If we leave them listed, people may waste time trying to reach services that can't accept them. If we remove them permanently, we may forget to check again when their capacity improves.”

“So we need a way to show the difference.”

“Yes. Available, temporarily unavailable, and awaiting confirmation.”

I wrote the three phrases in my notebook.

It was a small distinction.

It also meant someone would have to maintain the information rather than simply publish it and assume it remained true.

“Who will do that?”

“Daniel can help with the data, but someone needs to own the partner relationships.”

“Does that belong with you?”

“Not all of it. I can oversee the process, but I can't make every call.”

I looked at the staffing plan.

The coordinator position had been approved for six months.

We were already discovering that the work required more time than the original budget had allowed.

“Bring me the hours and the costs,” I said. “We'll decide what can be sustained.”

Elaine gathered her papers.

“There's one other thing.”

I waited.

“We need to stop treating every unanswered follow-up as a failed case.”

“Why?”

“Because people have reasons not to answer. Their phones stop working. They change numbers. They get overwhelmed. Sometimes they decide they don't want us contacting them anymore.”

“And sometimes they find help elsewhere.”

“Exactly. We need to record what we know without inventing what we don't.”

After she left, I remained at my desk.

I thought about how often I had expected a clear answer from a complicated situation.

I had wanted to know what Mara bought, why she bought it, and what happened after she left the hospital.

At first, I had told myself that the questions came from concern.

Some of that concern had been real.

But beneath it was another desire.

I wanted the story to continue until I understood my place in it.

I wanted to know whether my decision had mattered.

I wanted evidence that the money had done something meaningful.

The uncomfortable truth was that those wishes had little to do with Mara's needs.

They had to do with my need to understand myself.

I closed the notebook.

Then I went to the next meeting.

That afternoon, our legal team reviewed the program's privacy procedures.

We discussed how long contact information should be retained, who could access case notes, and which details were necessary for reporting.

A lawyer asked whether we should keep more information in case someone wanted to follow up months later.

“Would keeping it help the person?” I asked.

“Potentially.”

“Would they know we were keeping it?”

“We can explain that in the intake notice.”

“Can they decline?”

“Yes, though that might limit our ability to follow up.”

I considered the answer.

“Then the choice needs to be clear. We shouldn't make people surrender information they don't want to share just to receive the assistance that's available.”

The lawyer made a note.

We spent another hour revising the notice.

It was not exciting work.

No one would applaud the new wording.

But a person trying to get through an application should not have to wonder whether accepting a bus pass meant agreeing to become part of a company's public story.

Before I left, I asked for the final draft to be tested with people who had used the program.

Not because I wanted them to approve of us.

Because we needed to know whether the notice made sense to someone who was tired, worried, and trying to complete several tasks at once.

The following week, Denise sent back the first comments.

One person had found the language too formal.

Another had not understood the difference between optional follow-up and required contact.

A third had asked whether declining a survey could affect future assistance.

We changed the notice again.

I began to recognize a pattern.

Every time we thought we had made a process clear, someone showed us where our assumptions remained hidden.

That did not mean the work was pointless.

It meant we had to keep checking.

On Friday, I stayed late to finish the budget review.

The office cleaners moved through the hallway with their carts, and the lights in the neighboring buildings came on one by one.

I had been reading the same paragraph for several minutes when my phone rang.

It was my sister, Claire.

She rarely called without a reason.

“Are you still at work?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Of course you are.”

I leaned back.

“What is it?”

“Dad's birthday is next week. I thought we could visit his grave together.”

I looked at the photograph I had saved on my phone years earlier.

My father had been dead for six years.

I had visited his grave alone on the first anniversary, then less often after that.

“Saturday?” I asked.

“Saturday morning.”

“I'll come.”

There was a pause.

“Are you all right?”

“I'm tired.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

I rubbed my eyes.

“I don't know how to answer you.”

“That might be the first honest answer you've given me in a while.”

I almost objected.

Then I stopped.

Claire was not trying to win an argument.

She was giving me an opening, and I could choose whether to use it.

“I think I've been trying to fix things before I understand them,” I said.

“Things at work?”

“Things everywhere.”

She was quiet for a moment.

“Dad did that too.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

I looked toward the window.

“I think I'm beginning to.”

We agreed to meet on Saturday.

When the call ended, I put my phone away and returned to the budget.

I did not feel transformed.

I felt tired, uncertain, and a little less interested in pretending otherwise.

That was enough for one evening.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: A Door That Had to Stay Open

The next morning, Elaine sent me a revised report.
