Most of what I owned had followed me from one apartment to another because I needed it, not because it meant anything to me.

That evening, every sheet seemed important.

I checked the dates.

I checked the names.

I checked the numbers, even when I already knew what they said.

Nothing gave me an answer.

I sat back and rubbed my eyes.

The little pile of documents looked almost insulting after everything I had been told.

A lifetime of memories, reduced to a few pages that couldn't explain who I was.

I thought about calling someone from my family.

The idea made me uncomfortable.

I had spent years keeping my distance because every conversation seemed to remind me of what I hadn't received from them.

At eighteen, I had left home and learned to take care of myself.

I hadn't gone back looking for an apology.

I hadn't expected anyone to change.

But now I wondered whether I had left without understanding the most important thing about my own life.

I picked up the phone.

Then I put it down again.

What would I even ask?

Did you know I was supposed to be dead?

Had you ever heard of a missing child?

Did you give me a name that wasn't mine?

The questions sounded ridiculous when I imagined saying them aloud.

Still, I couldn't dismiss them.

I returned to the papers and examined them one more time.

There was nothing.

I slept badly again.

The following day, I went to work and tried to behave as if nothing had happened.

I answered when people spoke to me.

I did what I was supposed to do.

But whenever I had a quiet moment, I found myself thinking about Marcus and the folder on his desk.

I wanted to know what he had seen.

I wanted to know whether the information in that file could explain why my childhood had felt so unsettled.

Mostly, I wanted him to tell me that I had misunderstood something.

By the time I finished work, I knew I couldn't leave the matter alone.

I contacted the benefits office and asked whether there had been any progress.

I was told that Marcus was reviewing the case.

There was no new answer.

I thanked the person and ended the call.

It wasn't what I wanted to hear, but I had expected it.

The next morning, I gathered my documents again and returned to the office.

Marcus met me near the counter.

He looked tired, though I couldn't tell whether that had anything to do with my case.

He took me back to the private room.

I sat down before he could offer me a chair.

"Have you found anything?"

"I've been able to examine more of the historical information."

I waited.

He opened the folder.

"The discrepancy is not limited to a single incorrect entry."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What does that mean?"

"It means we need to look at the record as a whole rather than treat it as a simple clerical mistake."

I looked at the papers in front of him.

"Does it mean somebody did this deliberately?"

"I don't have enough evidence to tell you that."

I wanted to push him.

I wanted a name, a date, or something I could take home and understand.

Instead, I received another careful answer.

Marcus explained that the historical record contained a connection to a child who had disappeared in 1990.

The record also showed that the child had been declared dead.

The identity associated with that case had become linked to the Social Security number I had provided.

I listened without interrupting.

When he finished, I asked the question that had been bothering me since our first meeting.

"Was the child using my name?"

Marcus looked down at the file.

"I need to verify that detail before I can give you a reliable answer."

I nodded, though I wasn't satisfied.

Then I asked whether he had found anything about the child's family.

He said he was still reviewing the available information.

I studied his face.

I could tell he was holding back details, but I couldn't tell whether he was doing it because he was required to or because he didn't yet understand what they meant.

I decided not to accuse him of hiding something.

That wouldn't get me anywhere.

Instead, I asked him what he needed from me.

He said additional childhood records could help establish the connection between my present identity and the historical case.

I told him I would keep searching.

He made a note.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

I looked at the little American flag beside the window.

I had noticed it during both visits, but now I found myself staring at it as if it might remind me what the office was supposed to do.

It was a place where people came to settle problems with their records.

I had never imagined that the records themselves could become the problem.

Marcus closed the folder.

"I know this has been difficult."

I almost told him he had no idea.

But he wasn't the person who had made the record.

He was the person trying to explain it.

I kept my answer simple.

"It has been."

He nodded.

Then he said he would contact me when he had something more definite to share.

I left the office with no new document and no clear explanation.

Outside, I stood beside my truck for a moment.

The same question followed me.

Who had I been before I became the person I remembered?

I couldn't answer it.

I could only keep looking.

<a
