be different.

I couldn't.

If Brandon asked me to keep the matter away from my attorney, I knew what I would say.

No.

And if Susan suggested that I was embarrassing myself by pursuing the truth, I didn't need to persuade her otherwise.

I could let her think what she wanted.

That realization surprised me.

For years, Susan's opinion had mattered more than it should.

I had worried about appearing unsophisticated.

I had worried that my clothes or work or house gave her reasons to look down on me.

Yet none of those things had anything to do with the right to control my own identity.

My home might be small.

My life might not impress Susan.

But the documents carried my name.

Not hers.

And my permission mattered.

I looked around the kitchen.

Nothing about it was impressive.

It was simply the place where I lived.

The place where I had sat with a cup of cold coffee and finally admitted that keeping everyone happy was no longer possible.

I felt sad about that.

I also felt certain.

I was not going to turn tomorrow's conversation into a trial of Valerie's character.

I wasn't going to arrive with accusations I couldn't support.

I wasn't going to use the wedding to punish her.

I would bring the folder.

I would bring my attorney.

I would ask how my signature appeared on the lease renewal.

I would ask why a copy of my driver's license had been supplied.

And I would listen to the answers before deciding what they meant.

That was the decision.

Nothing more complicated.

Nothing less important.

I put my hand on the red cover.

For thirty years, I had tried to show Valerie that she could depend on me.

Tomorrow, I would have to show her something else.

That being dependable didn't mean being available for anyone to use without permission.

I didn't know how she would receive that lesson.

I didn't know what the documents would eventually reveal.

And I wasn't going to pretend I knew the ending.

All I had were the papers, the unanswered questions, and the conversation we'd agreed to have.

For once, I let that be enough.

I left the folder where I could find it.

Tomorrow at ten, I would ask for the truth.

And I would not withdraw the question simply because someone I loved wanted me to.
