15 – I Began to Accept That the Review Might Leave Some Questions Open, but I Still Needed to Know What Had Happened to the Record

I went several days without contacting the benefits office.

It was not because I had stopped caring.

I had simply reached the point where another call would not give me anything new to ask.

Marcus had explained what he could verify and why he would not make promises about the outcome.

I had written down the questions that remained.

Now I needed to wait for information that might answer them.

Waiting was harder than I expected.

When I was busy, I could put the case aside for hours.

When the house became quiet, my thoughts returned to the same questions.

Who was the child?

What had happened in 1990?

Why was the death designation part of the record?

And how had my Social Security number become connected to it?

I tried to approach those questions one at a time.

The first question concerned the historical child.

I did not know the child's name, age, or circumstances beyond the fact that the case involved a disappearance in 1990.

I could not responsibly invent those details.

The second question concerned what happened after the disappearance.

The record contained a death designation, but Marcus had not confirmed what evidence supported it.

That distinction remained important.

The third question concerned my own identity.

I had used the same name and number through the parts of my life I could document, but I had not found the earliest record establishing how they were connected.

The final question concerned the link between the historical case and my number.

That was the issue that had brought me into the office in the first place.

I wrote each question on a separate line.

Then I added a note beneath them.

Do not assume that one answer will automatically answer the others.

I left the notebook open on the table while I made coffee.

The sentence seemed obvious, but it changed the way I thought about the case.

I had been trying to solve the entire problem with one discovery.

If I learned the child's name, I thought, I would know whether the child was me.

If I knew why the child had been declared dead, I thought, I would understand why the record was connected to my number.

But neither conclusion was guaranteed.

The investigation might identify the child without establishing the cause of the discrepancy.

It might clarify the record without explaining every part of my early life.

I needed to let the evidence determine the order in which the questions could be answered.

That afternoon, I reviewed the list of documents I had already organized.

I checked that the originals were stored safely and that my copies were not mixed with unrelated paperwork.

I made sure the notebook contained the dates and reference numbers I had written down.

Then I put everything away.

I did not want to spend every evening reopening the same papers.

There was no reason to believe that the answer would suddenly appear because I examined a document for the tenth time.

I returned to my routine.

At work, I focused on the tasks in front of me.

At home, I cooked, cleaned, and handled the small responsibilities I had postponed during the first days of the investigation.

I also stopped checking my phone every few minutes to see whether Marcus had called.

If he had information to share, he knew how to reach me.

I did not need to turn every quiet hour into a sign that something had gone wrong.

One evening, I found myself thinking about how easily a person could become defined by a single unanswered question.

Before this began, I had understood myself through the ordinary facts of my life.

I knew where I worked.

I knew the people I spoke with.

I knew the obligations I had accepted and the choices I had made.

The historical record had not erased those things.

It had raised a question about the connection between my identity and an older case.

That question mattered deeply, but it did not make every other part of my life meaningless.

I could still take responsibility for my actions.

I could still honor my commitments.

I could still make decisions based on what I knew.

I did not have to pretend the uncertainty was small.

I only had to stop allowing it to replace everything else.

A few days later, I received a call from the benefits office.

When I saw the number, I answered immediately.

The person on the line identified the office and asked to confirm that I was available for a future conversation with Marcus.

I said I was.

The caller explained that Marcus would contact me when he was ready to discuss the next appropriate step.

I asked whether there was anything I needed to prepare.

There was nothing additional I needed to provide at that moment.

I thanked the caller and ended the conversation.

It was a brief call.

It contained no new finding about the child and no explanation for the death designation.

Still, it confirmed that I remained reachable through the process and that I had not been forgotten.

I wrote the date in my notebook.

Then I added a short note: No new information provided.

I did not write that the investigation had failed.

I did not write that an answer was close.

I recorded only what had happened.

That small habit helped me more than I expected.

It gave me a way to preserve the facts without adding my fears to them.

Over the following days, I continued to think about the possibility that the review might not answer everything.

I did not become comfortable with it.

I still wanted a clear account of what had happened.

I wanted to understand why a child had been recorded as dead and why that record was connected to my number.

I wanted to know whether my own history had been recorded correctly.

Those wishes had not changed.

What changed was my understanding of what I could demand from the evidence.

I could ask for the truth to be examined carefully.

I could ask for any verified findings to be explained.

I could ask what steps were available if an error was established.

But I could not require a missing document to exist or force an old record to contain information that had never been preserved.

I could not make uncertainty disappear by refusing to acknowledge it.

When I met with Marcus again, I intended to ask about the progress of the review.

I would listen carefully to what he could confirm.

If there was nothing new, I would ask whether there was a reasonable next step.

Then I would return to my life and wait for whatever came next.

That was not the ending I wanted.

It was the only honest plan I had.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: When I Met Marcus Again, I Asked for the Next Verifiable Step Instead of
