19 – I Learned to Live With the Questions Without Pretending They Had Disappeared, and I Prepared for Whatever the Records Could Honestly Tell Me

After that meeting, I stopped expecting every week to bring a new development.

I kept my phone nearby.

I answered calls from unfamiliar numbers when I could.

I checked my messages and made sure the benefits office had my current contact information.

Beyond that, I returned to my usual routine.

The change did not happen all at once.

Some mornings, I woke up thinking about 1990 before I remembered anything else.

Other days, I went hours without considering the historical case.

I began to accept both kinds of days without judging myself for them.

I was not required to think about the investigation constantly to prove that it mattered.

Nor did a quiet afternoon mean I had stopped caring about the truth.

One evening, I took the notebook out of the drawer and read through the questions I had collected.

Some were about the child.

Some were about the death designation.

Others concerned the first official records connected to my identity.

I noticed that I had written the same question in different ways over time.

At first, I had asked, Could I be the child who disappeared?

Later, I had asked, What would prove whether I am the child?

The second question was more useful.

The first had invited me to imagine possibilities.

The second asked what evidence could distinguish them.

I crossed out the earlier wording and left the later question in place.

I did not erase it because the fear had gone away.

I erased it because I had learned to ask the question in a way that could lead to a verifiable answer.

Then I reviewed the dates I had written down.

I checked the reference numbers against the documents I had kept.

I made sure the notes from my conversations with Marcus were clear enough that I would not confuse an explanation of a possible process with a confirmed finding.

I had become careful about language.

Words such as might, could, and has been established no longer seemed like small details.

They determined whether I was recording a fact or a possibility.

I wanted to get that right.

The following week, I had an ordinary problem at work that required most of my attention.

I dealt with it, spoke to the people involved, and completed the necessary tasks.

When I came home, I felt tired in the familiar way that comes from a long day.

I made dinner and sat at the kitchen table.

For a moment, I looked toward the drawer where I kept the documents.

Then I turned back to my meal.

There was nothing new to examine.

I had already done what I could with the records I possessed.

I did not need to repeat the same search simply because I was uncomfortable with the wait.

That realization gave me some room to breathe.

I also began thinking about what I would do if the investigation reached an answer that was different from what I expected.

I did not try to predict what that answer would be.

Instead, I considered the practical questions that would follow any verified finding.

What exactly had been established?

Which records supported it?

Which parts remained uncertain?

Would any correction be necessary?

What process would I need to follow?

Those questions were useful because they did not depend on guessing the result.

They could guide me regardless of what the review eventually found.

I wrote them on the last page of my notebook.

Then I put the notebook away.

A few days later, I received no call from Marcus.

I did not interpret the silence as a good sign or a bad one.

I had no evidence for either conclusion.

I continued with my work and made plans for the weekend.

I bought groceries, cleaned the kitchen, and took care of a few tasks I had postponed.

The house looked much the same as it had before I first visited the benefits office.

The same chair stood near the table.

The same drawer held my papers.

The same small stack of mail waited beside the counter.

I found something reassuring in those familiar details.

The investigation had changed my understanding of what I knew about myself, but it had not changed every part of my life.

I could still make plans.

I could still keep promises.

I could still decide what to do with an ordinary Saturday.

I did not need to resolve the entire past before I was allowed to live in the present.

On Sunday afternoon, I took a walk and thought about the people I had contacted.

I had asked for memories, not confessions.

I had received uncertainty, not evidence of deception.

I had no reason to turn those conversations into accusations.

If someone later remembered a specific detail, I could listen and record it carefully.

Until then, I would not assume that a person who could not remember the beginning of my identity records knew more than they had told me.

That was another lesson I had learned from the case.

A missing answer was not proof of a hidden answer.

Sometimes a person simply did not know.

Sometimes a document was unavailable.

Sometimes the available information could establish one fact but not another.

Those possibilities were frustrating, but they were real.

When I returned home, I opened the drawer and placed the notebook beside the envelope.

I checked the handwritten label once more.

The words Identity Records were still visible on the front.

I had once thought the envelope might contain the key to the entire mystery.

Now I understood that it contained only the papers I had managed to keep.

They were valuable because they showed what had been recorded about me at particular times.

They were not required to explain every part of my history.

I closed the drawer.

For the first time, I left the notebook there without planning when I would take it out again.

I would wait for verified information from Marcus.

If he needed something from me, I would respond.

If he had a finding to share, I would ask him to explain the evidence.

If the review remained incomplete, I would continue to live with the questions while keeping them separate from what I knew.

I could not choose the answer.

I could choose how honestly I approached it.

That evening, I went to bed without checking my phone one last time.

The case remained unresolved.

But I no longer felt that every moment of my life had to be spent waiting for it.
