2 – My Daughter Told Me to Stop Searching, but the Way She Avoided My Eyes Made Me Question Everything I Thought I Knew

I barely touched breakfast.

Jennifer placed a plate in front of me and returned to the stove.

I watched her move around the kitchen, opening cupboards and closing drawers with the confidence of someone who knew exactly where everything belonged.

She had always been like that.

Even as a child, she could find things in my house faster than I could.

Eleanor used to joke that our daughter had inherited her mother's memory and my stubbornness.

I wondered what Eleanor would have said about us now.

Michael asked me to pass the butter.

Amber complained that the toast was cold.

Jennifer reminded everyone that they needed to leave early because she had promised to take Amber shopping.

Ordinary conversation continued around me.

I sat with my hands resting beside my plate, thinking about a silver pendant that might be sitting in somebody else's pocket.

Finally, I asked Jennifer whether she had moved anything from my bedroom.

She stopped spreading jam on her toast.

"No."

"Not even while cleaning?"

"I haven't cleaned your room."

"Did Amber go in there?"

Jennifer looked toward her daughter.

Amber immediately shook her head.

"I didn't touch anything."

I believed her answer less than I wanted to.

Not because I knew she was lying, but because she had answered before I finished speaking.

Still, I said nothing.

I did not want to become the kind of grandfather who treated every family member as a suspect.

I had spent years trying to keep peace in that house.

After Eleanor died, I had become even more careful.

I let arguments pass.

I forgave thoughtless remarks.

When Jennifer suggested that I was too old to maintain the house alone, I pretended not to hear the insult hidden inside the concern.

When Michael borrowed my car and returned it nearly empty, I filled the tank without mentioning it.

When Amber left wet towels on the furniture, I picked them up.

I told myself these were small things.

Family members made allowances for one another.

That was what I believed.

But allowances can become expectations.

And expectations can become demands.

After breakfast, Jennifer collected the plates.

I stood and carried mine to the sink.

She reached for it before I could set it down.

"I've got it, Dad."

"I can wash my own plate."

"I know."

She took it anyway.

I watched her place it beside the others.

Then I asked one more question.

"If you happen to see the necklace, will you tell me?"

She did not turn around.

"Of course."

I went outside.

The air was cool, and the garden looked tired beneath the gray morning sky.

Eleanor had loved that garden.

She used to spend hours tending the roses beside the fence, trimming dead leaves and talking to the plants as though they were old friends.

After she died, I kept the garden alive because I could not bear to let it disappear.

Some years, I did well.

Other years, I forgot to water the pots.

The roses survived anyway.

I stood beside the flower bed and remembered Eleanor wearing the necklace while she worked.

She would tuck the chain beneath her collar so it would not catch on the branches.

Once, I had asked why she wore the same pendant so often when she owned other jewelry.

She had smiled and said it reminded her of something she never wanted to lose.

I had assumed she meant me.

At the time, I had laughed.

I wished I had asked what she meant.

I returned inside and went upstairs.

The bedroom looked smaller than I remembered.

I sat at the desk and opened the bottom drawer.

There were old documents inside, including the paperwork from Eleanor's funeral and a folder containing our marriage certificate.

I had kept these things together because I did not know where else to put them.

I moved the folder aside.

Behind it sat a small envelope.

I did not remember seeing it before.

It was plain and yellowed at the edges, with no writing on the front.

I turned it over.

The flap was sealed.

For several seconds, I simply held it.

Then I heard Jennifer calling from downstairs.

"Dad, are you coming out with us?"

I put the envelope back in the drawer.

"Not today."

She appeared in the doorway a moment later.

"We're going to be gone for a few hours."

"All right."

She looked at the dresser.

Then she looked at me.

"Are you still worrying about that necklace?"

I did not answer immediately.

"I would like to find it."

Her expression hardened.

"It's just a necklace."

I stared at her.

She seemed to realize what she had said, but she did not apologize.

I spoke quietly.

"It belonged to your mother."

"I know who it belonged to."

"Then you understand why it matters."

Jennifer crossed her arms.

"Dad, Mom has been gone for three years. You can't keep living around things that remind you of her."

I felt the words land before I could prepare myself.

Perhaps there was some truth in them.

Perhaps I had held on too tightly.

But there was a difference between remembering someone and refusing to live.

I had done my best to continue.

I paid the bills.

I cooked my meals.

I attended church when I felt up to it.

I called friends I had not spoken to in months.

I had even agreed to let my family stay with me because Jennifer said she needed a little help getting through a difficult period.

I had not asked for anything in return.

I had only asked them to treat my home with respect.

"I am not asking you to grieve the way I do," I said.

"I'm asking you to understand."

She looked away.

"I have things to do."

She left before I could respond.

I remained at the desk for several minutes.

Then I opened the drawer again and took out the envelope.

The paper felt brittle between my fingers.

I carefully opened the flap.

Inside was a photograph.

Eleanor stood beside a young man I did not recognize, both of them smiling at the camera.

She looked to be in her early twenties.

The photograph had been taken long before I met her.

On the back, Eleanor had written a date and three words.

Keep this safe.

I turned the photograph over again.

I had never seen it before.

That surprised me.

During our marriage, Eleanor had shown me hundreds of photographs from her childhood.

She had told me stories about her school friends, her parents, and the summer she worked at a seaside hotel.

But she had never mentioned this young man.

I placed the photograph on the desk.

Then I examined the envelope.

It was empty.

Whatever explanation Eleanor had intended to leave with it was gone, or perhaps there had never been one.

I sat there, thinking about the necklace.

For the first time that morning, I wondered whether the pendant had contained a memory that belonged to Eleanor alone.

I had assumed I knew everything important about my wife.

We had shared a bed for forty-two years.

We had raised a daughter.

We had survived illness, money troubles, family arguments, and the slow changes that come with age.

I had believed there were no meaningful secrets left between us.

The photograph made me less certain.

I placed it inside the envelope and returned both to the drawer.

Then I went downstairs.

The house was quiet.

Jennifer, Michael, and Amber had left.

I stood in the kitchen and listened to the refrigerator hum.

For a moment, I considered calling Jennifer and asking her to come back.

Instead, I made myself a cup of tea.

I sat at the table where we had eaten breakfast and looked at the empty chair across from me.

Eleanor had sat there for decades.

She had always taken her tea without sugar.

I had forgotten that morning and put two spoonfuls into my own cup.

I drank it anyway.

Then I made a decision.

I would search the house once more, carefully and without accusing anyone.

If the necklace did not turn up, I would ask for help.

Not because I wanted to punish my family.

Because I was tired of pretending that something important had not happened.

I went upstairs and began again.

This time, I searched the places Eleanor had used before she died.

Her old sewing basket.

The cabinet where she kept her scarves.

The wooden chest at the foot of the bed.

I found buttons, thread, a packet of unopened tissues, and a folded shopping list in her handwriting.

No necklace.

I closed the chest.

Then I noticed a faint mark on the dresser where the wooden box had been sitting.

The box had not moved far.

It had been placed back almost exactly where I usually kept it.

Someone had known where to find it.

Someone had opened it.

And someone had returned it empty.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Empty Box Was Still on My Dresser When I Found a Clue That Made Me Question How Much of Eleanor’s Life I Had Really Known

I barely touched breakfast.
