19 – When I Looked at the Blue Jar the Next Morning, I Understood That Keeping a Promise Meant Continuing Even When I Had No New Answer

The next morning began quietly.

I woke, checked the telephone, and found no message.

I made tea.

Then I prepared breakfast.

The blue jar sat on the table, its lid still closed.

I had grown used to seeing it there.

At first, it had seemed like a small object that might help me understand Amber's plan.

Now I understood that it meant something different to Bentley.

It was one of the few things he could still point to and say his mother had left it for them.

I wasn't going to move it unless there was a reason.

Bentley came into the kitchen after I had set out the plates.

He looked toward the counter.

Then he looked at the jar.

“Morning,” I said.

“Morning.”

He sat down.

I put breakfast in front of him.

He ate without waiting for Maddie to take the first bite.

That small change made me feel hopeful, though I tried not to show it too much.

When Maddie joined us, she asked for more food.

Bentley looked at her plate.

I waited.

He didn't reach for it.

He simply asked, “Do you want another pancake?”

Maddie nodded.

I gave her one.

Bentley returned to his own breakfast.

After we finished eating, I washed the dishes and checked my notes again.

I knew what I had already asked.

I knew what information I had been given.

I didn't want to repeat the same questions without making it clear that the children were still waiting and still needed help.

I called again.

I explained the situation calmly.

I gave Amber's name and described what Bentley had told me about the accident and surgery.

I said the last call the children remembered had been six days earlier.

I explained that I had been caring for them and that I needed guidance on how to get their concern to the appropriate person.

I listened.

I wrote down the response.

I asked for clarification when I didn't understand something.

I did not claim to be a relative.

I did not pretend to know more than I did.

I explained what I could verify and what remained uncertain.

When the call ended, I set down the telephone.

The answer was still incomplete.

I had not spoken directly to Amber.

I had not learned when she might return.

I had not been able to tell the children that their mother was all right.

I sat for a moment with my hands folded on the table.

I was beginning to understand that helping someone did not always mean producing an immediate result.

Sometimes it meant continuing to ask the questions that had not yet been answered.

Sometimes it meant admitting what you didn't know.

And sometimes it meant making sure a child did not have to carry the uncertainty alone.

Bentley appeared in the doorway.

“Did you talk to her?”

“No, sweetheart.”

He nodded.

I could see the disappointment, but he didn't look as though he expected me to change the answer.

“Did they tell you anything?”

“I got more guidance about how to continue asking for help, but I still don't have confirmation about your mother.”

He pulled out a chair.

“Okay.”

I sat beside him.

“I know you wanted a different answer.”

He looked at the jar.

“I wanted to know if she was coming home.”

“I know.”

He traced the edge of the table with one finger.

“I keep thinking that if I had said more when she called, she might have done something.”

I turned toward him.

“Bentley, you didn't cause this by leaving things out of a telephone conversation.”

“But she didn't know we needed food.”

“You told her what you could while you were frightened and trying to take care of Maddie.”

He shook his head.

“I should've told her.”

“You wish you had.”

He looked up.

I continued carefully.

“Wishing you had said something different is not the same as being responsible for what happened.”

He was quiet.

I let him think.

Then he asked, “Do you think she was scared?”

I considered the question.

“I don't know what she was feeling when she called you.”

He looked away.

“But she might have been,” I added. “People can be frightened when they are hurt or when they don't know what will happen next.”

Bentley nodded slowly.

“I wish I could tell her we were okay.”

I glanced at the blue jar.

“You can tell her what happened when you speak to her again.”

He looked at me.

“And you can tell her that you tried to take care of Maddie,” I said. “You don't have to pretend it was easy.”

He rubbed his eyes.

“I don't want her to worry.”

“I know.”

“But I want her to know.”

“That makes sense.”

He sat quietly for a while.

Then he reached for the jar and moved it a little closer.

I didn't stop him.

He rested his hands beside it.

“Can we keep it here until Mom comes back?”

“Yes.”

He looked at me carefully.

“You don't mind?”

“No, Bentley. I don't mind.”

He nodded.

For a moment, we sat without speaking.

Then Maddie came running into the kitchen, carrying the toy telephone.

“Bentley! It rings!”

She pressed the toy against her ear and made a little ringing sound.

Bentley looked at her.

She held the toy out to him.

“Your turn.”

He accepted it.

He held it to his ear, then smiled at her.

“Hello?”

Maddie burst into laughter.

“It's Mommy!”

Bentley's smile faltered, but he didn't look away.

He handed the toy back gently.

“Maybe you can tell her about your game when we talk to her.”

Maddie seemed pleased with that answer.

She ran back to the living room.

Bentley watched her go.

Then he looked at me.

“I didn't tell her we were okay this time.”

“No,” I said. “You told her you didn't know.”

He nodded.

“I think that's better.”

“I think so, too.”

I put the telephone back on the counter.

The blue jar remained on the table.

Nothing about Amber's situation had become clear that morning.

But Bentley had begun to understand that he could tell the truth without betraying his mother.

He could admit that he was scared without failing his sister.

He could ask for help without making himself responsible for what adults did next.

Those were important things.

They did not answer the questions we still had.

They did not replace the mother who was missing from the children's lives.

But they mattered.

I made another cup of tea and sat beside Bentley while Maddie played.

We waited together.

PART 19 END

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: I Could Not Promise Bentley When His Mother Would Come Home, but I Could Finally Show Him That He No Longer Had to Face the Waiting Alone

The next morning began quietly.
