The old house had been sold years ago, and I hadn't visited it since the sale.

“What makes you think it was there?”

Jennifer sat down.

“I remember Mom coming home one afternoon with a box. She told me it was something for the house, but she wouldn't let me carry it.”

“Was it the metal tin?”

“I think so. I remember the sound it made when she set it down. It was heavier than an empty box.”

She rubbed her forehead, trying to recover the memory.

“She took it upstairs. I followed her, and she told me to wait in the hall.”

“Did you see where she put it?”

“Not then. But later, when I was looking for a book, I saw it behind a loose panel in the upstairs cupboard.”

I looked at her.

“Why didn't you tell me before?”

“I didn't connect it to anything. I thought it was an old box of family papers.”

That made sense.

A childhood memory could remain hidden for years until something gave it a reason to return.

“Do you remember which cupboard?”

“The one in the small room at the back. It had shelves built into the wall.”

I knew the room.

It had been Jennifer's bedroom for several years before we moved. The cupboard had a narrow wooden panel that never sat flush against the frame.

I remembered trying to fix it with a screwdriver.

I had failed, then forgotten about it.

The house was now occupied by another family.

I did not want to turn up unannounced and ask to search their cupboards.

Instead, I called the woman who had bought it from us. She still lived in the area, and we had exchanged holiday cards for a while after the sale.

She answered after the fourth ring.

I explained that I was looking for an old family item that might have been left behind before the house changed hands.

She listened patiently.

“I'm afraid I don't remember seeing a tin,” she said. “But we haven't changed that cupboard much.”

I asked whether she would be comfortable letting me inspect the panel, provided it was convenient.

There was a pause.

“I suppose that would be all right,” she said. “Let me check with my husband and call you back.”

I thanked her.

Jennifer looked anxious after I put the phone down.

“What if it's gone?”

“Then it's gone.”

“But what if it was important?”

“Then we'll have to accept that we may not find it.”

She nodded, though I could see she wasn't satisfied.

Later that afternoon, the woman called back.

She said we could come by the following Saturday morning.

I thanked her and promised we would be brief.

The days until Saturday passed slowly.

I kept working on the records request, and Mr. Bennett informed me that he had contacted the trust's successor administrator. The administrator was reviewing the surviving files and would respond when the relevant documents had been located.

There was no promise of a quick answer.

I began to accept that the process would move at its own pace.

On Saturday, Jennifer and I drove to our old neighborhood.

The house looked smaller than I remembered.

The front garden had been replaced with gravel, and the porch had a new railing. But the oak tree near the sidewalk was still there, its lower branches reaching toward the street.

The woman met us at the door.

Her husband stood behind her, holding a small toolbox.

“It's good to see you again,” she said.

I thanked her for letting us visit.

We explained that we wanted to inspect the old cupboard panel, not remove anything that belonged to them.

She led us upstairs.

The small room was now used as an office. A desk stood beneath the window, and shelves filled the wall where Jennifer's bed had once been.

The cupboard remained in the corner.

I felt an unexpected wave of memory.

I could almost see Jennifer as a child, sitting on the floor with a book open in her lap. I remembered Eleanor calling her down for dinner and Jennifer asking for five more minutes.

The room had held ordinary days.

That was what made the hidden box feel so strange.

Jennifer pointed to the panel.

“That's the one.”

I examined the wood.

The panel was slightly loose along the right side. I used a small screwdriver from the toolbox to lift it carefully.

Behind it was a narrow cavity.

It was empty.

I looked deeper, feeling along the bottom with my fingertips.

There was dust, a small wooden splinter, and a dried leaf that must have been carried in years earlier.

No tin.

Jennifer's shoulders dropped.

“I was sure.”

“Memories aren't always exact.”

She looked at the empty space.

“Maybe Mom took it when we moved.”

“Maybe.”

The homeowner said she had never found anything hidden there.

We thanked her for allowing us to look.

Before we left, I glanced once more at the cupboard.

The empty space bothered me less than I expected.

It was evidence of where Eleanor might have stored something, not proof that she had hidden a particular document there.

That distinction mattered.

Outside, Jennifer stood beside the car.

“I feel foolish,” she said.

“Why?”

“Because I was so certain.”

“You remembered a real place. We checked it. That's not foolish.”

“But we found nothing.”

“We found that the space is empty now.”

She gave me a tired smile.

“You sound like Mr. Bennett.”

“He may be a good influence.”

We drove home by a different route, passing the old bakery where Eleanor used to buy bread.

Jennifer asked whether I thought the tin had contained the missing pages.

“I don't know,” I said. “It may have held something else entirely.”

“Could Martin have taken it?”

“Possibly. But we don't have evidence of that.”

She stared out the window.

“I wish we knew what happened to him.”

“So do I.”

When we arrived home, I placed the photograph of Eleanor holding the box beside the address book.

The old house had given us no object to examine, but it had helped us place the photograph in context.

Eleanor had been carrying the box during the same period as the property transfer.

That was a fact.

The contents remained unknown.

I added the visit to my notes, including the homeowner's name and the date we had checked the cupboard.

Then I closed the folder.

For the first time, I felt no urge to search another room or pull another shelf away from the wall.

We had reached the limit of what memory alone could give us.

The next step would have to come from records, not guesses.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Martin Hale Finally Answered a Question That Had Followed Eleanor for More Than Thirty Years

The photograph stayed on my desk for two days.
