5 – Landon Was Still on the Phone When I Realized His Anger Was Not About the Card but About Losing Control

I kept the phone against my ear.

Landon was still angry.

I could hear it in the way he breathed between words.

He had called expecting me to fix something.

Instead, I had told him the company card was no longer his to use.

That should have been the end of it.

But twelve years of marriage had taught me that Landon rarely accepted an answer simply because it was clear.

Especially when the answer was no.

I looked at my father.

Dad sat across from me with his hands resting on the table.

He wasn't reaching for my phone.

He wasn't telling me what to say.

He was letting me handle a conversation I should have been able to handle years earlier.

That made me uncomfortable.

I had become so used to defending my choices that having someone simply sit beside me felt strange.

Landon spoke again.

I listened without interrupting.

The noise from the luxury club continued behind him.

Music played.

Someone laughed.

A glass touched another glass.

And somewhere near him, Tessa sounded impatient.

I kept thinking about that.

The divorce had been finalized that morning.

Our marriage was officially over.

Yet Landon was spending time at a club, trying to use a company card I had provided during our marriage.

It wasn't the club itself that troubled me.

It was the assumption behind the attempted payment.

He had expected the card to work.

He had expected access to remain available.

And when it didn't, he had called me as though I owed him an explanation.

For years, I had accepted that kind of reaction.

I had even learned to prepare for it.

Before making a decision involving money, I would imagine how Landon might respond.

Would he accuse me of being controlling?

Would he ask whether I trusted him?

Would he turn the conversation into a test of our marriage?

Too often, those questions mattered more to me than whether the decision itself made sense.

That was difficult to admit.

I had built a business.

I understood accounts.

I understood responsibility.

I knew that access to company funds had to be controlled.

Yet when the person asking for access was my husband, I had behaved as though those rules were somehow less important.

I looked at the declined transaction again.

It was only a notification.

A few words on a screen.

But I kept returning to it because it showed something I hadn't managed to accomplish through years of arguments.

A boundary had held.

Landon had tried to spend money through the company card.

The payment hadn't gone through.

Nothing about his frustration changed that.

I heard Tessa's voice again.

I couldn't make out every word.

I didn't need to.

She wanted to know why there was a delay.

Landon apparently wanted the same thing.

I felt a familiar impulse to apologize.

That frightened me more than his anger.

I wasn't sorry for changing the PINs.

I wasn't sorry the payment had failed.

I wasn't sorry that a man with no formal authority over my company could no longer treat its card as his own.

Still, the urge to say sorry was there.

Twelve years.

That was a long time to practice making someone else's discomfort your responsibility.

I pressed my free hand against the table.

The surface was solid beneath my fingers.

Dad noticed the movement.

He didn't say anything.

I thought about what he had told me earlier.

Landon had become accustomed to financial privileges that never belonged to him.

I had allowed that to happen.

Not because I didn't understand the difference between personal and company money.

Because I had wanted peace.

And because Landon had learned that questioning his access could be made to sound like questioning the marriage.

I closed my eyes briefly.

The marriage was already over.

That argument had no place left to stand.

"I've explained the card," I said.

My voice was quieter than I expected.

I wasn't trying to sound powerful.

I was simply tired of explaining the same obvious thing.

The company belonged to me.

The responsibilities belonged to me.

And any access Landon had enjoyed existed because I had once allowed it.

He had never been an employee.

Never a director.

Never a shareholder.

Never someone authorized to spend company funds on his own authority.

Those facts were not new.

They had been true throughout the marriage.

The difference was that I was finally prepared to act on them.

I waited while Landon reacted.

My stomach tightened.

Some part of me still expected his anger to become something I would have to resolve.

I could almost feel myself reaching for the old words.

Maybe we could discuss it.

Maybe there was another arrangement.

Maybe I had moved too quickly.

I recognized those thoughts.

They were the same thoughts that had kept me from removing his access before.

And they had never solved anything.

They had only made the next confrontation easier to avoid.

I looked at Dad.

He met my eyes.

There was no victory in his expression.

He wasn't enjoying what was happening.

He knew how much the marriage had cost me.

And he knew the divorce papers hadn't automatically corrected the habits I had carried through it.

That morning, he had told me to change every PIN.

I had listened.

Now I was facing the part no security procedure could do for me.

I had to accept that Landon could be angry without being entitled to what he wanted.

It sounded simple.

It wasn't.

Not for me.

Not after twelve years of treating his disappointment as something dangerous.

The club noises continued.

I wondered whether Landon had expected me to restore the card before the conversation ended.

That would have been familiar.

He would complain.

I would explain.

He would become offended.

And I would find some way to make the immediate problem disappear.

The argument would end.

At least until the next one.

I had once mistaken that pattern for compromise.

Now I could see it more clearly.

One person expected access.

The other person was expected to protect his feelings about it.

I looked at the notification one last time.

Declined.

The word remained unchanged.

I hadn't reversed the decision.

And I wasn't going to.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Dad Let Me Face the Conversation Alone, and I Began to Understand
