15 – I Remembered Every Safeguard I Had Added While Avoiding the One Decision That Would Have Truly Separated Landon From My Company

The part I regretted most wasn't giving Landon the card.

It was knowing when the arrangement needed to end and finding reasons to delay.

I had been able to see the problem.

Not always clearly.

Not all at once.

But enough to know that the financial boundaries between my company and my marriage needed work.

I had taken some steps.

I had changed account managers.

I had separated certain expenses.

I had introduced additional protections.

Those were real decisions.

They weren't imaginary efforts I made to feel better about doing nothing.

But they also weren't enough.

Because whenever I approached the question of Landon's access directly, the same argument returned.

Why was I treating him like an outsider?

Why did I have to make everything so formal?

Why couldn't I trust my own husband?

I could remember how those questions affected me.

I didn't like being made to defend my commitment to the marriage.

I didn't like the idea that something as ordinary as controlling a company card might be interpreted as an accusation.

And I didn't like how quickly our conversations moved away from the original issue.

So I would retreat.

I would tell myself I could deal with it later.

I would persuade myself that another safeguard might be sufficient.

And the card would remain available.

I looked at the phone in my hand.

The notification hadn't changed.

A declined transaction.

That was all.

Yet I couldn't stop thinking about how many earlier decisions had led to it.

If I had fully withdrawn Landon's access when I first understood the problem, there would have been nothing unusual about the card being unavailable after our divorce.

He wouldn't have been able to assume that the old arrangement still existed.

At least, not reasonably.

But I had left the matter unfinished.

I hadn't done that because I lacked the knowledge.

I hadn't done it because I didn't understand the company's ownership.

I hadn't done it because Landon held some hidden formal position I couldn't remove.

He held no such position.

I had delayed because confronting him was unpleasant.

There it was.

A plain explanation.

Not a flattering one.

But true.

Dad sat across from me.

I could almost hear his earlier words again.

He had told me that I had allowed Landon to treat access as though it were ownership.

The longer I considered it, the more I realized the problem wasn't limited to Landon's expectations.

It affected the way I thought about my own authority.

I had begun to treat necessary decisions as though they needed to pass a personal test.

Would Landon feel respected?

Would he feel trusted?

Would he accuse me of making our marriage into a financial contract?

Those questions became obstacles.

And because I couldn't always answer them in a way that pleased him, I stopped short.

I thought about how differently I handled other company matters.

I didn't make every business decision based on whether someone might become offended.

I understood that protecting accounts required clear limits.

I understood that access needed to correspond to actual responsibility.

I understood that someone without formal authority shouldn't be able to behave as though they controlled company funds.

But with Landon, I had made an exception.

Then another.

Then another.

The exceptions accumulated until they felt like the arrangement itself.

That was what I had been living with.

Not one dramatic decision.

A series of small concessions.

Each one easier to justify than the last.

Each one making the next boundary harder to establish.

I used to tell myself I was keeping our marriage peaceful.

But peace that depended on never disappointing someone wasn't stable.

It required constant maintenance.

Constant adjustment.

Constant willingness to surrender.

And I had become exhausted by it.

I hadn't recognized the exhaustion immediately.

It had become familiar.

An ordinary part of being married to Landon.

Now that the divorce was final, I could see it more clearly.

I didn't need to keep managing his reactions.

I didn't need to protect his expectations about the card.

I didn't need to allow his frustration to determine whether the company's financial safeguards remained in place.

I knew all of that.

Yet I still felt uneasy.

That was another thing I was learning.

Recognizing a habit didn't immediately erase it.

I could understand why I had been wrong and still feel the urge to repeat the mistake.

I could know that Landon's access needed to end and still feel uncomfortable when he became angry.

I could be confident in the decision and still wish the conversation would stop.

Those feelings existed together.

For a moment, I closed my eyes.

I didn't want to be the person who needed everyone to approve of her boundaries.

I didn't want to spend another year rearranging sensible decisions around someone else's objections.

And I didn't want my company's finances to remain tied to a marriage that was already over.

I opened my eyes.

Dad was looking at me.

He hadn't changed his position.

Neither had I.

The card remained unavailable.

That mattered more than how nervous I felt.

I remembered how easily I had reversed decisions in the past.

Sometimes all Landon needed to do was sound offended.

I would begin explaining.

He would object again.

And eventually I would offer whatever adjustment seemed likely to end the disagreement.

I had spent years confusing the end of an argument with the resolution of a problem.

But the problems remained.

The company card remained.

My doubts remained.

And the next confrontation always seemed to arrive.

This time, I wasn't giving myself that temporary relief.

I wasn't restoring the card just to hear Landon's voice become less angry.

I wasn't promising another discussion about whether the restriction was fair.

I wasn't treating the company's money as something he could claim because we had once been married.

The decision was already made.

I had changed the PINs.

The card had been declined.

And Landon had been told he was not authorized to use it.

I took another breath.

I couldn't make the past more responsible than it had been.

I could only stop repeating the same choice.

I knew the difference now.

Changing an account manager was a safeguard.

Separating expenses was a safeguard.

Restricting access was a safeguard.

But keeping a safeguard in place when someone objected was a decision about responsibility.

That was the part I had avoided.

Not anymore.

I looked at the phone.

The notification remained where it had been.

And I let myself feel the discomfort without allowing it to change my answer.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: The Divorce Had Ended Our Marriage
