"I went through everything I have," I said. "I also spoke with someone who knew me when I was younger."<\/p>\n
"Did you learn anything relevant?"<\/p>\n
"Not much. They remembered the name I used, but they couldn't tell me when my records were first established."<\/p>\n
Marcus nodded.<\/p>\n
"That is still useful context, although it doesn't resolve the discrepancy."<\/p>\n
"I know."<\/p>\n
I took out my notebook.<\/p>\n
"I have a few questions about what the historical record can actually tell us."<\/p>\n
"Go ahead."<\/p>\n
I looked at the first line I had written.<\/p>\n
"Can a record show that a child disappeared without explaining what happened afterward?"<\/p>\n

"And a death designation?"<\/p>\n

"I don't want to imply that I have verified information when I haven't. There are also limits on what I can disclose about a restricted historical case. Both concerns matter."<\/p>\n
I appreciated the directness of his answer.<\/p>\n
For the first time, I understood that there were two separate limits.<\/p>\n
Some information might not yet be known.<\/p>\n
Other information might exist but require a proper process before it could be shared.<\/p>\n
From my side of the desk, both limits felt like silence.<\/p>\n
They were not necessarily the same thing.<\/p>\n
I turned to another page in my notebook.<\/p>\n
"What would connect the historical child to me beyond the number?"<\/p>\n

I was tired of hearing that nothing had been established, but I could no longer claim that Marcus was refusing to answer questions he had already resolved.<\/p>\n

I did not have to like that answer to understand it.<\/p>\n
"What happens next?" I asked.<\/p>\n
"The review continues. If additional information becomes available, it will need to be checked against the records already examined."<\/p>\n
"Will I be told when that happens?"<\/p>\n
"If the information is relevant to your identity discrepancy and can be shared with you, I'll explain the next steps."<\/p>\n
"Can I do anything else to help?"<\/p>\n
"For now, keep your original documents safe. If you find something that may be relevant, contact me before sending it. We can determine the appropriate way to submit it."<\/p>\n
I nodded.<\/p>\n
I had already gathered everything I could find, but I understood why he wanted the documents preserved carefully.<\/p>\n
If an original paper became damaged or separated from its context, it might become harder to interpret.<\/p>\n
I asked whether I should continue contacting people from my past.<\/p>\n
"You can speak with people who may remember your early records," Marcus said. "Just be careful to distinguish what they actually remember from what they infer after hearing about the case."<\/p>\n
"I've been trying to do that."<\/p>\n
"That is the right approach."<\/p>\n
His answer reassured me more than I expected.<\/p>\n

Marcus did not tell me to stop asking questions.<\/p>\n
He told me to keep the questions separate from the conclusions.<\/p>\n

"If an error is established, the appropriate correction process can be explained. But we should not assume the outcome before the review is complete."<\/p>\n
"I understand."<\/p>\n
This time, I meant it.<\/p>\n
I stood and collected my bag.<\/p>\n
Marcus walked me to the doorway.<\/p>\n
"I know waiting is difficult," he said. "I don't want you to mistake caution for a lack of concern."<\/p>\n
"I don't think you're ignoring it."<\/p>\n
"Good."<\/p>\n
"I just want to know who I am."<\/p>\n
He looked at me steadily.<\/p>\n

I left the office and walked toward the parking lot.<\/p>\n
The sky had cleared, and sunlight fell across the rows of parked cars. For a few seconds, I stood beside mine and let the warmth reach my face.<\/p>\n

I still did not know the child's name, the full circumstances of the disappearance, or the reason my Social Security number was connected to the historical record.<\/p>\n
