3 – A Restricted File Connected My Number to a Missing Child, and I Began to Question the One Part of My Past I Had Never Doubted

I kept hearing Marcus's question in my head.

Whether I was the child in the record.

He hadn't accused me of anything.

He hadn't told me I was lying.

But the distinction offered little comfort.

I had come to the office as a man asking for medical insurance.

I was now being asked to consider whether the government had once recorded me as a missing child and then declared me dead.

I didn't know how to make those facts fit inside a life I remembered living.

Marcus gave me a moment.

He didn't fill the silence with explanations.

I appreciated that, although I wouldn't have admitted it then.

Finally, I asked him what he could tell me about the case.

He explained that the record had been classified as a historical matter and that access was restricted.

He couldn't simply hand me every document in the file.

Some details needed to be verified before they could be discussed.

I asked what he meant by verified.

He said the office needed to establish whether the identity in the historical record matched the identity I was using now.

I told him my identity wasn't something I had borrowed.

It was mine.

He listened.

"I understand that's what you've believed your whole life."

The words made my stomach tighten.

"What does that mean?"

"It means I need to compare what you've told me with the original records."

I looked at the closed folder.

I wanted to open it myself.

I wanted to read every page and find the simple mistake that would end this conversation.

But I couldn't reach through a locked government system and correct a record just because I knew I was alive.

I had never felt so powerless.

Marcus asked whether I could provide any documents that established my identity during childhood.

I told him I would look.

He said that would help.

Then he explained that the case involved a child reported missing in 1990.

At some point, the child's record had been updated to reflect a death.

The Social Security number connected to that record was the same one I had given the clerk.

I listened carefully.

"Do you know how the child died?"

Marcus shook his head.

"I haven't established that information."

"Then how can the record say the child is dead?"

"That is part of what needs to be reviewed."

I pressed my palms against my knees.

I was trying to keep myself still.

The questions were coming faster than I could sort them.

A missing child.

A death record.

My Social Security number.

My own name.

I asked whether the child had been identified by the same name I used.

Marcus said he couldn't confirm that yet.

I asked whether the record included a birth date.

He said it did, but he needed to verify the connection before sharing further details.

I was beginning to understand that he wasn't going to give me the whole story in one conversation.

That made me angry.

It also forced me to recognize something I didn't want to admit.

He might not know the whole story himself.

I had spent most of my adult life believing that every problem could be solved if I found the right person and demanded a straight answer.

Sometimes that worked.

Sometimes it only made people defensive.

Marcus seemed determined to follow the process, even if the process left me sitting in a chair with no idea what my future looked like.

I asked whether the discrepancy could prevent me from getting medical insurance.

He said the office would need to resolve the identity issue before it could make a final determination.

I laughed once, without humor.

"So I came here for help, and now I can't even prove I'm the person I've always been."

He didn't pretend otherwise.

"I'm sorry."

I looked away.

That was the first time anyone in the office had apologized to me.

It wasn't much.

But I believed he meant it.

I asked what I should do next.

Marcus said I should gather whatever personal records I could find and avoid making assumptions until the historical file had been examined.

I wanted to know whether I should contact my family.

He paused.

"If you believe they may have documents relevant to your childhood, you can consider speaking with them."

I didn't tell him that my family was the last place I wanted to look for comfort.

At eighteen, I had learned what it felt like to be sent away without anyone asking whether I was ready.

The people who were supposed to help me become an adult had made it clear that I was on my own.

I had spent years building a life that didn't depend on them.

Now I was being told that the answers to my identity might be buried in the part of my past I had worked hardest to leave behind.

I stood.

Marcus asked whether I wanted to schedule another meeting.

I said I would contact the office after I had gathered my documents.

He gave me the information I needed to follow up.

Then he walked me back to the public area.

The television was still playing.

The child near the wall was gone.

A new group of people waited by the counter.

Nothing in the room had changed.

I had.

I stepped outside and stood beside my truck.

The afternoon air felt heavier than it had when I arrived.

I unlocked the driver's door but didn't get in.

I kept thinking about the number.

It had been part of my life for so long that I had stopped seeing it as something separate from myself.

It was printed on forms, attached to paychecks, and stored in databases I would never see.

I had trusted it because it had always worked.

Now it had opened a door into a history I didn't recognize.

I got into the truck and sat with the key in my hand.

I thought about calling someone.

There were people I knew from work, people who might listen if I told them something strange had happened.

But I couldn't imagine explaining it without sounding confused.

How did a man tell another man that an office had informed him he was dead?

How did he explain that the information might be connected to a missing child?

I started the engine.

Then I drove home.

The trip felt longer than usual.

I kept glancing at the road, then at the buildings passing outside my window.

I had driven those streets for years.

I knew where the potholes were.

I knew which intersections took too long to clear.

I knew where I could buy cheap groceries and where the gas was usually a few cents lower.

Those familiar details had always made my life feel solid.

That afternoon, they seemed strangely fragile.

When I reached my apartment, I left the engine running for another minute.

I wasn't ready to go inside.

I wanted to believe I could close the door behind me, eat something, and return to the problem in the morning.

But I knew I wouldn't sleep if I did that.

I turned off the engine and went upstairs.

My apartment was small.

There wasn't much furniture, and most of what I owned had been bought because it was affordable rather than because I liked it.

A kitchen table stood near the window.

My work clothes hung over the back of a chair.

Mail lay in a loose pile beside a cup containing several pens.

I looked at the room and tried to remember whether anything about it felt different.

It didn't.

The apartment was still mine.

My bills were still waiting.

The truck still needed maintenance.

I still had to work the next morning.

But now I wondered what would happen if the office couldn't resolve the discrepancy.

Would my employer question my records?

Would my bank accounts be affected?

Would I have trouble proving my identity when I needed to renew a document?

Marcus hadn't said any of those things would happen.

My mind was simply trying to find every possible way the problem could hurt me.

I sat at the table and pulled the mail closer.

There were bills, an advertisement, and a notice I had already opened.

None of it helped.

I pushed the papers aside and reached for a notebook.

I wrote down the questions I wanted Marcus to answer.

Who was the child?

Why had the child been declared dead?

What did the record say about the child's name?

How had my Social Security number become connected to that case?

I looked at the last question for a long time.

Then I added another.

What had my family known?

I didn't like that question.

It was the one that made the others feel personal.

I could blame a computer.

I could blame an old record.

I could even blame the government for keeping information I couldn't access.

But if my family knew something about the child in that file, the problem was no longer just a matter of paperwork.

It meant someone might have known a truth about me and allowed me to live without it.

I put down the pen.

For several minutes, I sat there without moving.

Then I picked up my phone and checked the time.

The office would be closed soon, and there was nothing else I could do that day.

I tried to eat.

I couldn't finish the meal.

Later, I lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling.

I remembered my childhood in pieces.

A school desk.

A kitchen where I tried not to get in anyone's way.

The feeling of being left out of conversations that stopped whenever I came near.

I had always thought those memories explained themselves.

Maybe I had simply been difficult to love.

Maybe my family had been tired of me.

Maybe I had expected too much from people who had little to give.

Those explanations had hurt, but I had learned to live with them.

Now I couldn't stop wondering whether I had misunderstood the beginning of my own life.

I didn't have proof of anything.

Only a folder I hadn't been allowed to read.

Only a man who had asked whether I was a missing child.

Only a record that said someone with my number had died in 1990.

And somehow, that was enough to make every old memory feel uncertain.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Marcus Asked Me to Return for a
