13 – I Had Finally Refused to Restore Landon’s Card, but I Was Still Learning How to Stand Behind a Decision He Hated

The card remained blocked.

That was the one thing I knew for certain.

Landon had objected.

He had demanded an explanation.

He had spoken as though I had taken something that belonged to him.

And I had refused to change my decision.

I should have felt settled.

Instead, I felt uncomfortable.

I was still holding the phone, still listening to the sounds around him, still waiting for the argument to reach the point where I would normally give in.

That was what twelve years had done to me.

I knew how to anticipate Landon's disappointment before he even finished speaking.

I knew how to soften an answer.

I knew how to turn a perfectly reasonable boundary into something that sounded almost like a request for permission.

But I didn't want to do that anymore.

I looked at Dad.

Martin Bell sat across from me without saying a word.

He had already given me his advice.

The PINs needed changing.

Landon's financial access needed to stop.

And I needed to recognize the difference between allowing someone to use an account and giving that person a right to it.

Dad hadn't needed a long explanation.

He had understood the situation almost immediately.

I wished I could say the same about myself.

I had known the facts for years.

Landon had never been employed by my company.

He wasn't a director.

He held no shares.

He had no signing authority.

Those were not details anyone could reasonably dispute.

Yet I had spent an extraordinary amount of time acting as though they were open for discussion.

Whenever I tried to limit his access, Landon accused me of making our marriage too formal.

Too distant.

Too much like a financial arrangement.

He made it sound as though having separate responsibilities meant we no longer trusted each other.

And I listened.

I listened even when I knew better.

That was the part I kept returning to.

It was easy to say Landon had taken advantage of my reluctance to argue.

It was harder to admit how consistently I had allowed my reluctance to decide for me.

I had changed account managers.

I had added protections.

I had separated certain expenses.

I had taken enough action to reassure myself that I was managing the problem.

But I hadn't finished.

The supplementary card remained available.

And as long as it remained available, Landon could continue acting as though the arrangement was normal.

I remembered how ordinary the card had seemed when I first provided it.

A practical convenience.

Travel.

Household expenses.

Nothing that seemed especially dangerous at the time.

I wasn't giving him ownership.

I wasn't appointing him to a position.

I certainly wasn't imagining a day when our divorce would be finalized and he would still expect the company to cover a charge at a luxury club.

But intentions weren't enough.

I had learned that slowly.

And painfully.

The phone shifted slightly in my hand.

I could still hear the club.

Music in the background.

The faint noise of glasses.

Voices overlapping.

Tessa had sounded impatient earlier.

I didn't know what she had been told.

I didn't know what Landon had expected the evening to look like.

I knew only that a transaction had failed and he had immediately demanded that I correct it.

That told me enough about his expectations.

He had encountered an inconvenience.

He wanted me to remove it.

I had been doing that for him for years.

I pressed my fingers against the table.

The surface felt cool.

Dad noticed my movement.

His expression remained serious.

I wondered whether he could see how difficult something so simple still felt.

I wasn't afraid of making a financial decision.

I had made plenty of them.

I was afraid of the response.

That distinction embarrassed me.

But it was true.

I had learned to associate Landon's anger with the possibility that I had done something wrong.

Even when the decision was reasonable.

Even when the company needed protecting.

Even when the facts were clear.

His anger would arrive, and my certainty would disappear.

Not all at once.

A little at a time.

I would begin with a firm answer.

Then I would explain.

Then I would apologize for upsetting him.

Then I would offer an exception.

By the end of the conversation, I might still believe my original decision was correct.

But I would have abandoned it anyway.

I used to call that keeping the peace.

Now I could see how much it had cost.

I looked at the declined transaction again.

One unsuccessful payment.

One company card.

One man who had mistaken a privilege for something permanent.

There was nothing especially complicated about the situation.

The complexity came from twelve years of history.

From all the times I had given way.

From the fear that refusing Landon meant I was failing as a wife.

I wasn't his wife anymore.

The divorce had been finalized that morning.

That fact should have made the answer easier.

In one sense, it did.

I no longer had to wonder whether a financial boundary would damage our marriage.

The marriage was over.

But my habits hadn't caught up with that reality.

I still wanted him to understand.

I still wanted him to agree.

I still wanted the conversation to end without anyone feeling offended.

And I was finally beginning to accept that I might not get any of those things.

I looked at Dad again.

He hadn't promised that Landon would accept the restriction.

He hadn't suggested that changing the PINs would make every remaining problem disappear.

He had only told me what needed to be done.

That was the difference between his advice and the reassurance I had spent years looking for.

Dad wasn't trying to make the decision comfortable.

He was trying to make me face it.

I thought about the company.

It had always been my responsibility.

Not because I was married.

Not because Landon approved.

Because it was my business.

And responsibilities didn't vanish when someone became upset about them.

I kept the phone against my ear.

I wasn't going to repeat the entire history of our marriage to justify a blocked card.

I wasn't going to reopen every argument about trust.

I wasn't going to defend the existence of company rules that Landon had never had authority to change.

I had already told him what mattered.

He wasn't permitted to use the card.

It belonged to the company.

That was enough.

For years, I had believed that saying no was only the beginning of an argument I would eventually lose.

Now I understood something different.

An argument didn't have to end with Landon agreeing for my decision to remain valid.

He could be angry.

He could dislike the restriction.

He could believe I had treated him unfairly.

None of those reactions gave him ownership of the card.

None of them changed his relationship to the company.

And none of them required me to reverse what I had done.

I let the silence sit for a moment.

The sounds of the club continued.

Somewhere beyond Landon's voice, people were carrying on with their own conversations.

I realized how much energy I had spent imagining everyone's discomfort except my own.

I had worried about how Landon might feel if a payment failed.

I had worried about whether he would feel embarrassed.

I had worried about whether he would accuse me of being unreasonable.

Meanwhile, I had lived for years with financial uncertainty I knew how to address.

I had accepted that discomfort because it seemed easier than confronting his.

That was the decision I regretted.

Not changing the PINs.

Not refusing the card.

Not making the company responsible for its own boundaries.

I regretted waiting.

And I understood that regret would mean very little if I gave in again.

I looked at the notification.

Declined.

It was still there.

I had not restored his access.

For once, the decision I made and the decision I kept were the same.
