I don't have a verified finding today that resolves the historical connection."

I felt disappointment, but it was not as sharp as it had been during our earlier meetings.

"All right," I said.

"The review remains focused on understanding the record and determining what can be supported by the available information."

"Have you identified anything I need to correct or provide?"

"Not at this time."

I took out my notebook.

"I have a question about the next step."

"Go ahead."

"If the review hasn't established whether the historical child is me, what is the next thing that can actually be checked?"

Marcus considered the question.

"The next step depends on what relevant records can be located and verified. We need to establish what the historical file supports and how that information relates to the identity record connected to your number."

"Is that something you can continue examining without me providing more documents?"

"At this point, yes. If we need something from you, I'll explain what it is."

I wrote down his answer.

I wanted to be certain I understood the difference between the investigation continuing and a conclusion being reached.

The first could happen without producing an immediate answer for me.

The second required evidence that supported a particular finding.

"Can you tell me whether the historical record has been changed since this review began?" I asked.

"I don't have a confirmed update about a change that I can share with you."

"So we shouldn't assume anything has been corrected."

"Correct."

I nodded.

That was useful, even though it was not encouraging.

I had begun to imagine the record as something that might be quietly fixed while I waited.

But Marcus had not said that any correction had occurred.

I could not treat the absence of an update as proof that the problem had been solved behind the scenes.

I turned to another page.

"I also want to make sure I understand something from our earlier meetings. You said you had no basis to accuse me of knowingly using a false identity."

"That remains my position based on the information available to me."

"Does the historical connection, by itself, mean I've done something wrong?"

"No. A connection in a record is not, by itself, proof that you knowingly did anything improper."

I felt my shoulders loosen.

I had not realized how much tension I had been carrying around that question.

I knew I had not intentionally used someone else's identity.

But hearing Marcus distinguish the historical discrepancy from an accusation mattered.

It gave me a clear answer about what the information did not establish.

I thanked him.

He nodded and waited for my next question.

I looked at the notebook for a moment before speaking.

"I want the investigation to continue. I also need to know how to live while it does."

Marcus listened without interrupting.

"I can't give you a timeline or promise a particular outcome," he said. "But I can explain any verified information that becomes available and tell you what steps are appropriate."

"That's all I'm asking for."

I meant it, although part of me still wanted more.

I wanted him to name the child.

I wanted him to explain the death designation.

I wanted to know why my number was connected to the case.

I wanted a single account that would make the years before my first meeting with him fall into place.

But none of those things could be produced simply because I asked for them.

I had spent enough time trying to force the gaps into a pattern.

Now I wanted the review to establish whatever it could establish, even if the result was slower and less complete than I hoped.

Before we finished, Marcus asked whether I had found any additional documents.

"No. I reviewed everything I have and organized it by date."

"Please continue keeping the originals safe."

"I will."

"If you locate anything else that may be relevant, let me know before submitting it."

"I understand."

He closed the folder.

There was no dramatic announcement and no new document placed in front of me.

The conversation ended in the same quiet way our previous meetings had ended.

I stood, thanked him, and left the office.

In the hallway, I passed the reception desk and walked through the entrance into the afternoon air.

I stopped beside the building for a moment.

I had once believed that the most important part of this process would be the moment I learned the truth.

I now understood that there were other important parts.

There was the difference between a suspicion and a finding.

There was the care needed to preserve the records I already possessed.

There was the responsibility to ask questions without putting words into another person's memory.

And there was the patience required to let an investigation proceed without inventing its conclusion.

None of those things answered the question of who the child was.

None explained why the death designation had been entered.

But they helped me understand how I could continue seeking answers without losing sight of what was known.

When I reached my car, I put the notebook on the passenger seat.

I did not open it immediately.

Instead, I started the engine and drove home.

That evening, I placed the notebook and the envelope of records back in the drawer.

I checked that the papers were dry and properly arranged.

Then I closed the drawer.

I did not feel that the matter was finished.

It was not.

I still wanted to know what had happened in 1990 and how that historical case had become connected to my Social Security number.

I still wanted to understand where my own identity record began.

Those questions remained with me.

But I no longer believed that I had to answer them alone, in my kitchen, by studying old papers until they seemed to reveal something they could not prove.

The review had to continue through the appropriate process.

If evidence emerged, I would examine it.

If Marcus needed more information from me, I would provide what I could.

If the record contained an error, I would ask how it could be corrected.

And if some questions remained unanswered, I would face that uncertainty honestly rather than filling it with a story of my own.

For now, I had done what I could.

I had asked the questions.

I had preserved the documents.

I had cooperated with the review.

The rest depended on information I did not yet have.

I turned off the kitchen light and went to bed.

The case was still open.

So was the question of my identity.

I could not settle either one that night, and I no longer pretended that I could.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: I Waited for the Historical Review to Produce Something Verifiable, While Trying Not to Let an Unanswered Question Become My Whole Life

Marcus scheduled our next conversation for the following week.
