The remaining details need to be examined before I can give you a complete answer."

I took a breath.

It was frustrating, but at least I understood the distinction.

I had been asking him to give me a final conclusion when he was still working through the evidence.

That didn't make the waiting easier.

It made the process clearer.

I asked whether my application could move forward while the review continued.

He explained that the identity issue had to be addressed first.

I looked down at my hands.

The medical insurance problem that had brought me there still existed.

Whatever was happening with my records, I hadn't stopped needing help.

I told him that.

"I understand," he said. "I know this isn't why you came here."

I nodded.

For a moment, I felt embarrassed.

I had spent so much time thinking about the historical case that I had almost forgotten the ordinary reason I needed the office's help in the first place.

I was a working man trying to manage his health and expenses.

I hadn't come looking for a mystery.

The mystery had found me.

I asked whether he could tell me anything more about the circumstances surrounding the child's disappearance.

Marcus said he couldn't provide a full account yet.

I was quiet for a few seconds.

Then I asked a different question.

"What does the record actually prove?"

He looked up.

I repeated it.

"Not what somebody thinks it means. Not what might have happened. What can you prove from the information in front of you?"

Marcus seemed to consider the question carefully.

He explained that the records established a historical case involving a missing child and a death designation from 1990.

They also established a connection between that case and the Social Security number I had supplied.

Those were the facts he could discuss with me at that point.

I listened.

I wanted more, but I could no longer pretend those facts were small.

A missing child had been recorded as dead.

The number I had used since childhood was connected to that record.

Those were not answers to the central question.

They were reasons to keep investigating it.

I asked whether the file contained a confirmed identity for the child.

Marcus said he needed to finish reviewing the details before he could answer.

I nodded slowly.

I had begun to recognize the limits of what he could tell me.

I didn't like those limits.

But I no longer mistook them for proof that he was trying to hurt me.

I looked at the folder again.

"Is there any reason to believe I've done something wrong?"

"No," Marcus said. "Nothing you've told me gives me a reason to believe that."

I let my shoulders relax.

I hadn't realized how tightly I had been holding myself.

I thanked him.

He said he would continue the review and contact me when he could provide a more definite explanation.

I asked whether there was anything else I should do.

He said to keep my documents safe and respond if the office needed further information.

I agreed.

Before I stood, I looked at him one last time.

"I need you to understand something."

He waited.

"I can deal with a mistake. I can deal with paperwork. What I can't do is spend the rest of my life wondering whether everything I was told about myself was a lie."

Marcus listened without interrupting.

"I understand why you need an answer," he said.

I wanted to believe him.

I couldn't know what the final answer would be, but I could tell he understood the question had become more than an administrative problem.

I gathered my documents and left the room.

The waiting area was busy.

People stood in line, checked forms, and spoke quietly to the clerks.

I walked past them and went outside.

The day was bright, and the parking lot looked exactly as it had during my earlier visits.

My truck sat where I had left it.

I opened the door and placed the papers on the passenger seat.

Then I sat behind the wheel.

I thought about the question I had asked Marcus.

What could the record prove?

It was the first question I had asked that didn't require me to imagine the worst.

I didn't have to decide whether my family had lied.

I didn't have to decide whether the child had survived.

I didn't have to decide what my future would look like.

Not yet.

I needed to know what the evidence actually showed.

That was a smaller task, even if the answer might still change everything.

I started the truck.

On the drive home, I passed the places I saw every day.

The road was familiar.

The traffic was ordinary.

The people walking along the sidewalk had their own worries, none of which they could see in my face.

I wondered how many of them carried questions they had never told anyone.

I had always assumed that the facts of my life were settled.

Now I knew there was a part of my history I didn't understand.

I couldn't undo that knowledge.

I could only keep going until I learned what it meant.

That evening, I put the documents back in the drawer.

I didn't spread them across the table.

I didn't check every date again.

Instead, I wrote one sentence in my notebook.

Find out what the record proves.

I read it twice.

Then I closed the notebook.

For the first time since the clerk had looked at her computer and told me I was dead, I had a clear next step.

I would wait for Marcus to finish the review.

I would answer whatever questions he asked.

And I would not let fear turn unanswered questions into facts.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Returned to Marcus With the Same Questions, but This Time I Wanted to Understand the Difference Between a Record and the Truth

By the time I spoke with Marcus again, I had stopped expecting the next conversation to settle everything.
