7 – Hearing Tessa Behind Landon Made Me See the Same Old Financial Pattern Without the Excuses I Had Used Throughout Our Marriage

Tessa's voice came through the phone again.

She sounded annoyed.

I couldn't hear enough to know exactly what she was saying.

But the impatience was obvious.

Something was taking longer than expected.

I looked at the card notification.

I could make a reasonable guess about the source of the delay.

But I wasn't there.

I hadn't seen what Landon was buying.

I didn't know what he had told anyone at the club.

And I wasn't going to pretend I knew details the call hadn't given me.

What I did know was enough.

He had tried to use the company card.

The transaction had been declined.

Then he had called me demanding an explanation.

I could hear the anger in his voice.

That sequence didn't require much interpretation.

Landon was accustomed to having access.

He had expected it to continue.

And when it stopped, he treated the interruption as something I had done to him.

I thought about that phrase.

Done to him.

It was how so many of our financial disagreements had ended.

A decision I made to protect the business would somehow become a personal injury to my husband.

I would begin by discussing an account.

We would finish by discussing whether I cared about him.

I had participated in that pattern.

I couldn't blame every part of it on Landon.

He pushed.

I retreated.

Then I called my retreat a compromise.

That was the truth.

It was also a difficult thing to accept because I had genuinely believed I was doing the responsible thing for our relationship.

I didn't want our marriage to become a running argument over money.

I didn't want every trip or household expense to require a tense conversation.

I didn't want Landon to feel as though I saw him as an outsider.

So I let the supplementary card remain part of our arrangement.

I changed other things.

I introduced safeguards.

I moved certain expenses away from company accounts.

But the hardest decision stayed unfinished.

I never fully removed his access.

And now, on the very day our divorce was finalized, I was hearing the result.

Landon was not calling as someone surprised to learn that he had no role in the company.

He knew that already.

He was calling as someone who had lost something he expected to keep.

Dad had described that expectation earlier.

Some people didn't necessarily believe rules were meaningless.

They simply relied on someone else to make the consequences disappear.

I hadn't liked hearing it.

Now I couldn't stop thinking about it.

How many times had I cleaned up a disagreement by giving Landon what he wanted?

How many times had I protected the atmosphere at home instead of the boundary I had intended to establish?

How many times had I said it wasn't worth another fight?

I didn't have a number.

I only knew it had happened often enough for the pattern to feel normal.

I heard a glass touch a hard surface in the background.

Such a small sound.

Nothing important by itself.

But it reminded me where Landon was.

He was surrounded by the ordinary activity of a luxury club.

He wasn't sitting across from me trying to understand why the divorce had changed our financial arrangements.

He was demanding access while someone nearby grew impatient.

I felt a brief sting of humiliation.

It passed.

What remained was something simpler.

I didn't want to do this anymore.

I didn't want to explain the same facts until I became too exhausted to enforce them.

I didn't want to make protecting my company dependent on whether Landon was in a good mood.

And I didn't want to keep treating the end of a disagreement as proof that I had handled it well.

Sometimes an argument ended because I gave up.

That wasn't peace.

It was silence bought at my own expense.

I looked at Dad.

He had been right about one thing.

I had let Landon confuse the freedom to use something with the right to own it.

Maybe I had confused those things myself.

Not legally.

I knew who owned the company.

But emotionally, I had begun acting as though my husband's feelings about an account were just as important as the business's actual authority structure.

They weren't.

Landon had never held a directorship.

He had never owned shares.

He had never been an authorized signatory.

Those were not minor details.

They were the facts that defined his relationship to the business.

The supplementary card didn't change them.

Our marriage hadn't changed them.

And our divorce certainly hadn't given him a new claim.

I wondered whether Landon had ever understood how much effort I had spent trying to avoid these conversations.

Maybe he had.

Maybe he hadn't.

I couldn't answer that from where I sat.

But I knew what my own behavior had been.

I had delayed.

I had softened decisions.

I had made exceptions.

I had told myself each one was temporary.

And gradually, the arrangement had become something I struggled to withdraw without feeling guilty.

Now the guilt was still present.

But it wasn't controlling my answer.

That difference mattered.

I could feel bad about how the conversation was unfolding without deciding that I had to restore the card.

I could recognize Landon's anger without accepting responsibility for ending it.

I could hear Tessa in the background without allowing that embarrassment to push me into another concession.

Those were small changes.

But they were changes I could actually make.

I studied the notification once more.

The payment remained declined.

The card hadn't worked.

And for the first time, I wasn't ashamed of that.

I was ashamed of how long I had feared making it happen.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: I Had Spent
