The questions. Everything.”

I considered her words.

Making too much of it.

I had spent years trying not to make too much of things.

If Alicia sounded irritated, I told myself she was tired.

If Mark missed a call, I told myself he was busy.

If I felt overlooked, I reminded myself that young families had many responsibilities.

I had been generous with explanations.

Perhaps too generous.

But this wasn't a missed call.

It wasn't a forgotten birthday.

It wasn't a small disagreement about plans.

It was my home.

And my signature.

I looked at Alicia.

“I don't think asking about my property is making too much of anything.”

She looked down.

Mark nodded slightly.

Alicia noticed.

I saw the way her expression changed.

She seemed surprised that he was agreeing with me.

Perhaps she wasn't used to it.

Neither was I.

I didn't want to turn my son against his wife.

That was never my intention.

I knew they were married.

I knew their family mattered to them.

I knew the twins needed parents who worked together.

But working together shouldn't mean hurting somebody else.

And it shouldn't mean pretending a plan was kindness when the real purpose had been decided beforehand.

I turned toward Mark.

“Do you remember when you and Alicia bought your home?”

He looked surprised.

“Of course.”

“The twins were on the way.”

He nodded.

“Yeah.”

“You were worried about the money.”

He looked down.

“We were.”

I remembered that period clearly.

Alicia had been pregnant.

Mark had been trying to find something more permanent than the place they rented.

He wanted room for the children.

He wanted stability.

I understood that.

Raymond and I had wanted the same thing when Mark was little.

A home.

A safe place.

Somewhere to raise a family.

At the time, I had money available.

Not an unlimited amount.

Not enough that giving it away meant nothing.

Forty thousand dollars was a great deal of money to me.

But I wanted to help.

I told Mark I could give them the money.

I remembered how quickly his expression changed.

Relief.

Gratitude.

Disbelief.

Alicia had hugged me.

Mark had thanked me more than once.

I had felt useful.

After Raymond died, feeling useful mattered more than I admitted.

The house was quiet.

My days were different.

I couldn't help my husband anymore.

But I could still help my son.

So I did.

I looked at Mark.

“I gave you forty thousand dollars.”

His face tightened.

“I know, Mom.”

“I didn't ask you to pay it back.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“I didn't expect anything in return.”

He looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the son who had thanked me that day.

Then Alicia spoke.

“We've always appreciated that.”

I turned toward her.

“I hope so.”

She seemed hurt by the answer.

I hadn't meant to be cruel.

But appreciation was no longer something I could assume simply because she said it.

I thought about her words from the car.

Four years.

She had claimed they had been paying for my house.

The same period since Raymond died.

The same years in which I had managed the property myself.

The same years after I had given them money to help buy their own home.

I wanted to understand how those facts had become so tangled in their thinking.

I looked back at Mark.

“Have you ever paid the mortgage on this house?”

He frowned.

“No.”

“Have you paid the property taxes?”

He looked down.

“No.”

“The insurance?”

He shook his head.

I nodded.

“Then I don't understand why the house would be treated as something you've been paying for.”

Alicia became very still.

Mark looked at her.

I watched the exchange.

Neither answered immediately.

I knew I had touched something they had discussed privately.

I had heard Alicia make the claim.

I had heard Mark allow it to stand.

Now I wanted them to explain it.

Alicia drew a breath.

“Dorothy, nobody's saying we own your house.”

I looked at her.

“Good.”

She seemed encouraged.

I continued.

“Because you don't.”

Mark closed his eyes briefly.

Alicia pressed her lips together.

I didn't feel pleased.

I felt sad that such a basic fact needed to be spoken aloud.

Raymond and I had paid for this home.

We had finished the mortgage in 1998.

We had celebrated that achievement.

And when Raymond died, the house remained mine.

That was the truth.

It didn't change because Mark was my son.

It didn't change because Alicia wanted a different arrangement.

It didn't change because Bruce believed the property had a certain value.

It didn't change because somebody had found a place called Silver Meadows.

I looked toward the living room.

I remembered Raymond standing there on the day the mortgage was finally settled.

He had been proud.

Not because the house was worth money.

Because we had kept a promise to ourselves.

We had worked.

Saved.

Paid what we owed.

And secured our home.

I could almost hear his voice.

He would have wanted the facts written down.

He would have wanted the records checked.

He would have insisted that nobody sign important papers simply to avoid an uncomfortable conversation.

I was grateful I had remembered that.

I looked at the folder.

Then at my glasses.

Both remained within reach.

That mattered more than I could explain.

I had been one careless signature away from something I didn't fully understand.

Perhaps the documents would not have done everything Alicia hoped.

Perhaps they were only part of a larger process.

I didn't know.

That was why I had asked someone knowledgeable to examine them.

I wasn't going to pretend to be an expert.

And I wasn't going to accept Alicia's explanation simply because she spoke confidently.

Mark leaned forward.

“Mom, we weren't trying to make you feel like the house wasn't yours.”

I looked at him.

“Then don't treat it that way.”

He lowered his head.

Alicia sighed.

“We're going in circles.”

I turned toward her.

“Maybe because we haven't answered the important questions.”

She looked at the clock.

I noticed.

Again.

The morning was slipping away from her.

I imagined she had expected the conversation to be over by now.

A signature.

An agreement.

A promise that everything would be arranged.

Instead, she had spent the morning answering questions she hadn't prepared for.

I wasn't sorry.

I had spent nineteen minutes listening to people discuss my future without my permission.

They could spend some time listening to me.

I looked at Mark.

“I want you to understand something.”

He raised his eyes.

“When I gave you that money, I gave it because I loved you.”

His face changed.

I continued.

“I wanted you and Alicia to have a home for your children.”

He nodded slowly.

“I know.”

“I didn't give it so you would someday expect mine.”

He looked away.

I felt the words settle between us.

They were painful.

But they were true.

Alicia shifted in her chair.

“Dorothy, that's not fair.”

I looked at her.

“Which part?”

She opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

I waited.

She didn't answer.

I looked down at the folder again.

There was still more to discuss.

I wanted to know exactly what the papers meant.

I wanted to understand what Alicia expected me to sign.

And I wanted Mark to hear the truth about the house from someone who had known its history long before Alicia began making plans.

I glanced toward the fourth place.

The cup was still waiting.

I had not forgotten the man Raymond trusted.

I had asked him to come because I wanted facts.

Not threats.

Not accusations.

Not a performance.

Facts.

I placed my hand on the folder.

Then I looked at my son.

“We're not making any decisions about this house today.”

Mark nodded.

“All right.”

I turned toward Alicia.

“Or about where I'm going to live.”

She looked down.

I waited until she raised her eyes.

“Do you understand?”

She gave a small nod.

“Yes, Dorothy.”

I didn't know whether she meant it.

I didn't know whether Mark would keep his word.

But I knew one thing.

For the first time that morning, the decision about my future had been spoken by the person who actually owned it.

Me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: After I Refused to Sign Anything, My Son
