was awake.

She came into the kitchen rubbing her eyes, carrying a small blanket behind her.

Bentley stood up immediately.

“Do you want breakfast?”

Maddie nodded.

“Pancakes.”

“Arlene made pancakes,” he told her.

She climbed into the chair and waited while I warmed the plate.

Bentley stayed beside her.

He watched as I cut the pancakes into small squares and put the plate in front of her.

“Not too much syrup,” he reminded me.

“I remember.”

Maddie picked up a piece with her fingers.

She ate it, then reached for another.

Bentley relaxed a little when he saw her eating.

I sat across from them with my tea.

For a few minutes, the kitchen felt almost ordinary.

Maddie talked about a dream she had forgotten halfway through explaining it.

She asked whether we had any crackers.

I told her we did.

Bentley glanced toward the cupboard.

“I can get them.”

“I'll get them,” I said.

He stopped.

I took a small packet from the cupboard and placed it on the table.

Maddie accepted it happily.

Bentley watched her open it.

Then he looked at me.

“You don't have to do everything,” I said.

He gave a small nod.

“I know.”

But I could see that knowing and believing were still two different things.

After breakfast, Maddie wanted to sit near the window.

I brought her blanket and helped her onto the couch.

Bentley followed with the crackers.

He placed them beside her, then returned to the kitchen.

He seemed restless without a task.

I was wiping the table when he spoke.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Can we go back to our house for a little while?”

I stopped wiping.

“What would you like to do there?”

He looked toward the front door.

“I want to check the blue jar.”

I remembered the jar sitting in Amber's kitchen.

I remembered the money inside it, set aside for food and whatever else the children might need while she was away.

I also remembered how carefully Bentley had explained that his mother had told him about it.

“Are you worried the money is gone?”

He shook his head.

“I just want to see it.”

“All right.”

He looked surprised that I hadn't said no.

“We can go together,” I told him. “We'll make sure Maddie is comfortable, and we won't stay longer than you want.”

He glanced toward the couch.

“She can come.”

“If you think she'll be comfortable.”

He nodded.

I finished wiping the table and put the cloth beside the sink.

Then I helped Maddie get her shoes on.

She complained that one shoe felt funny.

Bentley knelt down and checked the strap.

He adjusted it without being asked.

I let him finish, then handed him his own shoes.

He put them on and tied the laces.

I gathered the keys and checked that the telephone was with me.

Before we left, I looked at the kitchen.

The plates were washed.

The pancakes were covered.

The blue dish towel hung over the oven handle.

I had been trying to keep the house orderly because it was one thing I could control.

But the children did not need everything to be perfect.

They needed adults to stop pretending that they were supposed to manage the impossible alone.

I opened the front door.

Bentley stepped outside first, then waited for Maddie.

She took his hand.

He held it carefully, as if she might disappear if he loosened his grip.

We walked the short distance to their house.

The morning air was cool.

Bentley said very little.

Maddie asked whether we were going to see her toys.

“Yes,” he told her.

“And my cup?”

“Yes.”

“And my bed?”

“Yes, Maddie.”

She seemed satisfied.

When we reached the house, Bentley stopped on the path.

He looked at the front door.

“What's wrong?” I asked.

“Nothing.”

He took a breath.

Then he walked forward and let himself in.

The house was still.

The air smelled faintly of old food and the ordinary things that had been left behind.

Bentley moved toward the kitchen.

I followed at a comfortable distance.

Maddie stayed beside me, looking around with the uncertain expression of a child who recognized everything but couldn't understand why it felt different.

The blue jar was where Bentley had left it.

He stood in front of it without touching it.

“There it is,” he said.

“Yes.”

He looked at the lid.

“Mom said there was money in it.”

“I remember.”

“She said it was for food.”

He glanced toward the refrigerator.

I knew he was thinking about the nearly empty shelves.

He was thinking about the crackers and the rice, about the food he had divided between himself and his sister, and about the days he had tried to make things last.

I stepped closer.

“Bentley, you did what you could with what you had.”

He shook his head.

“I should've used the money.”

“You were trying to follow your mother's instructions.”

“But we needed food.”

“Yes. You did.”

He looked at the jar again.

“I thought if I didn't touch it, there'd be enough when she came home.”

I didn't answer immediately.

There was no way to know what he had imagined during those days.

Maybe he had thought that if he followed every instruction exactly, he could keep the whole family safe until Amber returned.

Maybe the jar had become more than money.

It had become proof that his mother had planned for them.

As long as it remained where she left it, he could tell himself that the plan was still working.

“Your mother put that money there because she wanted you to have what you needed,” I said.

He kept his eyes on the jar.

“I know.”

“Using it for food wouldn't have meant you failed her.”

He rubbed one thumb against the side of his hand.

“I didn't know that.”

“I know you didn't.”

Maddie tugged gently at his sleeve.

“Can I see?”

Bentley moved aside.

She peered at the jar, then looked up at him.

“Is that Mom's?”

“It's the money Mom left.”

“Is she coming back for it?”

Bentley froze.

I saw the question land on him.

He looked at me, and for a moment I thought he might ask me to answer for him.

Instead, he crouched beside his sister.

“We don't know when she's coming home,” he said carefully.

Maddie frowned.

“But she said she would.”

“I know.”

She looked at the jar once more.

Then she lost interest and wandered toward the living room, where her toys were scattered on the floor.

Bentley stayed beside the counter.

“Can I keep the jar near me?” he asked.

I looked at him.

“Do you mean take it back to my house?”

He nodded.

“I don't want anything to happen to it.”

I understood.

He wanted to keep the one thing his mother had deliberately left for them close by.

He wanted something he could see and touch, something that had not gone silent or disappeared.

“We can bring it with us if that makes you feel better,” I said. “We won't spend the money without talking about what the children need.”

He watched me carefully.

“Really?”

“Really.”

I picked up the jar and held it out.

He took it with both hands.

It wasn't heavy, but he carried it as if it were something fragile.

Maddie came back into the kitchen holding a toy.

“Can we go now?”

“Yes,” Bentley told her.

He tucked the jar against his chest.

I locked the front door behind us.

On the walk back, he kept his eyes on the jar.

He didn't talk about the money again.

But when we reached my house, he placed it on the kitchen table, beside the telephone.

He adjusted it once, then stepped back.

The jar and the telephone stood side by side.

One held the promise his mother had made before she left.

The other was the place where he still hoped to hear her voice.

I didn't move either of them.

I went to the cupboard and took out the crackers Maddie had asked for.

Then I set three glasses of water on the table.

Bentley sat down at last.

He rested his hands in his lap and looked at the blue jar.

I sat across from him.

“We'll keep trying to find out what happened,” I said.

He nodded.

This time, he didn't ask me to promise that his mother would come home.

He only asked whether the telephone would stay on the table.

“Yes,” I told him. “It will stay right here.”

And for the moment, that was enough for him to take a breath and reach for a cracker.

PART 12 END

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Blue Jar Sat Beside My Telephone, and Bentley Watched Both as Though One Might Bring His Mother Home

By midmorning, Maddie was awake.
