But I want straight answers."

He nodded.

We walked down a narrow hallway beyond the counter.

The sound of the waiting room faded behind us.

The office he opened was small and plain.

There was a desk, three chairs, and a metal filing cabinet against one wall.

A little American flag stood near the window.

The blinds were closed.

Marcus asked a security guard to remain outside.

Then he motioned toward a chair.

I stayed on my feet.

"I'd rather hear this standing up."

He accepted that without argument.

He placed the folder on the desk and opened it.

"My name is Marcus Cole. I oversee compliance matters for this regional benefits office."

"I heard you before."

"I know."

He took a moment before continuing.

"My job includes reviewing cases where federal identity records conflict with information provided by living applicants."

I folded my arms.

"And mine is one of those cases."

"Yes."

"Because someone made a mistake in 1990?"

He looked at me carefully.

"Possibly. But I can't tell you that yet."

That answer irritated me.

It also frightened me.

If it had been an ordinary mistake, I thought, he would have said so.

I asked what kind of record could make a living man appear dead.

Marcus explained that certain historical cases involved restricted files.

He couldn't discuss every detail before confirming the information.

I told him that sounded backward.

He agreed that it wasn't an easy process.

Then he turned the folder toward himself and began asking questions.

What was my full name?

What was my date of birth?

Where had I grown up?

Had I always used the same name?

Had I ever received a notice saying my Social Security number was invalid?

I answered each question as clearly as I could.

My name was Miller.

My number had remained the same for as long as I could remember.

I had never received a notice like this.

I had no reason to think anything about my identity was unusual.

He asked whether I had copies of my early records.

I said I might have some documents at home, but I couldn't promise what was there.

My family hadn't encouraged me to keep things.

By the time I was old enough to understand that papers mattered, I had already learned not to expect help from anyone.

Marcus wrote down my answers.

The scratch of his pen seemed unusually loud in that little room.

I watched him pause over a particular line.

"What does that say?"

He covered the page with his hand.

"It's part of the case information."

"About me?"

"About the identity connected to your number."

I leaned toward the desk.

"Those are supposed to be the same thing."

He looked up.

"That's the question we need to answer."

I stepped back.

I could feel my temper rising, but I knew anger wouldn't make the information clearer.

I had spent years getting into trouble for reacting too quickly.

Sometimes people treated a frustrated man as if his frustration proved he was guilty.

I wasn't going to give Marcus a reason to stop talking.

So I sat down.

He asked about my childhood.

Not the usual questions about where I went to school or whether I had siblings.

He wanted to know who had taken responsibility for my records.

Who had helped me obtain my first identification?

Who had signed the documents I needed as a teenager?

I told him what I could remember.

My family had handled most of the early paperwork.

I hadn't paid much attention to it.

When I got older, I used the information I had been given.

I had never questioned it because there had never been a reason to do so.

Marcus asked whether anyone had ever told me I was adopted.

I stared at him.

"No."

"Did anyone ever tell you that your birth records had been amended?"

"No."

"Did anyone ever explain a change in your name?"

I shook my head.

"My name has always been Miller."

He made another note.

I watched his hand.

For the first time, I wondered whether he was recording my answers because they were useful or because he was building a case against me.

I asked him directly.

"Am I being investigated for fraud?"

"No."

"Then what am I?"

He stopped writing.

"You're an applicant whose records contain a serious discrepancy."

I let out a short breath.

It wasn't relief.

It was exhaustion.

I had come there hoping someone would help me get medical insurance.

Now I was being questioned about a childhood I had barely wanted to revisit.

I told him about leaving home at eighteen.

I hadn't planned to share that part of my life, but he had asked about the years when I first became responsible for myself.

I explained that I had worked whatever jobs I could find.

I had learned to sign forms, keep receipts, and make sure employers paid me correctly.

I had never been the kind of person who could afford to ignore official letters.

Every missed payment had consequences.

Every mistake cost money.

I told him that my Social Security number had never caused trouble before.

Marcus listened.

Then he asked a question that made me look up sharply.

"Have you ever heard of a child disappearing in connection with your family?"

"No."

"Not even through a newspaper story or an old family conversation?"

"No."

He didn't push me.

That somehow made the question worse.

I tried to remember anything unusual from childhood.

A conversation that stopped when I entered a room.

A photograph nobody wanted to explain.

A relative whose name was never mentioned.

There were plenty of silences in my family.

But I couldn't turn those silences into evidence of anything.

I had spent years believing that my childhood was difficult because the people around me hadn't wanted me.

That was a painful explanation, but it was one I understood.

The possibility that something else had happened was harder to consider.

Marcus closed the folder halfway.

"I need you to understand that I haven't reached a conclusion about you."

"Then what have you reached a conclusion about?"

He hesitated.

"The record is real."

I stared at him.

"You're saying the paperwork exists."

"Yes."

"You're not saying it's correct."

"Not yet."

I rubbed my hands together.

They were rough from years of physical work.

There was a small cut near my thumb that I had forgotten about until I noticed it stinging.

I focused on that instead of the folder.

Marcus told me he needed to review the restricted case before he could explain the full connection.

I asked how long that would take.

He couldn't give me a precise answer.

I asked whether I could leave and come back.

He said I could, but he wanted to explain the next step first.

I felt trapped between two bad choices.

If I walked out, I might lose the only chance I had to understand what was happening.

If I stayed, I had to trust a stranger who was telling me that the government had recorded my death.

I had never been good at trusting people.

I had learned early that promises were easy to make and expensive to believe.

But I also knew that refusing to hear the truth wouldn't make it disappear.

I nodded toward the folder.

"Show me what you can."

Marcus opened it again.

He looked at the page for several seconds.

Then he turned it so I could see the heading.

The details below it were partly obscured by other papers, but one line stood out.

It referred to a child.

A child whose disappearance had been recorded in 1990.

I read the line twice.

Then I looked at Marcus.

"Why is this connected to my number?"

He didn't answer immediately.

He closed the folder and rested both hands on the desk.

"Because the records indicate that the child was also declared dead."

I felt the room grow smaller.

I had known that something was wrong.

I hadn't understood how wrong it might be.

The word child stayed with me.

I thought about the boy I had been.

The one who had learned not to ask for much.

The one who had grown up believing his past was ordinary enough, even if his family wasn't kind.

I looked back at Marcus.

"Are you telling me I was that child?"

He held my gaze.

"I'm telling you that we need to determine whether you are."

For the first time since entering the office, I had nothing to say.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: A Restricted File Connected My Number to a Missing Child, and I Began to Question
