Jennifer was upstairs, sorting through the last of the papers we had taken from the study.

The woman on the phone asked me to confirm the reference number from the photocopy.

I read it aloud.

“Yes,” she said. “We've located a file that may correspond to that number. The original record is incomplete, but there are related documents.”

I dried my hands on a towel.

“What kind of documents?”

“A property transfer and two supplemental filings. You'll need to come in to review them. We can't interpret the contents over the phone.”

I thanked her and wrote down the appointment time.

When Jennifer came downstairs, she found me standing beside the kitchen table with the telephone still in my hand.

“They found it,” I said.

She stopped.

“The property record?”

“Yes. There's more than one document.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she pulled out a chair.

“When can we go?”

“Tomorrow morning.”

I called Mr. Bennett and told him what the clerk had said. He advised me to bring the original reference number, the photocopy, and identification.

He also reminded me not to assume that a matching name meant a matching person.

“I understand,” I told him.

But I could hear the caution in his voice, and I was grateful for it.

The following morning, Jennifer drove us to the county building.

The sky was gray, and a cold wind pushed leaves along the pavement. I carried the folder on my lap, keeping one hand over it whenever we turned.

The records office was on the second floor.

We checked in at the front desk and waited while a clerk brought out a thick file tied with cotton tape.

It looked ordinary.

Brown paper.

Faded labels.

A number written in blue ink.

Yet I felt my stomach tighten when the clerk placed it in front of us.

“Some of these pages are copies,” she explained. “The originals were damaged during an earlier storage transfer.”

I thanked her and opened the file.

The first document was a property transfer from a small holding company to a private trust. The address was familiar, though I had never connected it to Eleanor.

It was a house on the edge of town, in an area that had since been redeveloped.

The transfer had taken place more than thirty years earlier.

The names appeared in a column.

Martin Hale was listed as the representative for the holding company.

Eleanor's name appeared on the supplemental page.

She was not listed as the owner.

She was identified as a witness to a signed declaration.

I read the line twice.

Jennifer leaned closer.

“Why would Mom witness something like this?”

“I don't know.”

The clerk pointed to a second document.

It was a statement confirming that certain records had been received by the trust's administrator. The description was vague, referring to supporting papers and an inventory.

Eleanor had signed that one, too.

Her signature looked just as it did on the cards she used to leave me beside the kettle.

Seeing it there made the room feel suddenly unfamiliar.

I had expected to find some proof that she had been involved in a secret financial arrangement.

Instead, I was looking at evidence that she had been present when other people made decisions.

That could mean many things.

I kept reading.

A third page listed several payments made over a period of months. The amounts matched two of the figures in Eleanor's handwritten list.

They did not match every number, but the dates were close.

I wrote them down carefully.

Jennifer looked at the page with a furrowed brow.

“Those are the same dates we found in the notebook.”

“Two of them,” I said. “We shouldn't assume the others are connected.”

She nodded.

The clerk explained that the trust's original records had been moved to an archive after the holding company dissolved. She could provide copies of the documents in the file, but any further search would require a separate request.

I completed the form.

Before leaving, I asked whether the file contained any reference to children.

The clerk checked the index.

“There is a supplemental filing that mentions a minor beneficiary,” she said. “The name is not visible in our copy.”

“Is there an original?”

“Possibly. It may be in the archive, but I can't promise that it survived.”

I thanked her and closed the folder.

We sat in the car for several minutes before starting home.

Jennifer held her copy of the transfer document on her knees.

“Mom signed these papers,” she said.

“Yes.”

“But that doesn't tell us why.”

“No.”

“Could she have been helping someone?”

“That is one possibility.”

She looked through the windshield.

“I keep thinking about the warning she left. If Martin wanted the records, maybe he was trying to get them back.”

“Perhaps.”

“Why would he want them?”

“I don't know.”

The answers were frustratingly small.

But they were honest.

Back at home, I laid the copies across the desk and called Mr. Bennett again. He asked me to read the relevant passages aloud.

When I finished, he was quiet for a moment.

“This gives us something concrete,” he said. “It shows your wife witnessed a declaration and later signed a receipt for supporting records. It does not show that she owned the property or received the money.”

“Could she have been responsible for keeping the documents?”

“Possibly. We need the original declaration, if it still exists.”

I looked at the photocopy of the trust filing.

“There's a reference to a minor beneficiary.”

“That is worth pursuing. But don't contact anyone based on a partial name or a damaged record.”

“I won't.”

He suggested that I request the full archive file and ask whether the trust had a successor administrator.

I wrote down the instructions.

After the call, Jennifer came into the study with a glass of water.

“You look tired.”

“I am.”

“You don't have to keep going every minute.”

“I know.”

She placed the glass beside me.

Then she looked at the copies.

“Do you think Mom wanted us to find these?”

I turned toward the window.

“I think she wanted someone to find the truth eventually. I don't know whether she expected it to be us.”

Jennifer sat in the chair opposite mine.

“When she was alive, I sometimes thought she was worried about something. She'd check the front door twice, or stop talking when the phone rang.”

I looked at her.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I didn't understand it at the time. I thought it was just stress.”

That was reasonable.

I remembered Eleanor checking the door, too. I had teased her about it once, saying the lock wasn't going to walk away.

She had smiled, but she had not laughed.

Now the memory seemed less ordinary.

I returned to the documents and placed the copy of the supplemental filing beside the note from the pendant.

The words about the children no longer felt like an isolated warning.

There was at least one minor beneficiary connected to the trust.

Whether that child had anything to do with Martin, the photograph, or the missing notebook pages remained unknown.

I wrote the name of the trust at the top of a fresh page.

Under it, I listed the questions we could pursue through official records.

I did not write down guesses.

I did not write down suspicions about Eleanor's motives.

Those would have to wait until we knew more.

That evening, Jennifer and I ate dinner at the kitchen table.

The green notebook was locked away, the necklace was back in its box, and the copies from the records office were arranged in a neat stack.

For the first time, we had evidence that did not depend on memory.

It was incomplete.

But it was real.

And I could finally begin to separate what Eleanor had done from what I feared she might have done.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: The Letter in the Archive Explained Why Eleanor Had Kept Her Silence for So Long

The records office called three days later.
