lives to be different.

I couldn't know exactly what Amber had intended when she told Bentley to stay home.

I couldn't know what she had believed would happen if she couldn't return.

But I could see the burden her words had placed on him.

“Your mother wanted you both to be safe,” I said.

He looked down.

“I was only he had spoken sooner.

Those things might have been true in another sense, but they would not have helped him now.

He had finally told me what he was carrying.

The least I could do was listen.

After a while, he asked whether I was going to make another call.

“I will.”

“Today?”

“Yes.”

He there.

When he returned, he sat beside Maddie on the rug.

She handed him a toy and told him it was a telephone.

He held it to his ear.

“Hello?”

Maddie giggled.

“It's Mommy!”

Bentley froze.

For one terrible second, I saw the hope return to his face so quickly that he seemed unable to control it.

Then Maddie laughed again and took the toy from him.

“Mommy says hello!”

Bentley forced a smile.

“That's nice, Maddie.”

He handed the toy back.

I watched him sit quietly while she continued playing.

He didn't scold her.

He didn't tell her not to say their mother's name.

He simply let her enjoy her game.

That afternoon, I made another call and explained the situation again.

I kept my notes beside me.

I made sure I didn't confuse what Bentley had told me with what I knew for myself.

When the call ended, I wrote down the information I had received.

It wasn't the answer we needed.

But it gave me another step to follow.

I put the notes in the drawer beside the telephone.

Then I returned to the living room.

Bentley was lying on the rug with one arm beneath his head.

Maddie had arranged her toys around him.

“Are you playing?” I asked.

He looked at the ceiling.

“I'm resting.”

“That's allowed.”

He turned his head toward me.

“I know.”

This time, he said it without sounding as though he was trying to convince himself.

I sat on the couch and let him rest.

For a while, the only sound in the house was Maddie talking to her toys.

The telephone stayed quiet.

But Bentley was no longer the only person carrying the unanswered questions.

I had heard what he had been afraid to say.

I wasn't going to make him carry it alone again.

PART 17 END

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The Empty Days Had Changed the Way Bentley Looked at Every
