7 – I Had Built My Adult Life Around the Belief That I Knew Where I Came From, Until One Unanswered Question Made That Belief Feel Fragile

I used to think the hardest part of growing up was learning to live without help.

I had been wrong.

The harder part was discovering that independence couldn't protect me from everything that had happened before I was old enough to choose.

I could pay my rent.

I could keep a job.

I could fix small problems with my truck and stretch a paycheck when I had to.

None of those things could tell me who I had been in 1990.

I kept waiting for Marcus to call.

I didn't want to admit how much the waiting affected me.

Every time my phone rang, I checked the screen.

Every time an unfamiliar number appeared, I wondered whether it was the office.

Most calls were ordinary.

Work.

Bills.

People asking about things I could answer.

I began to resent how easily the world continued while I struggled with a question that seemed to reach backward through my entire life.

I still had responsibilities.

I still had to show up and do my job.

I couldn't tell everyone that I was having trouble concentrating because a government office had connected my identity to a dead child.

So I kept quiet.

I had become good at that long before I understood why.

One evening, I returned to the drawer where I had put my documents.

I took them out again.

I wasn't looking for anything specific.

I wanted to see whether I had overlooked a detail because I had been too upset to notice it.

I checked the names.

The dates.

The identifying numbers.

Nothing changed.

The papers said what they had said before.

I returned them to the drawer.

Then I sat at the table and thought about my family.

I had spent years trying to make sense of their behavior.

There had always been a distance between us that I couldn't explain.

I remembered how often I had tried to earn a kind word by doing what was expected of me.

I remembered how quickly those efforts could be dismissed.

When I finally left home at eighteen, I told myself I was done asking for approval.

I would work.

I would support myself.

I would stop waiting for people to give me something they had never seemed willing to offer.

That decision had helped me survive.

But it had also made it easy to avoid asking difficult questions.

I hadn't wanted to return to the past because I thought I already understood it.

My family had not made me feel welcome.

That was enough.

Now I wondered whether I had mistaken the result for the reason.

I didn't know.

And I wasn't going to turn suspicion into a story just because I needed one.

I reminded myself that Marcus had not accused anyone.

He hadn't told me that my family had done anything wrong.

He had only explained that a historical record was connected to my Social Security number.

Everything beyond that remained uncertain.

I needed to remember that.

The next day, I called the office to ask whether there was any update.

Marcus was available.

He told me the review was still underway.

I asked whether he could give me a time frame.

He said he couldn't promise a date.

I was disappointed, but I tried not to take it out on him.

"Is there anything else you need from me?"

"Not at the moment."

I thanked him and ended the call.

I stared at my phone after the screen went dark.

I had wanted to hear that the case was almost resolved.

Instead, I was left with another stretch of uncertainty.

I went to work and tried to put it aside.

That afternoon, I made a mistake on a routine task.

It wasn't serious, but my supervisor asked whether something was distracting me.

I said I hadn't slept well.

That was true.

It just wasn't the whole truth.

I corrected the mistake and carried on.

On the way home, I stopped for groceries.

I stood in the aisle longer than necessary, trying to decide what to buy.

There was nothing wrong with the food.

Nothing wrong with the store.

I was simply tired of making ordinary choices while feeling as if the most basic fact about myself was unsettled.

I bought what I needed and drove home.

That night, I sat by the window with the lights off.

I thought about the boy I had been.

I tried to picture him at the age he would have been in 1990.

But I couldn't build a clear image.

I didn't know which memories belonged to that period or whether I remembered it accurately.

I had no reason to believe my memories were false.

I had no reason to assume they explained the historical file.

For the first time, I understood how little a person could know about the beginning of his own life.

We inherit names.

We inherit dates.

We inherit stories from adults who tell us where we came from.

Most of the time, we accept those things because we have no reason to question them.

I had accepted mine.

I had lived under the name Miller, used the number I was given, and built a life around the information I believed was true.

I had never asked for proof.

Why would I?

The following morning, I checked my phone before getting out of bed.

There was no message from Marcus.

I made coffee and stood at the kitchen counter.

The cup was warm in my hands.

I stared at it and tried to slow my thoughts.

I couldn't make the office move faster.

I couldn't force a record to explain itself.

All I could do was wait and remain available.

I hated that.

But I had learned that some problems couldn't be solved by pushing harder.

Sometimes the only useful thing a person could do was keep asking the right question.

Mine was simple.

Who had been declared dead in 1990?

And why was that death connected to me?

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: When I Returned
