12 – I Could Not Undo the Years I Had Given Landon Access, but I Could Refuse to Restore It Simply Because He Demanded It

By the time I looked at Dad again, I understood something I hadn't expected.

Changing the PINs had been the easy part.

Living with the decision was harder.

I had imagined that once the divorce was final, certain things would become obvious.

We would no longer be married.

Our financial arrangements would have to reflect that.

Landon would no longer have the privileges he had enjoyed because I was his wife.

It sounded straightforward.

But habits built over twelve years didn't disappear with a court order.

Mine certainly hadn't.

I could still hear the old instructions in my head.

Don't upset him.

Explain yourself.

Be reasonable.

Find a compromise.

Those thoughts had followed me through countless conversations.

And now they were appearing again, even though the marriage they were meant to protect had ended.

I thought about the supplementary card.

When I first allowed Landon to use it, the arrangement had been practical.

Travel and certain household expenses.

Nothing more complicated than that.

At least, that had been my intention.

But I hadn't kept the boundaries clear.

As our marriage continued, I allowed the convenience of the arrangement to matter more than the company's formal authority.

I introduced safeguards.

I separated some costs.

I changed account managers.

Yet I never completed the most important step.

I didn't fully withdraw Landon's access.

Every attempt brought another accusation.

Every accusation made me question whether I was being unnecessarily harsh.

And every time I backed down, I made the next attempt more difficult.

I understood that now.

The realization didn't make me feel clever.

It made me feel tired.

I had spent so much time trying to manage Landon's reactions that I had neglected my own judgment.

I knew the difference between a company account and personal money.

I knew the difference between a supplementary cardholder and an owner.

I knew that marriage didn't automatically create a directorship or signing authority.

But knowledge hadn't been enough.

I needed to act on it.

That was what Dad had been trying to tell me.

I glanced toward him.

He was still there.

Calm.

Patient.

Not taking over.

I appreciated that more than I could say.

He hadn't made the decision for me.

He had reminded me of the responsibility I already had.

And for once, I wasn't asking him to soften the truth.

I looked at the phone.

Landon was still the man I had spent twelve years married to.

That didn't stop being true simply because the divorce was final.

There had been anniversaries.

Arguments.

Apologies.

Ordinary days when I believed things might improve.

I couldn't erase those memories.

Nor did I need to.

But those memories weren't authorization to spend company funds.

Our history didn't make him an employee.

Our marriage hadn't made him a shareholder.

And our divorce didn't require me to preserve privileges that had existed only with my permission.

I had to remind myself of that because the emotional part was still difficult.

I didn't enjoy telling Landon no.

I didn't enjoy knowing he was angry.

I didn't enjoy hearing the noises of the club and realizing he was dealing with a declined payment in front of other people.

But discomfort wasn't the same as wrongdoing.

That distinction had taken me far too long to learn.

I thought again about Dad's observation.

Landon might not have believed every rule was meaningless.

He might simply have expected me to remove whatever obstacle appeared.

I couldn't say exactly what he believed.

But I knew what he had done.

He had tried to use the card.

When it failed, he called.

And instead of acknowledging that it belonged to the business, he accused me of having no right to stop him.

That was enough to show me the pattern hadn't changed.

What mattered was whether I would change mine.

I held the phone firmly.

"I've already told you," I said.

My voice was quiet.

"The card belongs to my company. You aren't authorized to use it."

I didn't add another explanation.

I had nothing new to explain.

Landon's position hadn't changed during the conversation.

He still had no formal role in the business.

He still had no ownership stake.

He still had no authority to spend through its accounts.

And I was still responsible for protecting them.

I looked at the declined transaction.

It remained exactly what it had been from the beginning.

A payment that hadn't gone through.

I had once feared that enforcing a boundary would damage my marriage.

Now the marriage was over, and I could see how much damage avoiding boundaries had done to my peace of mind.

I couldn't recover all the time I had spent arguing.

I couldn't take back every decision I had reversed.

I couldn't pretend that I had always handled the situation well.

But I could recognize the mistake without repeating it.

Dad met my eyes.

I didn't need him to tell me what to do next.

I already knew what I wasn't going to do.

I wasn't restoring the card.

I wasn't apologizing for protecting the company.

And I wasn't allowing Landon's anger to become the reason I abandoned a decision I knew was necessary.

For the first time that morning, the fact that he might remain unhappy didn't feel like a problem I had to solve.

The card had been declined.

The boundary remained.

And I intended to keep it that way.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: I Had Finally Refused to Restore Landon’s Card, but I Was Still Learning How to Stand Behind a Decision He Hated

By the time I looked at Dad again, I understood something I hadn't expected.
