She once asked whether the pendant could be opened."

Jennifer stared at me.

For a second, she seemed genuinely surprised.

Then she looked down at the laundry.

"Maybe she was curious."

"Perhaps."

I waited for her to say something else.

She did not.

I continued.

"Did your mother ever tell you anything unusual about that necklace?"

"No."

"Did she ever give it to you?"

Jennifer shook her head.

"Not that I remember."

I nodded slowly.

Her answers sounded ordinary.

That should have reassured me.

Instead, I felt that we were both standing on opposite sides of a door neither of us wanted to open.

I asked her one final question.

"Have you seen the necklace since I last had it?"

She stopped folding.

Then she looked directly at me.

"No, Dad."

I believed she was lying.

I cannot explain how I knew.

Perhaps it was the pause before she answered.

Perhaps it was the way her fingers tightened around the shirt in her hands.

Perhaps it was simply the knowledge that she was my daughter and I had spent my life watching her face.

Whatever the reason, I could no longer pretend I had no suspicions.

I stood.

"I hope you're telling me the truth."

Her expression hardened.

"Are you accusing me of something?"

"I'm asking you to be honest."

"You think I stole your wife's necklace?"

I did not answer.

She threw the shirt onto the pile.

"I cannot believe this."

Her voice rose, and I felt the old instinct to apologize.

I wanted to calm her down.

I wanted to tell her I had not meant it that way.

But I had spent too many years making difficult conversations disappear by accepting the blame.

This time, I stayed where I was.

"I don't want to accuse you," I said. "I want the necklace back."

Jennifer stood.

"Then keep looking."

She walked toward the stairs.

I watched her go.

I felt no satisfaction.

If anything, I felt worse than before.

Suspecting your own child is not a victory.

It is a kind of grief.

I returned to the kitchen and washed the cups left beside the sink.

Then I sat at the table and looked at the empty chair across from me.

Eleanor would have known what to say.

She always knew when I was trying to avoid an uncomfortable truth.

She would have told me to stop making excuses for people simply because I loved them.

I missed her so much that I had to put my hands flat on the table until the feeling passed.

Later that night, I heard Jennifer speaking on the phone in her bedroom.

Her voice was low.

I could not make out the words.

I had no intention of listening.

I walked toward my own room, but then I heard her say something about money.

I stopped.

She spoke again, too quietly for me to understand.

Then I heard a short laugh.

I continued walking.

I did not know who she was talking to.

I did not know whether the conversation had anything to do with the necklace.

I refused to invent an answer just because I was frightened.

But the mention of money reminded me of something Jennifer had said the previous week.

She had complained that the cost of their visit was higher than expected.

She had asked whether I could help with some expenses.

I had given her cash.

I had not asked for a receipt or an explanation.

She was my daughter.

I trusted her.

Or I had trusted her.

The next morning, I found Michael in the kitchen making coffee.

He looked tired.

I asked whether he had seen Jennifer's car keys.

He pointed toward the counter.

Then he asked whether I had found the necklace.

"No."

He stirred his coffee.

"That's unfortunate."

I watched him.

"Michael, can I ask you something?"

He looked up.

"Sure."

"Have you ever noticed Jennifer wearing her mother's necklace?"

He blinked.

"No."

"Have you seen it in the house?"

He hesitated.

"I don't think so."

I waited.

He placed the spoon beside his cup.

"Why are you asking me?"

"Because it's missing."

"I know that."

He sounded irritated.

I let the silence continue.

Finally, he said, "Maybe you should ask Jennifer."

"I did."

"And?"

"She says she hasn't seen it."

Michael looked toward the hallway.

Then he took his coffee and left the kitchen.

I stood beside the counter, feeling more certain that something was wrong and less certain about what to do.

I could have called the police.

I could have searched everyone's bags.

I could have demanded that they leave my house.

But I had no proof of theft.

I had only an empty box, a few strange clues, and a family that seemed increasingly uncomfortable whenever I asked about the necklace.

I did not want to turn suspicion into cruelty.

That afternoon, I went through my old financial papers.

I was looking for the original purchase receipt, but I found something else.

A bank statement from several months earlier showed a withdrawal I did not remember making.

The amount was small enough that I might have overlooked it.

I checked the date.

It was during the week Jennifer had first asked to borrow money.

I could not tell whether the withdrawal had anything to do with her.

I put the statement down.

Then I remembered the envelope in the desk drawer.

I took out the photograph and looked at the handwritten date.

The young man beside Eleanor was still a mystery.

So was the note.

So was the necklace.

I was beginning to understand how little I could prove.

I needed facts, not guesses.

That evening, I asked Jennifer whether she would sit down with me after dinner.

She said she was tired.

I told her we could speak the following day.

She nodded without looking at me.

I went upstairs and closed my bedroom door.

The empty box sat on the dresser.

I picked it up and examined the hinges.

They were old but intact.

The lid closed properly.

There was nothing hidden beneath the lining.

I ran my finger along the inside edge.

Then I stopped.

A tiny dark mark sat near one corner.

It looked like a scratch.

I brought the box closer to the lamp.

The mark was shallow, almost invisible.

It might have been there for years.

I had never noticed it before.

I set the box down.

I did not know whether the mark meant anything.

But I was done pretending that my questions were unreasonable.

Tomorrow, I would ask Jennifer one more time.

And this time, I would not let her change the subject.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Truth Finally Came Out in My Kitchen, Spoken
