5 – I Had Agreed to Hear My Daughter Out at Ten, but I Was No Longer Willing to Explain Away the Signature

I had always been better at preparing apologies than asking difficult questions.

That was what troubled me as I looked at the red folder.

The folder hadn't moved.

Neither had the coffee cup beside it.

I had left them both on the kitchen table after ending the call.

For once, I hadn't rushed to make peace.

I had agreed to another conversation.

Tomorrow at ten.

My attorney would be there.

I kept repeating that to myself because it was the one decision I had made without asking whether Valerie would approve.

I didn't know what she would say when we spoke again.

I didn't know what Brandon would say.

And I certainly didn't know whether Susan would treat the matter seriously.

But I knew what I had to ask.

Who had signed the lease renewal?

And why was my driver's license attached?

I opened the folder.

The signature was still there.

So was the copy of my identification.

I looked at them without touching the writing.

There was something upsetting about how ordinary the documents appeared.

Nothing about the paper announced that a person might have been deceived.

Nothing about the neat arrangement showed what it felt like to find your own name used without permission.

It was just paperwork.

Until it wasn't.

I wondered how many times I had accepted an explanation because I didn't want to make somebody uncomfortable.

Too many.

That much I knew.

When Valerie needed help, I rarely asked whether the request was fair.

When Brandon spoke to me sharply, I looked for reasons he might be under pressure.

When Susan criticized my house, I told myself she was simply accustomed to different things.

I kept finding reasons for other people's behavior.

And almost none for my own discomfort.

I could see that now.

It embarrassed me.

Not because kindness was wrong.

But because I had started treating my own judgment as something I should distrust.

The morning's conversation had shown me how quickly that could happen.

I had raised a question about a signature.

Within minutes, the discussion had become about whether I was a selfish mother.

I hadn't noticed the change immediately.

That was the worst part.

For a moment, I had actually felt guilty.

I had wondered whether asking about the document would hurt Valerie.

As though my daughter being unhappy was proof that I had done something wrong.

I closed my eyes.

I remembered her voice.

"Mom, please."

Only two words.

But they had nearly been enough.

I still heard the little girl I had raised whenever Valerie sounded upset.

I couldn't help it.

Thirty years didn't disappear because she had become an adult.

I remembered being responsible for her.

I remembered knowing that if something frightened her, she would turn toward me.

That had been our arrangement for so long.

She needed protection.

I provided it.

I never expected that arrangement to become a reason I couldn't protect myself.

Yet there I was.

Looking at paperwork bearing a signature I didn't recognize as mine.

And worrying that asking questions might upset her.

I shook my head.

I wasn't proud of how easily I slipped into that habit.

I wanted to be fair to Valerie.

I wanted to be fair to Brandon.

Even Susan deserved not to be blamed for something without evidence.

But fairness didn't require blindness.

It required me to separate what I knew from what I feared.

I knew I hadn't signed the document.

I knew a copy of my license had been attached.

I knew Brandon wanted to keep attorneys away.

Those were facts.

I didn't know who had prepared the paperwork.

I didn't know who had provided my identification.

I didn't know whether Valerie understood what had happened.

Those were questions.

I needed to keep them separate.

It would have been easy to decide Brandon was responsible.

He had been dismissive of me before.

His response on the call hadn't helped.

But being rude wasn't evidence of forgery.

I reminded myself of that.

It would have been easy to blame Susan, too.

Her remarks had hurt me for years.

She had always seemed comfortable making me feel inferior.

But a cutting comment about my job wasn't proof that she had misused my identity.

And Valerie?

That was the question I found hardest to approach.

My daughter knew me.

She knew my life.

She knew what I would do for her.

I wanted to believe that meant she would never take advantage of me.

I couldn't say I was certain anymore.

The thought made my stomach tighten.

I placed the photocopy back on the lease renewal.

Then I moved it away again so I could see the signature.

I kept looking between the two.

They belonged together in the paperwork.

That was what frightened me.

One document appeared to speak for me.

The other appeared to establish who I was.

Yet I had taken no part in preparing either for that purpose.

I thought about tomorrow's conversation.

I didn't want it to become a performance.

I didn't want Brandon making speeches about family loyalty.

I didn't want Susan deciding whether my feelings were reasonable.

And I didn't want Valerie crying or pleading until I forgot what I had asked.

I wanted simple explanations.

Not comforting words.

Not another promise that everything would be fine.

An explanation.

I looked toward the phone.

It was within reach.

I knew I could call Valerie again.

I could tell her how frightened I was.

I could ask her to speak to me privately before Brandon became involved.

For a few seconds, that seemed like the kindest approach.

Then I remembered the call we'd already had.

I had tried to make the issue clear.

They had tried to make it something else.

I couldn't keep repeating that conversation.

Not because I had stopped loving Valerie.

Because I needed to understand what had happened before deciding what forgiveness might require.

I picked up the coffee.

It was still cold.

I put it back down.

The little cup had become a reminder of how long I'd sat there.

How much time I'd spent trying to decide whether I was allowed to trust myself.

I felt foolish about that.

I shouldn't have needed permission to question a signature that wasn't mine.

But I had spent years accepting other people's opinions as more important than my own.

That didn't change in a morning.

Even now, I caught myself rehearsing an apology.

"I'm sorry this has become difficult."

I could almost hear myself saying it.

I knew how Brandon would respond.

He would probably accept the apology as though I'd admitted the entire matter was my doing.

Then we would be right back where we started.

I pressed my hands against the table.

No.

I didn't need to apologize for discovering the documents.

I didn't need to apologize for being excluded from a wedding, either.

I could be sad about it without being unreasonable.

I could love my daughter without agreeing with her decisions.

And I could insist on the truth without trying to destroy her marriage.

Those things could all be true.

I had to remember that when we spoke again.

I looked at the folder's red cover.

It had been such an ordinary object before the documents inside it changed everything.

Now I couldn't see it without thinking about my daughter.

Not simply the wedding.

Not only Brandon.

The years of trust behind us.

That was what I was afraid of losing.

I had given Valerie so much of my life willingly.

I didn't regret raising her.

I didn't regret loving her.

I didn't even regret the difficult years.

But I regretted the times I had confused keeping her happy with keeping our relationship healthy.

There was a difference.

I saw it now.

When I never objected, Valerie never had to hear how her decisions affected me.

When I accepted Brandon's condescension, he never had to reconsider how he spoke.

When I ignored Susan's remarks, she had no reason to stop.

I had called that patience.

Sometimes it was fear.

I could admit that much.

I couldn't change what I had allowed before.

I could change what I did next.

I closed the folder.

I left the coffee beside it.

Then I looked at the phone once more.

I wanted Valerie to call.

I wanted her to tell me she understood.

I wanted to hear that there had been some misunderstanding and that she would help explain it.

But wanting something didn't make it happen.

And it didn't make it true.

Tomorrow at ten, I would listen.

I would give them a fair opportunity to explain.

I would not accuse anyone without evidence.

But I would not let them turn the conversation back toward the wedding whenever the paperwork became uncomfortable.

For the first time in years, I understood that refusing to retreat was not the same as being cruel.

I had asked for the truth.

Now I was prepared to hear it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Wanted to Believe Valerie Had Made an Innocent Mistake, but Believing Her Without
