It was thin and brittle, with a faded stamp in the corner.

The letter inside was typed, except for a short handwritten note at the bottom.

It described a disagreement over the handling of supporting records.

According to the letter, Eleanor had been asked to deliver a set of documents to Martin. She had refused until the trust's administrator confirmed in writing that the transfer was lawful and complete.

The letter did not accuse her of stealing anything.

It did not accuse Martin of fraud.

It showed a disagreement over who should hold the records and who had the right to see them.

At the bottom, Eleanor had written a single sentence.

I will not release the originals until every beneficiary has been accounted for.

I read it again.

Jennifer pressed her lips together.

“She was trying to make sure everyone was included.”

“That is what it sounds like.”

The letter referred to more than one beneficiary, but it did not list their names. It also mentioned an inventory that had never been attached to the file.

I asked the clerk whether the inventory had been located.

“Not so far,” she said. “There are several boxes still awaiting review.”

I thanked her.

We returned to the car and read the letter again.

I felt relief, but it was mixed with sadness.

For years, I had imagined that Eleanor's silence meant she did not trust me.

Now I could see another possibility.

She might have been trying to keep a dispute from spreading into our home.

She might have believed that telling me would make me part of something I could not help resolve.

That did not mean she had handled it well.

It did mean I had been wrong to assume that every hidden paper concealed a betrayal.

At home, I placed the letter beside the photograph.

I looked at the young man's face again.

If the man was Martin, the photograph had been taken before the property transfer. Perhaps it showed a friendship. Perhaps it showed a business connection. Perhaps it meant something entirely different.

I could no longer treat the photograph as proof of a relationship.

It was only a photograph.

That afternoon, Mr. Bennett called to discuss the archive letter.

He said it suggested that Eleanor had been trying to preserve a complete record for the trust's beneficiaries.

“Does that make her responsible for the missing pages?” I asked.

“It makes it possible that she removed or retained documents to prevent an incomplete transfer. But we cannot establish that from this letter alone.”

“Could Martin have taken the pages?”

“He could have. So could someone else. We need the inventory or another record identifying what was removed.”

I looked at the green notebook.

The cut edges seemed sharper now.

I had spent days imagining Eleanor cutting out pages because she wanted to hide something from me.

She might have removed them for an entirely different reason.

Or she might have done so for reasons I still didn't understand.

The only responsible answer was that we did not know.

Mr. Bennett asked whether I wanted him to contact the trust's successor administrator.

I agreed.

He explained that the process might take time, especially if the trust had been dissolved or its records transferred.

I told him I understood.

When I ended the call, I found Jennifer in the living room, looking through the family photo albums.

She had opened the album from the years before she started school.

There were pictures of Eleanor holding Jennifer as a baby, standing beside the garden, and sitting at the kitchen table with a cake she had baked from scratch.

Jennifer turned one page and stopped.

“Look at this.”

The photograph showed Eleanor outside a small building. She was holding a folder under one arm, and a man stood beside her near the doorway.

The image was grainy.

The man's face was partly turned away.

But he wore a dark wool coat.

I brought the album closer to the lamp.

“Where was this taken?”

“I don't know. It might have been in town.”

I checked the back.

Eleanor had written a date, but no location.

The date was close to the one on the property-transfer record.

I felt a familiar urge to declare that we had found Martin.

Instead, I wrote down the date and placed a small paper marker beside the photograph.

“We should show this to Mr. Bennett,” I said. “But we shouldn't assume we know who the man is.”

Jennifer nodded.

She kept turning pages.

There were other photographs from the same period, most of them ordinary. A picnic. A birthday dinner. Eleanor standing beside our old car.

Then we found a picture of Eleanor at home, holding a small metal box.

It was barely visible on the edge of the photograph, partly hidden by her arm.

Jennifer leaned forward.

“That could be the tin I remember.”

“It could.”

The photograph did not show what was inside the box.

It did not even prove that the box had anything to do with the papers.

Still, it gave us another detail to preserve.

I scanned the photograph and added it to the folder.

That evening, I found myself thinking about the sentence Eleanor had written.

I will not release the originals until every beneficiary has been accounted for.

It was not the language of someone trying to erase a person.

It was the language of someone insisting that a process be completed.

I wished she had trusted me enough to explain it.

But I also understood that trust could be complicated when a person believed that speaking might expose someone else to harm.

I closed the album and returned it to the shelf.

The house felt a little less like a place full of traps.

There were still questions.

There were still missing pages.

But there was also evidence that Eleanor had been trying to do something she believed was necessary.

I decided that, whatever else we discovered, I would not let uncertainty become an excuse to judge her before the facts were clear.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: Jennifer Remembered the Day Her Mother Hid the Tin, and the Memory Led Us Back to the House

The archive request took another week.
