I said.

I kept my voice steady.

Not warm.

Not angry.

Just steady.

The difference felt strange.

Normally, by this point, I would have started defending myself.

I would have explained that I wasn't trying to hurt him.

I would have reminded him that I cared about his feelings.

I would have offered some compromise before he even asked for one.

That was how I had handled too many conversations during our marriage.

I called it patience.

Looking back, I think fear was a more accurate word.

I was afraid of another argument.

Afraid of being accused of mistrust.

Afraid that setting an ordinary financial limit would turn into a discussion about whether our marriage mattered to me.

And so I kept stepping backward.

Until I couldn't remember where the boundary was supposed to have been.

Dad watched me from across the table.

He hadn't interrupted.

He hadn't asked to speak to Landon.

He was allowing me to finish something I had avoided for years.

I appreciated that.

Even though part of me wished he would take the phone and handle everything himself.

That was an embarrassing thought.

I was capable of running a company.

I could make financial decisions.

I could work with account managers and put safeguards in place.

Yet here I was, struggling to tell my former husband that he couldn't continue using a supplementary card.

The contrast wasn't lost on me.

"You're not authorized to use company funds," I said.

There it was again.

The simplest explanation.

The one I should never have needed to repeat.

Landon had never worked for the business.

He had never held shares.

He had never been appointed a director.

He wasn't permitted to sign on the company's accounts.

Marriage hadn't changed any of those facts.

Neither had the convenience of a supplementary card.

I looked down at the notification.

Declined.

The word seemed almost too small for what it meant to me.

I wasn't celebrating Landon's embarrassment.

I didn't want him standing in a club arguing about payment.

But I wasn't going to restore his access simply to spare him that discomfort.

That had been my mistake for years.

Someone else's frustration would become my emergency.

And by the time the argument ended, I would have forgotten why I had made the decision in the first place.

I wasn't forgetting this time.

Dad shifted slightly.

I looked at him.

He gave me the same measured expression he'd worn when I first showed him the charge.

He hadn't seemed surprised then.

I understood why now.

The attempted payment wasn't proof of some complicated new authority Landon had acquired.

It was proof that he was still behaving according to an arrangement I had allowed to continue.

He expected the card to work.

He expected me to answer when it didn't.

And he expected his objections to matter more than the company's rules.

I had helped create that expectation.

That part belonged to me.

I couldn't blame Landon for every time I had chosen to retreat.

I had made those decisions myself.

Sometimes because I was tired.

Sometimes because I wanted a quiet evening.

Sometimes because I convinced myself another concession was a small price to pay for peace.

But the concessions had accumulated.

And now I was sitting with my father on the morning of my divorce, realizing that a legal ending hadn't automatically erased them.

I listened to Landon.

His voice still carried the same offense.

The same assumption that I owed him a solution.

I had heard that tone so many times.

What changed was my response to it.

I no longer believed his anger meant I had done something wrong.

I no longer believed every disagreement had to end with both of us feeling satisfied.

And I no longer believed that protecting the company required a personal apology.

I kept the phone against my ear.

My hand had stopped trembling.

I hadn't noticed it happening.

For once, I had said no and allowed the answer to remain no.

It wasn't a dramatic victory.

It was uncomfortable.

Ordinary.

And long overdue.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: My Father Had Seen the Problem for Years, but I Had to Admit How Often I Chose a Quiet Marriage Over Clear Financial Boundaries

I thought refusing Landon would make me feel free.
