You know what the bank recorded."

I looked at her.

She had remembered my first name.

I wasn't sure why that affected me.

Perhaps because, until then, I had been the person offering help.

Now she was the one deciding how much I was allowed to understand.

I folded my hands.

"All right. Tell me what you want me to know."

Mara took a breath.

"When you gave me the card, I thought you wanted to see what I would do."

"I wanted to help."

"I believe you."

She paused.

"But sometimes people help because they want to see what happens next."

I didn't argue.

She was right about that, too.

I had been waiting for a story.

A lesson.

Something I could carry back to my boardroom and use as evidence that I was not the man some people thought I was.

I hadn't admitted that to myself until she said it.

Mara glanced toward the street.

"Yesterday was difficult."

I waited.

"I had several things to take care of. The hospital was one of them."

I looked at the receipt.

"Is Lily receiving the care she needs?"

"She's being looked after."

It was the same answer she had given me before.

This time, I didn't ask her to make it more specific.

She seemed to notice.

Her shoulders relaxed slightly.

"I didn't use the card for anything unnecessary," she continued.

"You don't have to justify every purchase to me."

"That was part of your offer."

"I know."

"Then you should understand why I'm explaining it."

I nodded.

She folded the receipt again and put it away.

I wanted to tell her that I could do more.

I could arrange accommodation.

I could pay for groceries for a month.

I could find someone to help with whatever difficulties she was facing.

The offers lined up in my mind, each one polished and ready.

I let them go.

"What happens now?" I asked.

Mara looked at the card on the table.

"Now I return it."

"And after that?"

"I keep going."

The answer was so ordinary that it hurt.

She had not expected the day to change her life.

She had used the opportunity to deal with immediate needs, and now she had to face whatever came next.

I had thought twenty-four hours was generous.

For someone whose problems stretched beyond a single day, it was barely a beginning.

I picked up the card.

"You can keep the money you didn't spend," I said.

She frowned.

"I didn't ask for cash."

"I know. I meant that I could transfer something to you, if you wanted."

Mara looked down at her hands.

For a moment, I thought she might accept.

Then she shook her head.

"I need to make my own decisions."

"I understand."

"Do you?"

The question was quiet.

I could have told her that I managed thousands of employees and made decisions every day.

I could have listed the people who depended on my judgment.

Instead, I thought about how quickly I had become anxious when she spent money in a way I hadn't anticipated.

"No," I admitted. "Not as well as I thought."

Mara gave a tired nod.

It wasn't forgiveness.

It wasn't approval.

It was simply an acknowledgment that I had finally said something honest.

She stood and lifted the backpack.

I rose too.

"If you change your mind about help, you can contact me," I said.

She looked at me.

"I know."

Then she walked toward the doors.

I didn't follow her.

I stood beside the table, holding the bank card between two fingers.

Twenty-four hours earlier, I had handed it to her believing I was the person with something valuable to give.

Now I watched her disappear into the crowd outside, and I understood that the money had never been the difficult part.

The difficult part was accepting that help did not give me ownership of another person's story.

I returned to my office.

My calendar was full.

My inbox was overflowing.

The world I understood was waiting for me to resume control.

I sat down and opened the drawer where I had kept my phone.

There were no new alerts.

For once, I didn't feel disappointed.

I placed the card in my wallet and closed it.

Then I opened my schedule and canceled the next meeting.

Not because I expected Mara to call.

Not because I wanted to prove anything to her.

I simply needed a little time to think about the kind of man I had been before I met her.

And whether I was willing to become someone different.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The First Time I Tried to Help Without Taking Control, I Discovered How Much I Had Never Bothered to Notice

The next morning, I arrived at my office earlier than usual.
