7 – Brandon Wanted a Family Solution Without Outside Help, and I Finally Understood Why That Request Could Not Replace an Explanation

The words that stayed with me were Brandon's.

He wanted us to handle the matter ourselves.

No lawyers.

Just family.

I kept hearing that request whenever I looked at the folder.

There was something almost reasonable about it.

Families did handle private difficulties every day.

I had raised Valerie without turning every disagreement into a public affair.

We had argued.

We had misunderstood each other.

We had worked through things.

That was part of being a parent.

But I couldn't treat the papers in front of me as though they were another disagreement over feelings.

I had not signed the lease renewal.

That was different.

I had not knowingly supplied my driver's license for the purpose shown in those papers.

That was different, too.

I didn't need to accuse anyone to recognize that.

I sat at the table and looked at the documents again.

I wondered what Brandon expected me to say tomorrow.

Would he want me to accept an apology?

Would he promise it wouldn't happen again?

Would he tell me there had been a misunderstanding?

I couldn't know.

I realized I was already beginning to prepare for an explanation I hadn't heard.

That was another old habit.

Before anyone spoke, I imagined what they might say.

Then I tried to decide how to accept it without causing more trouble.

I wanted to stop doing that.

The documents were real.

The questions were real.

There was no need to make the answers easier before anyone supplied them.

I moved the coffee cup away from the folder.

A small thing.

But I didn't want anything spilling onto the pages.

That thought surprised me.

I was treating the paperwork carefully now.

Not because it was valuable in itself.

Because it might be the only way to establish what had happened.

I hadn't always understood the importance of keeping something uncomfortable in front of me.

Usually, if a family conversation became unpleasant, I tried to end it quickly.

I would change the subject.

Offer another cup of coffee.

Ask about something ordinary.

Anything to make the tension disappear.

That approach had made me useful at family gatherings.

It had also made me easy to dismiss.

Brandon knew I disliked conflict.

I couldn't say whether he counted on it.

But he had certainly seen me avoid it.

Susan had seen it, too.

She could criticize my house without worrying that I'd ask why she felt entitled to do so.

She could comment on my clothes, and I would smile.

She could speak about my job as though it were beneath her expectations, and I would find some harmless response.

I had told myself those were unimportant moments.

Perhaps individually, they were.

But together they had taught me something I didn't want to believe.

My silence was being mistaken for agreement.

Or perhaps for weakness.

I didn't know how they understood it.

I knew how it had affected me.

I had become careful around them.

Careful about what I said.

Careful about how I reacted.

Careful not to give anyone a reason to accuse me of being difficult.

Even my daughter's wedding had become something I tried to discuss delicately.

As if asking why I'd been excluded was somehow impolite.

I remembered the first feeling that came with knowing I wouldn't be there.

Disbelief.

I hadn't expected Valerie to organize her life around me.

I didn't want that.

But I thought I occupied a place in her life that wouldn't need defending.

I was her mother.

The woman who had raised her alone.

I thought she would want me to witness her marriage.

When I realized she didn't, I felt ashamed.

That was difficult to explain.

I hadn't done anything shameful by wanting an invitation.

Still, I felt as though other people had been told something about my worth.

I imagined them understanding that I wasn't wanted there.

I wanted to hide that hurt.

So I tried to make excuses.

Perhaps Valerie had felt pressured.

Perhaps Brandon had wanted things a certain way.

Perhaps it hadn't been personal.

I didn't know.

I simply wanted one of those explanations to be true.

Now I was doing the same thing with the documents.

Perhaps it was all a mistake.

Perhaps someone had misunderstood.

Perhaps there was an innocent reason for the license.

I stopped myself.

Possibilities weren't answers.

I needed to remember that.

The sunlight had shifted across the table.

I reached for the lease renewal.

I read my name again.

I tried to imagine how I would feel if the same thing had happened to somebody else.

Suppose Valerie had found paperwork carrying her signature without her consent.

Suppose she had discovered a copy of her identification attached.

Would I have told her not to worry about upsetting Brandon?

Would I have said she should keep quiet to protect her marriage?

Of course not.

I would have wanted her to understand what happened.

I would have wanted her to take the matter seriously.

I would have told her that asking questions was reasonable.

The answer was so obvious that I felt embarrassed.

I had one standard for people I loved.

And another for myself.

I was willing to protect them in ways I wouldn't protect me.

That wasn't fairness.

It wasn't even kindness.

It was a habit I had allowed to become part of my identity.

I looked at the license photocopy.

My face looked back at me.

I thought of all the ordinary times I'd used that identification.

Times when I had understood why it was needed.

Times when the decision had been mine.

I had never expected to see it used in connection with paperwork I'd never agreed to sign.

I wanted to know how it had been obtained.

I wanted to know who had supplied it.

I wanted to know whether the signature and the license had been provided by the same person.

Those were reasonable questions.

I couldn't see how asking them would damage a legitimate marriage.

If everything had been done properly, there should have been an explanation.

If something had been done improperly, that needed to be addressed.

Either way, avoiding attorneys didn't answer anything.

I kept returning to that point.

Brandon's request had sounded like an attempt to protect the family.

But protecting the family could not mean protecting an unexplained use of my name.

I didn't want to humiliate Valerie.

I didn't want her marriage to become the subject of gossip.

I didn't want Brandon punished for something he hadn't done.

And despite Susan's treatment of me, I didn't want to accuse her without evidence.

What I wanted was narrower.

I wanted to know what had happened.

That was all.

It should have been simple.

It wasn't.

Because I understood that an honest explanation might change how I saw people I loved.

I didn't want that.

I hadn't wanted any of this.

I would have preferred to be sitting at my kitchen table thinking about ordinary things.

A quiet day.

A cup of coffee.

Perhaps a conversation with Valerie that didn't leave me feeling ashamed.

Instead, I was looking at a red folder and wondering whether my trust had been used against me.

I rubbed my forehead.

I was tired.

Not physically, exactly.

I was tired of the effort required to remain calm while questioning whether my family had been honest with me.

I wanted somebody to make the situation simple.

But I knew the simplicity I wanted might not exist.

I placed the signature page beside the license photocopy.

I considered what I would say first tomorrow.

Not a speech.

Not a list of grievances.

Just a question.

"Who put my signature on this document?"

I imagined the words aloud.

They weren't cruel.

They weren't dramatic.

They were clear.

Then another question.

"How did a copy of my driver's license get attached?"

I didn't need more than that to begin.

If the answers were truthful, we could proceed from there.

If the answers were incomplete, my attorney could help me understand what needed to happen next.

I couldn't decide the outcome before hearing them.

I had learned enough that morning to know the danger of doing that.

I put the pages back in order.

I closed the folder.

Then I sat quietly for a while.

I was still afraid of tomorrow.

I was still hoping Valerie would tell me something that restored my faith in her.

I was still the mother who wanted her daughter's life to go well.

But I was no longer willing to make myself disappear so everyone else could feel comfortable.

Brandon wanted a private solution.

I wanted a truthful one.

Until I understood what had happened, those were not necessarily the same thing.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Red Folder Stayed on My Kitchen Table as I Made the Hardest Decision of My
