The specific records available will determine what can be assessed."

"So the answer depends on what survived."

"Among other things, yes."

I looked at the notebook.

The words seemed straightforward, but the implications were difficult.

A record could have been created decades earlier.

It could have been transferred, copied, amended, or separated from other documents.

The people who originally handled it might no longer be available to explain what they did.

I could not assume that every missing detail had been deliberately removed.

I also could not assume that the existing record contained the full story.

"Could the review establish that the historical connection is wrong without explaining why it happened?" I asked.

"That is possible in principle. A discrepancy can sometimes be identified even when the original cause cannot be established."

"And if you can establish the connection but not the reason?"

"Then we would have to distinguish the verified connection from the unanswered questions about how it arose."

I leaned forward.

"That's what worries me. I don't want someone to tell me the number is connected to the case and then leave me to guess what that means about my life."

Marcus nodded slowly.

"I understand. The purpose of the review is to determine what the available evidence supports. It would not be responsible to fill in the gaps with an explanation we cannot verify."

I let out a long breath.

For weeks, I had been afraid that the truth would arrive as one terrible answer.

I had imagined a moment when someone would open a file, point to a page, and explain everything that had happened to me.

Marcus was telling me that the result might not be so neat.

Some questions might be answered.

Others might remain open.

I did not like that possibility, but I needed to prepare for it.

I turned to the next question in my notebook.

"If the review finds that the number was connected to the wrong person, would that automatically change my current records?"

"Any correction would have to follow the appropriate procedures. A finding about a historical record and a correction to current records are related questions, but they aren't necessarily the same step."

"Would I be told what I need to do?"

"If a correction is warranted, the process and any requirements should be explained to you."

I marked the answer in my notebook.

I was not trying to create a record of every word Marcus said.

I wanted to remember the difference between what he had confirmed and what he had described as a possibility.

The distinction was becoming important to me.

I asked whether the investigation had reached a point where he could say anything more about the child.

Marcus shook his head.

"I don't have a verified update that I can responsibly share today."

"Has nothing changed?"

"I didn't say that. I said I don't have a verified update I can share with you today."

I paused.

The difference mattered.

I had been treating every meeting without a new answer as evidence that nothing was happening.

But I had no way to know how much work had been done between appointments.

Marcus could be examining records I had never seen.

He could be waiting for information that had not arrived.

Or the review might have made little progress.

I did not know which was true, and I could not use my frustration as a measure of the investigation's progress.

"Is there anything you need me to clarify?" I asked.

"Not at this point. If we need additional information from you, I'll explain what is needed and why."

I closed my notebook.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

"What if the review never establishes the whole truth?"

Marcus did not offer a quick reassurance.

"I can't predict that outcome," he said. "The records may support a clear answer, or they may leave some questions unresolved. I don't want to promise you more than the process can deliver."

I stared at the edge of the desk.

It was not the answer I wanted.

It was the first answer that made me consider what I would do if certainty never came.

I had been waiting for an explanation before allowing myself to think about the rest of my life.

I had treated the investigation as a door that had to open before I could move forward.

But I could not control whether the records were complete.

I could control how I responded to what was actually established.

"I want to cooperate with the review," I said. "I also want to know when something is a fact and when it is only a possibility."

"That is a reasonable expectation."

"Even if the facts aren't what I hope they are."

"Especially then."

I nodded.

The conversation had not brought me closer to knowing who the child was.

It had brought me closer to understanding how the answer would need to be established.

I thanked Marcus for explaining the process as clearly as he could.

He reminded me to keep my documents safe and contact him if I found anything relevant.

Then I left.

On the drive home, I thought about the word proof.

I had used it as though it were a single thing that would settle every question at once.

Now I understood that proof had limits.

A document could establish one date without explaining another.

A record could show that information had been entered without revealing why it had been entered.

A number could connect two records without proving that the people described in them were the same person.

I could not ask one piece of evidence to answer questions it was not capable of answering.

When I reached home, I put my notebook beside the envelope.

I did not open either one.

Instead, I made dinner and spent the evening doing ordinary things.

The case was still waiting for an answer.

So was my life.

I was beginning to understand that I did not have to abandon one in order to keep living the other.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: I Began to Accept That the Review Might Leave Some Questions Open, but I Still Needed to Know What Had Happened to the Record

The next time I met with Marcus, I brought no new documents.
